STARGAZINGWITH BINOCULARS Typical Star Chart

Adjust the binoculars by covering one objective lens, and then look through the binoculars with both eyes at a distant object while turning the center focus dial until the image is sharp and clear. Covering the other lens, and with both eyes open, focus on the same object and use the adjustable eye piece to make it sharp and clear. Future viewing at various distances will now require only an adjustment to the central focusing dial. Heavy binoculars require a tripod or they will start to shake when your arms become tired. For stargazing, choose a night when the moon is not visible or very bright. The darker your surroundings, the better your view of the night sky. Wear warm clothing, and select a safe location. Wait in the dark until your eyes are accustomed to the darkness (15 to 20 minutes). If you are using a star map to identify stars, planets, and constellations, make sure your flashlight has a red-glow setting or shield it with red cellophane. Locate a bright star with your naked eye, and then use the binoculars to get a clearer look. "Star hop" by starting with a point you can identify, like the north star. Locate it by eye, find it with the binoculars, and then, by using it as a reference point, move on to the next object. After a little experience, you will be able to find and identify stars with your binoculars that can't be seen with the naked eye. Astronomy is an ancient and beautiful science. Begin your exploration of the universe today!

Some of the most amazing scientific discoveries happen in the field, and with this portable microscope kit, budding biologists can collect insects and plant material to view indoors or out. A self-contained incubation chamber encourages live specimen growth, so young naturalists can see how plants change over time and how bugs behave when light conditions change. It comes with a journal of observation charts and ideas for experiments, like watching how yeast reacts to light and temperature changes. Kids can write down their predictions and see if what they hypothesize in the field is also true in the lab, just like real scientists.
