PRODiGY

Page 2: Prodigy - Mélange 2012 final

Think of ordinary people doing some extra-

ordinary wonders...and eureka!!!!! To add to

the list (in the quest of decoding every arena

of matter), you get the likes of Einstein,

Newton, and many “prodigious” minds that

made the world go crazy after their

unparalleled contributions....

Well, well well.....don’t get misled by the

catch-up name “Prodigy”.... Needless to say,

it’s for all those ordinary maniacs who enjoy

ending up with sensible solutions for

simplistic (but interesting) tasks....We bring

for you an array of events which will test your

basic skills and judiciousness in applications of

your domain.....

Workmanship

Workmanship is the art, science & skill required to produce an engineering marvel. A

workman implements his skills and knowledge to do a given task in stipulated time.

Think of a “lathe” – the bread and butter of any workman. This little gizmo shapes

the conceived concepts into most of the industrial products.

So, for all the engineers, who want to challenge their limits, here is an opportunity

to showcase your talent of handling this machine to the core.

Problem statement: Manufacture the given component by using Lathe machine, within specified limits of time, tolerance & fitment with provided tools. Description of task will be provided at the time of competition. Date: 23rd and 24th February 2012, 10:30am - 05:30pm General Rules:

1. Participant must have to perform a task (job) from given drawing within the prescribed time.

2. Marking to the job will be based on the features made by the participant, also on the dimensions, accuracy of the job, surface finish and time taken to complete the task.

3. All the required equipments, tools, material will be issued to the participant just before the start of the competition.

4. The participant will not be allowed to participate without safety shoes. 5. Participant must report 30 min. before the allotted time of their respective

slot; otherwise it will be his/her responsibility for losing assigned time given to the job.

6. Competitor must do the job only in one chance, re-participation will not be entertained.

7. Participant must bring valid college identity card and receipt at time of competition. “Mélange” organizers and VIT management will not be responsible for any kind of injury happening to participant during the competition.

8. The organizers reserve all rights to change any or all of the above rules as they deem fit.

NOTE: JUDGE’S DECISION WILL BE FINAL & BINDING ON ALL.

Entry fee: Rs. 50 / participant

Model making

Model Making is an event as creative & imaginative as any other event in PRODiGY.

You will be given the required material. Employ your paper & thermocol handling

skills to create your own models.

It’s the only place that requires keenness of mind and your constructive skills

together!

Come on & take the challenge...

Date: 24th and 25th Feb. , 11:00am to 05:30 pm

Problem Statement:

Construct a model from the given material & equipment in a stipulated time.

What should be done?

A model has to constructed based on the design of the model provided in a specified period of time.

Time will be allotted taking into consideration the skills of an average student . No extra material will be given to anyone, so students should make the use of

the given material wisely. Also, no extra time will be given. The impromptu models may be some kind of MECHANICAL instruments,

assemblies. E.g. elliptical trammel, geneva mechanism, piston cylinder assembly model, dies, helicopters etc.

General Rules: 1. Students can register individually or as a group. In a group, maximum 4

members are allowed. The members can be from same or different college. 2. All the required equipments, tools, material will be issued to the participant

just before the start of the competition. 3. Participant must report 30 min. before the allotted time of their respective

slot; otherwise it will be his/her responsibility for losing the assigned time. 4. Participant will get only one chance, re-participation will not be entertained. 5. Participant must bring valid college identity card and receipt at time of

competition. 6. The organizers reserve all rights to change any or all of the above rules as they

deem fit. NOTE: JUDGE’S DECISION WILL BE FINAL & BINDING ON ALL....

Propulsion

Every one of us has fantasies of space missions and travelling to the far distant points

of light and other planets, so as to explore every nook and cranny of the universe.

And the vehicle that has made such an exciting travel possible is --- ROCKET....

But just imagine if you could build your own rocket with the help of simple elements like water & ai

r! Mélange gives you such an opportunity to build your own rocket with readily available materials. No need to have a complex knowledge of Aeronautics. All you need is water and air to power it, and a bottle for the body. Fuel your creativity with imagination and ignite it with your passion to reach the top of the sky!

So come and be a part of this simplistic but amazing rocket science event....

Problem Statement: Design a single stage water rocket using a plastic container of maximum 1-1.25 litre capacity that uses a combination of pressurized air and water for propulsion to complete a defined task. A launcher should also be constructed that can launch the water rocket safely. The launcher should have a 45° angle of trajectory.

Basic Skill required: To decide the amount of water, the compressing pressure and

the design of rocket.

Targeted students (domain): Anyone can participate

No of rounds and short details (Knock out/ Top x etc.):

1) Elimination round: Distance achieved should be within specified range.

2) Semi-final round: Distance achieved should be within in the specified range less than the previous one.

3) Final round: The Bottle Rocket should fall in the specified patch perpendicular to line of flight given at a distance.

Date: 22nd February

Entry fee (Proposed): 50 (individually or for a team of maximum 2 students )

No. of Participants: 50

Design Specifications:

Page 11: Prodigy - Mélange 2012 final

1. Only water should be used as a propellant. No gas other than air is allowed to be pressurized and provide thrust to the rocket.

2. The maximum pressure should not exceed 100psi. 3. Only pressurized air and water assembly should be used for launching. No

other potential, kinetic, or any other form of energy will be permitted for the launch.

4. The launcher must remain intact and stationary on the table while and after the launching of the rocket.

5. No component or a body part of the rocket should get detached from the main frame during the flight of the rocket. If detached then the rocket will be disqualified.

6. The neck of the container must remain intact and unaltered. 7. The flange and the mouth of the bottle can be used to hold the rocket while

pressurising. 8. No metal parts should be attached to the rocket. 9. The participants are free to get their own air compressing device. We will

provide a foot pump having a nozzle of standard size. 10. All methods of compression should be manual. 11. The upper tip of the rocket should be visible and marked red. 12. The launching mechanism should be such that the participant is enabled to

launch the rocket safely from the launcher.

Disqualification: Any of the clause listed below, if dealt with, may lead to disqualification of a team

1. If any rocket is found to be dangerous to launch by the organizers and judges. 2. If the rocket doesn't have a triggering mechanism to safely launch the rocket

from a distance of 2m from the launcher. 3. If a rocket blasts before the launch. 4. If a rocket launches before indicated by the organizers. 5. If any part of rocket breaks off during the time of flight. 6. If any design rule not abided by the participant. 7. The organizers reserve all rights to change any of the above rules as they

deem fit. Change in rules, if any will be highlighted on the website. 8. In case of any discrepancy decision of the judges shall be treated as final and
