Background

The client’s Mainframe Infrastructure was migrated from one vendor to another in May 2009. The new environment data files were not catalogued using System Managed Storage. HCL Implemented System Managed Storage (SMS) Successfully for the client.

Challenges/ Objectives

• Batch cycle became unstable in the new Environment due to configuration issues resulting in delay of the batch cycle frequently

• The move resulted in multiple batch failures and major problems such as-

• Application Outage

• NDM (Network Data Mover) transmission delay

• File Transmission delay to DTS (Distributed System)

• One of the root causes of the problem was Insufficient Storage

The Solution

• The team performed detailed analysis and feasibility study and identified the approach for migration of the mainframe regions to a fully SMS managed environment

• Three re-usable REXX tools were developed to convert the Jobs in mainframe environments to manage the storage via SMS

• SMSNVSAM

– This tool converts Non-VSAM file parameters in Jobs, Procedures and PARM to match SMS changes

• SMSVSAM

– This tool converts the VSAM file parameters in Jobs, Procedures and PARM to match SMS changes

• TYPESCAN

– This tool executes the syntax check on jobs and displays syntax errors in the jobs after SMS conversion

– The SMS implementation included conversion of significantly high number of elements from Dev, UAT, and prod. The below is the count of elements converted

Results/ Benefits

• Minimal or No batch abends related to space constraints after SMS Implementation resulting in effort saving and increased business value

• With SMS, users can let the system select the specific unit and volume for the allocation

• Automated DASD Space Management enabling optimized space usage:

• The system will automatically remove obsolete data by migrating the data to other DASD, tape, or optical volumes

• The system will automatically delete the data

• Allocated but unused space can be released and assigned to new and active data sets

• Simplified movement of data to different device types. This helps to easily replace old devices with new ones

• Reusable tools that can be redeployed

• Cost Savings:

– Direct effort savings: 1762 man hours

– Indirect effort savings: 192 man hours
