WHAT IS DYE SUBLIMATION PRINTING?

‘Sublimation’ is defined as turning a solid into a gas and backinto a solid without any liquid stage. This allows theapplication of sublimation inks into a materials surface using aHeat Press to provide the required combination of heat, timeand pressure. This combination causes the inks to be convertedfrom a solid to a gaseous state enabling them to penetrate thesurface so that a permanent, full colour image is formed. Thecolour penetrates the material giving a result which is longlasting, colourful and resistant to scratching. Dye Sublimationshould not be confused with other dry laser processes thattransfer the images to the surface of materials making themeasy to scratch off. True Dye Sublimation uses wet inktechnology.

WHAT ARE DYE SUBLIMATION INKS?

Dye Sublimation Inks are in essence a formulation of specialcoloured dyes suspended in liquids that can be passed througha digital ink jet printer.

WHAT MATERIALS CAN BE SUBLIMATION PRINTED?

Suitable materials are man made polymers such as Polyesterand PVC. These can be ‘hard’ such as a polyester coated sheetof aluminium or ceramic tiles or ‘soft’ such as polycottontextiles. During the heat press stage the pores of thesepolymers open to allow sublimation ink (now in a gaseousstate) to enter. As the temperature drops the pores closeleaving the now solid ink image as part of the polymer.

Printable materials fall into two distinctive categories

SUBLIMATION SHEET MATERIALS

These are varied but include polymer coated aluminium, PVC sheets, plastic sheets, fibreglass, polycarbonates,Foamex board, PVC and other plastics for vacuum forming, andtextiles containing more than 50% polyester.

MINI ENTERPRISE or PROMOTIONAL PRODUCTS

Many of these items are listed in thisbrochure. They include Sublimationclocks, jigsaws, bags, phone covers,door hangers, memo boards,wallets, water bottles, key rings,sunshades, ceramic tiles, ceramicmugs, business cards, coasters, place

mats, id cards, mouse mats, tee andpolo shirts and glass.

All Sublimation materials tend to be white to enable trueaccurate colour reproduction. If you added an image to acoloured base the image would be distorted by the basesheet colour.

WHAT MATERIALS CANNOT BESUBLIMATION PRINTED?

As Dye Sublimation is always performed on a polyester,polymer or polymer coated item, materials such as 100%cotton are not suitable as the natural fibres have no pores toopen to accept the image. Cotton can be sublimated but theimage will fade with a few washes making a 50% polyester50% cotton weave a required minimum.

HOW DO YOU PRINT AN ITEM?

This is a digital printing system so you firstly select or createyour colour image on a computer. Any picture from anysoftware package will do - as long as it will print on a pieceof paper it will be fine! Free ICC profiles or a PowerDriver issupplied to automatically match colours and perform taskssuch as automatic mirroring. The image is normally sized sothat it is slightly larger than the selected material so it can‘bleed’ over the edge leaving no white showing. The image isprinted on sublimation paper ‘mirror image’ and is then laidonto the sublimation material and secured with a little ‘heattape’. The two are then placed in a Heat Press for typically

1-2 minutes at a temperature between160°- 200°C. The exact time and

temperature depends on thematerial being used. At the end ofthe cycle the paper is removed toreveal a bright vibrant scratchresistant coloured image.

PRINTERS

Ricoh is now the chosen printerfor sublimation. The special high capacity inks mean no ‘bulkfeed ink system’ is needed. The new Ricoh printers offered byMega have very high print speeds, a self cleaning print headand high ink dispersion rates to prevent ink blockages. Theyuse print head technology with virtually no heat beinggenerated which means the ink does not sublimate in theprinter. ‘Bubble Jet’ printers from manufactures such as HP,Cannon and Lexmark heat the ink in the head to force dropletsonto the paper. This means all these types of printers areunsuitable for use with sublimation inks that react to heat.

DYE SUBLIMATION INKS

Patents exist for European and US desk top printing ofSublimation inks. These patented inks are available in slightlydifferent forms and brands within Europe but are alloffered at approximately the same market price.

SUBLIMATION PAPER

If you used low cost photocopy paper too muchof the ink would absorb into the paperitself and not enough would be‘Sublimated’ into the material.Sublimation paper has a coating onthe surface which effectively meansthe ink sits on the paper without everthoroughly drying. Three types ofpaper are available, Economy Paper,Ricoh Sublimation Paper and SpecialPaper. The Special paper will work with all sublimation

materials providing the best colour release and isessential with plastics as the thicker coating prevents

sticking to warm sublimated plastic. The Economygrade is cheaper but still can be used on a wide

range of materials and the Ricohpaper is excellent on all

materials except softplastics.

HEAT PRESS, MUG PRESS AND OVEN

The constant even pressure and variable temperature controlmake a Sublimation Heat Press essential. Obviously mugs willnot fit in a flat bed press so a special Mug Press can bepurchased or alternatively the printed image can be adheredto the mug which is then placed in a domesticoven for 10 minutes.

COMBINING TECHNOLOGIES

Sublimation Printing can be used inconjunction with othermanufacturing processes. Forexample; clear or white PVC sheetcan be sublimated and thenallowed to cool in the flat. Theprinted plastic can then be vacuumformed. A video resource is availablefrom Mega which shows a vacuumforming tool being made on a lasercutter and the clear PVC beingsublimated before it is vacuum formed toproduce a colourful three dimensional lightswitch cover for a child’s room. Another example ofsublimation printing and thermo-forming is with foam board.This can be printed and when it is still warm from the pressformed into shapes using a simple press forming tool.

These include Graphic Products;Engineering; Product Design;Food Technology; Art andDesign; Textiles

and Enterprise.

In industry the system is beingused by those making signs

and front panels andcompanies involved in the printwareand promotional business.

COSTS

Starter Kits containing a digital heat press, Ricoh printer,papers, inks, and heat tapes are available. Printing costs aredifficult to equate as it depends on how often the system isused and therefore how many cleaning cycles and head cleansthe printer performs. Best estimates however for a flood coatA4 image are around 50p for both ink and paper.

HOW RELIABLE ARE THE PRINT SYSTEMS?

The new Ricoh printers used in conjunction with SubliJetsublimation inks are efficient and reliable. Tests have shownthat even if the system is to be left dormant for severalmonths a nozzle check and head clean is all that is needed fortrouble free use.
