2013 was California’s driest year on record and 2014 is looking to be no better. A firm-wide call for ideas from the San Francisco Office asked for video submissions
addressing how we as landscape architects can design for this environmental crisis.

As the nations top producer of craft beer, California breweries produce more than 2.4 million barrels of beer every year, and this number only continues to grow. However for every barrel
of beer produced, anywhere from three to seven barrels of water are wasted in the process.
This provides a huge quantity of waste water that has great potential for reclamation and reuse. So what if we could
close the loop on the water cycle within the context of local beer production and generate social community spaces
(Brew Fields) cultivated around the intelligent re-use of local resources.

A 24-acre mixed-use and pedestrian-focused district designed to enhance urbanism and smart growth within
central Houston.
Worked through an iterative schematic design process and design development of three on-structure amenity decks
and streetscape within the overall development. Amenity spacesincludedfireplaces,grills,outdoorkitchenareas,pools,fountains,andflexibleseatingtomaximizeviewstoward downtown Houston while adding variety to user
experience.
Generated presentation renderings were created using autoCAD, sketchup and Lumion.

FOUR SEASONS - EL TAMARINDOJalisco, Mexico
A cliff side resort located 100 miles south of Pureta Vallarta. The incredibly steep terrain made for challenging site
circulation. Grading exercises incorporating switchback trail systems were used to take up elevation between the beach,
main lobby building and villas.
The planting concept aimed to keep the local plant vernacular. Bromeliads, cacti and agaves were harvested
from the site and preserved. Worked through conceptual design and provided take-offs and cost analysis. Completed illustrative plan renderings and enlargements of various pool
deck areas.

EVELYN’S PARKHouston (Bellaire), TX
“When the historic Teas Nursery closed in December 2009, The Jerry and Maury Rubenstein Foundation
seizedtheopportunitytosaveapieceofBellaireandHouston history by acquiring the 5 acre site with the
vision of maintaining a green space in the heart of the big city. The land was donated to the City of Bellaire
on the condition that it would be developed as a park”- Evelyn’s Park Conservancy
The park aims to improve the health safety and well-being of the people of Bellaire and the wider Houston
area by encouraging walking, biking and the continued use of public open spaces.
Participated in design development phases of the project. Drafted layout plan and illustrative sections. Completed technical sections and details to clearly
convey design intent and inform cost estimates.

Downtown Houston
HOUSTON DOWNTOWN FREEWAYSHouston, TX
Prepared planning and visioning materials to explore alternativeconfigurationsofthedowntownfreeways.The alternatives were based on the district’s need to
increase the connections into downtown. The preferred scheme proposed relocating I-45 to the
East side of Downtown along the current alignment of Highway 59.
This alternative removed the existing elevated I-45 infrastructure to the West and South of Downtown.
This infrastructure would be replaced with an at-grade parkway that would reconnect the adjacent districts
and creates additional greenspace along the corridor. This parkway would then feed directly into the grid of
the downtown streets.
TheproposalsuggestedredirectingtheI-45trafficalong I-10 to Highway 59. The goal would be to
depress the lanes of Hwy 59, elevate the Infrastructure of I-45, and increase connections from the East side of downtown. The depressed corridor would be capped, creating opportunity for additional
greenspace and development.

Parkway replaces once elevated freeway at the east end of Buffalo Bayou Park.Proposed parkway scheme stacked freeways stacked behind GRB convention center.
Freeways become stacked north of dowtown. Frontage roads insert below the structure where freeway previously sat, increasing pedestrian right of way adjacent to buildings.
Removal of old freeway structures makes room for a new parkway with widened sidewalks and medians for pedestiran use. The parkway more effectively stitches together downtown and midtown.

ALLEN PARKWAY REALIGNMENTHouston, TX
In its current condition, Allen Parkway serves as a highway alternativethatfeedstrafficdirectlyintotheheartof
downtown Houston. Vehicles travel at speeds upwards of 50 mph. The parkway also runs along the length of Buffalo
Bayou Park, one of Houston’s largest public parks and newest amenities. While Buffalo Bayou Park is already
heavily used, pedestrians are extremely limited by ways in which to access the area.
ThispublicinfrastructureprojectaimedtoslowtrafficalongAllenParkwaybyaddingadditionaltrafficsignals.These
signals not only would reduce acceleration capacity but also improve pedestrian connections to Buffalo Bayou across this busy thoroughfare. The plan proposed the shifting of trafficlanestocreateaslower,protectedwestboundlane
and angled parking along the northern park side where vehicles could stop and drop off passengers. The addition of parking in this context keeps more eyes on the park, thereby increasing public safety, and greatly increasing user access
to the space.

CROSS CREEK RANCHFulshear, TX
Once dilapidated pasture land, this 3200 acre development 30 miles west of central Houston is now home to one the
most ecologically conscious master planned communities within Texas. All water within the development is processed and treated on-site and recycled through amenity lakes and
detention ponds. Recycled water is used for community irrigation.
Amenity lakes throughout the development include native grass mixes and wetland planting along sculpted wetland
benches. Habitat structures including brush piles and standing snags attract wildlife and further
enhance the restored ecosystem.
Completed multiple softscape and trails packages from conceptual design through construction documentation.

Houston. Saw project through from conceptual phases to construction documentation. Following demolition
of old structures, contaminated soils were dug out and capped beneath berms along the property line.
Due to Houston’s strict regulations on storm water management and on-site detention, much of the site
was used as rain gardens. Throughout the design process I coordinated regularly with both the architects and civil engineers to ensure proper detention volumes
and site drainage requirements were met. I worked closely with our client in selection of hardscape
materials as well as plant palette character. A careful mix of water tolerant plants including a variety of irises,
palmettos, and grasses were selected for the large detention pond at the front of the building.

COMBINED VISION PLAN PLACES
RIVERFRONT FORT WAYNEFort Wayne, IN
A planning study encompassing 312 acres adjacent to downtown Fort
Wayne and the rivers that run through the heart of the town. The goal of the study was to identify opportunities for enhancement along the riverfront and create a strong river district that would
stitch together downtown and areas north of the river.
Created concept diagrams to depict under-utilizedareasandcurrentlanduses. Diagrams served as a jump off point to generate ideas about how to
best reclaim and enhance these areas.
Diagrammatic sections showing current bank conditions were used to
juxtapose the potential for future uses along the river.

Regeneration and Curation: Waller Creek80
WATERLOO PARKThrough mostly infill development this section of Waller Creek will transition into a lively mixed-use residential neighborhood that takes on characteristics and uses (including residential, commercial, and cultural including food and entertainment) that directly respond to the unique physical proximity to The University of Texas, the State of Texas, Brackenridge University Medical Center, and the Red River Music district. As the State of Texas begins consolidating into a more dense footprint, we anticipate the garages on Trinity and small office buildings along 11th and 12th street transitioning to residential/mixed use. A similar vision is proposed for the parcels between the hospital and the Sheraton hotel. This vibrant new community, anchored by a newly transformed Waterloo Park and its rich multicultural history, will become one of the most diverse and eclectic Austin neighborhoods.

RED RIVER MUSIC DISTRICTThe Red River Music District has evolved as a unique setting for live music known the world over. As such, this delicate ecosystem cannot be relocated or reestablished elsewhere without losing its unique role in Austin and the music industry so we have proposed designation as a cultural preservation area. We anticipate renovations and additions to many of the venues (some of them are historically significant), including acoustic treatments and remedies to manage sound transmission outside the district. Infill opportunities will include new music venues, restaurants and cafes, and other pedestrian oriented uses. The most significant development opportunity in this neighborhood are the P3 sites (refer to the Development Opportunities Map at the end of this section) which offer the potential for larger, complimentary commercial uses like gear shops, record stores, and recording facilities, and even boutique hotels to create a one-of-a-kind food and music themed neighborhood. The proposed Red River Park is also made possible by the development of these sites. Anchored by Symphony Square and Stubb’s, we propose designating the Red River Music District as a cultural preservation area.

This series of diagrams and corresponding sections (following page) were generated as
part of the Waller Creek competition to support the proposed urban design guidelines for the
Waller Creek corridor. The diagrams depict the relationship of public open spaces to the built environment. The open spaces between the
creek and buildings represent urban edges that are activated by the adjacent infrastructure.
Conversely, the infrastructure is activated by the urban edge.

PALM PARK + THE PALM COLLABORATIVEHome to the Austin Convention Center and several built and planned hotels, this new neighborhood will derive its energy and sense of place from the redeveloped Palm Park and the new Palm Collaborative, home to Daugherty Arts Center, technology innovators, artists in residence, and the new satellite Austin Visitor’s Center amidst this collection of creative productivity. The development strategy for this neighborhood seeks to balance the scale of historic buildings, the pedestrian enclaves within the Park, and small-scale commercial development with the intensity and transitory pulse of the convention center, the Manchester Hotel, and other larger, visitor-oriented developments. Like Millennium Park in Chicago, Palm Park is a center of creative production and playful exchange, hosting several large events, festivals, performances and cultural experiences that give a lens into Austin’s identity.

SIXTH STREET + SABINE CORRIDORThe Sixth Street-Sabine neighborhood is the nexus of incredible historical resources (East Sixth Street is the largest designated historical district in the state of Texas) and some of Austin’s brightest entrepreneurial creative energy (6th Street East of IH-35 is a “farm league” for new food, clothing, design, and creative business concepts). Through strategic infill, tactical renovations, and temporary (even mobile) transitional space, this rejuvenated neighborhood will capitalize on this unique setting and cultural wealth by becoming one of the creative epicenters of contemporary cultural and culinary arts in the US.

WALLER LAKEFRONTThe Waller Lakefront is primarily open space and parkland with an intermingling of residential high-rise combined with cultural and recreational activities in the most naturalistic setting of the entire Waller Creek corridor. High-rise residential mixed-use along Caesar Chavez segues into three new sculptural residential towers, nestled into the natural creek habitat, offering residents an opportunity to live “in the park” while creating a dramatic addition to the Austin skyline. Nearer the lake-shore are a variety of bountiful park spaces and cultural assets that generate a wide diversity of activities. This strategy is based on the premise that a lakefront address in a park setting with ample creek setbacks will create higher value as compared with lower density and larger lot coverage, benefiting both the TIF and private development.

RAINEY STREET DISTRICTThe Rainey Street District is already undergoing one of the most dramatic transformations in the city as the development pressure continues to accumulate. This neighborhood has virtually no height restrictions and bears much of the burden of the TIF. The character of this neighborhood strikes a balance between new high-density residential development and a thriving pedestrian-scaled mixed-use neighborhood with small retail shops, restaurants, and cafes that preserve the organic character of Rainey Street.

RED RIVER MUSIC DISTRICTThe Red River Music District has evolved as a unique setting for live music known the world over. As such, this delicate ecosystem cannot be relocated or reestablished elsewhere without losing its unique role in Austin and the music industry so we have proposed designation as a cultural preservation area. was to be artfully designed, well crafted, and maintained in order to provide a

A pro-bono project in the hills just north of the golden gate bridge. The
improvement plan aims to create accessible parking and circulation into the main buildings as well as create a
central commons that is more usable for resident artists and pedestrians. Renderings were used to generate excitement and support from local

The Last Organic Outpost is a 2 acre urban farm located in the 5th Ward, one of the most
under served neighborhoods in the greater Houston area. Working with community
members we grow fresh organic vegetables and help raise awareness within the
community about the importance a fresh and healthy diet.

A temporary public art installation by Houston-based artist and designer Selven
Jarmon. This project features a series of four large-scale beaded tapestries (350,000
beads) mounted on the exterior walls of ALH’s main building.
360 Degrees Vanishing addresses the gradual disappearance of cultural traditions,
the beading culture within South Africa in particular, as well as the vanishing parts of
various cultures that are taken for granted but have been disappearing from our everyday
lives. 360 Degrees Vanishing re-imagines the possibilities of how a traditional medium,
such as beading, can be re-visioned and re-activated by placing it in a new context and
landscape.
