This i s no t t h e o c c a s i o n f o r a rev iew o f P r o f e s s o r F r i t s c h ~ s c o n t r i b u t i o n to t h e s t u d y o f
Phycology, which in t h e main c o n s i s t e d o f f a c t u a l a d d i t i o n s to our knowledge o f t he morphology
and development o f f r e s h w a t e r a lgae , But even had h i s s c i e n t i f i c work been l i m i t e d to t he two
volumes c o n c e r n i n g The S t r u c t u r e and Rep roduc t ion o f t h e Algae t h a t a lone would have p l a c e d a l l
p h y c o l o g i s t s g r e a t l y in h i s deb t and ea rned him the p o s i t i o n o f r e s p e c t and es teem, he h e l d a t
t h e end o f h i s l ong and a c t i v e l i f e . I t i s p r o b a b l y t h e l a s t t ime t h a t one w r i t e r w i l l a t t e m p t
t o cover such a l a r g e f i e l d w i t h i n t h e c e n f i n e s of one wor~, I t i s a l s o p r o b a b l y t r u e t h a t no
one among h i s c o n t e m p o r a r i e s cou ld have a c h i e v e d such a task , That P r o f e s s o r F r i t s c h succeeded
i s due among o t h e r r e a s o n s , to h i s c a p a c i t y f o r e n d l e s s work and above a l l to h i s e n c y c l o p a e d i c
knowledge. ~ i l e t h e s e two volumes r e c o r d in the main, t h e r e s u l t s o f i n v e s t i g a t i o n s t y p i c a l o f
the e a r l i e r p e r i o d s and t h a t d u r i n g which P r o f e s s o r F r i t s c h was h i m s e l f most a c t i v e , he was wel l
aware o f and i n t e r e s t e d in, t h e newer l i n e s o f a l g a l r e s e a r c h . In f a c t many younger p h y c o i o g i s t s
must have had o c c a s i o n to be g r a t e f u ] f o r the i n t e r e s t shown by him in t h e i r work In a d d i t i o n
t h e r e a r e many p h y c o ] o g i s t s in d i s t a n t p a r t s o f t h e world~ who a re proud and t h a n k f u l t h a t t hey
r e c e i v e d t h e i r t r a i n i n g under P r o f e s s o r F r i t s c h .
For 37 y e a r s (1911-48) o f h i s l i f e P r o f e s s o r F r i t s c h was head o f t h e Depar tment o f Botany in
Queen i~ary Co l l ege o f t he U n i v e r s i t y o f London and h i s s e r v i c e s as an a d m i n i s t r a t o r and chairman
o f commit tees were much in demand in h i s l a t e r y e a r s . The many o f f i c e s he heldo e n a b l e d him to
pu t t he need f o r t h e encouragement of p l~ycologica l i n v e s t i g a t i o n s b e f o r e a wider p u b l i c wi th
a u t h o r i t y . One o f h i s many b o t a n i c a l i n t e r e s t s o u t s i d e t h e U n i v e r s i t y of London was t h e F r e s h
wa te r B i o l o g i c a l A s s o c i a t i o n , t he need fo r which he p o i n t e d out in h i s P r e s i d e n t i a l Address to
S e c t i o n K o f t he B r i t i s h A s s o c i a t i o n in 1927. tle was Chairman o f t he Council o f t h e F.W~B,A, a t
t he t ime o f h i s dea th .
His a c h i e v e m e n t s were a l l t he more remarkable f o r one who n e v e r e n j o y e d r o b u s t h e a l t h , His
g e n i a l and f r i e n d l y manner pu t l e s s g i f t e d and, l e s s e x p e r i e n c e d f e l l o w workers a t t h e i r ea se
immed ia t e ly and i t gave him p l e a s u r e to meet and t a l k wi th p h y c o ] o g i s t s from a l l o v e r t h e world.
