Yoga means ‘union’ or ‘link’. Hatha Yoga is a system of physical exercise which studies and integrates the mind, body, and breath. The benefits of this ancient discipline include enhanced physical, mental, and emotional health. The practices and exercises of yoga develop the ability to sustain smooth and deep breathing, while moving the body and maintaining a variety of challenging poses. During a yoga class, students will learn Hatha Yoga pos-tures that are designed to strengthen, align, and balance the body. Students are taught breathing quiets the mind, and soothes the nervous system. The class focuses on developing focus, concentration, and awareness and teaching students the fundamental connection between intention, action, and consequence. The focus of the Yoga program is the transference of yoga skills into personal awareness and into tools for dealing with life and making healthy, responsible choices. Unlike traditional yoga classes offered to adults, InMotion Arizona yoga classes are highly interactive and engaging. Students are continuously moving and challenging their body and mind. Questions? Contact InMotion Arizona at (480) 236-1249. For grades K - 6th. (6 weeks).

SWCMA MIGHTY DRAGONS KARATE

Southwest Center for the Martial Arts’ “Mighty Dragons” karate program is an age and ability appropriate, specially designed training program that teaches more than just karate.

Karate requires that participants develop a high level of focus and discipline. The Martial Arts are primarily fo-cused on following a series of traditional rules, forms, and techniques. As such, behavior and courtesy are consid-ered to be the foundation of this ancient art form. Karate helps children by directing their focus to a positive means of expression and better listening skills.

Karate provides an excellent environment for developing behavior and attitude. It gives your child the chance to explore his or her innate powers. Through karate, children increase in strength, flexibility, endurance, balance, and harmony. Yet this is only the start. A strong sense of self control, self discipline, self esteem, self respect, and self confidence are cultivated which empower children for success in school and other aspects of life. All of these elements help children cope with life’s challenges socially and help with personal success in school and at home. It is one of the best activities a child can participate in to build confidence, self esteem, and discipline.

We feel that one of our most important responsibilities is to empower the children that we teach with confidence, persistence, and the self discipline to succeed in school, sports, and in life.

Young Champions is proud to be a leader in offering beginner, intermediate and advanced cheer. The course is designed to be fun and exciting. Students have the opportunity to advance each semester and participate in pa-rades and performances. The cheer program promotes: leadership, responsibility, enthusiasm, improved academ-ic performance, respect for teachers and parents, good morals, confidence, poise, physical fitness, artistic expres-sion, and competitive spirit. For ages 4-15.

Children learn the basic fundamentals of karate with an emphasis on a “non-aggressive” approach to self-defense. Children learn how to recognize and avoid danger, “break free and run” from a possible abductor, as well as learn ways to improve school grades, obey parents, respect teachers, and be an overall good student and citizen. Clas-ses are tailored to each age group according to their mental and physical development. For ages 4-15.

Students are taught how to play this fast paced game. Each week coaches teach skills such as trapping, dribbling, passing, goalkeeping, shooting and defending. Emphasis is placed on learning and developing beginner, interme-diate and advanced skills. Coaches break down techniques and apply them in fun type drills in class. Young Champions Soccer promotes better coordination, endurance, leadership and teamwork both on and off the field. For ages 5-15.

Students will learn the “Golf’s 4 Keys Instruction Program” which teaches the proper set-up and technique to learn how to make full swing, pitching, and chipping strokes. Classes take place on the schools’ athletic fields using a proprietary 1/3 weight ball that flies and performs like a full weight ball. All equipment is provided. Grades K-5. (8 weeks).

Deer Valley Unified School District’s Family Resource Center, in partnership with First Things First, provides support to strengthen families living in the North Phoenix Region. DVFRC offers education, prevention, and awareness by coordinating existing programs and services to meet the needs of families with children ages birth through five. Salt, Leather, Tin, Plaster, and More: After School Art for Grades 3 - 6

All sessions will be small group settings where each artist will receive lots of one-on-one attention. Participants will create 2 and 3 dimensional projects and work with plaster, “Crayola Model Magic”, leather, tin, fabric, textile paints, watercolor, acrylics, and more. Projects will include wearable art, relief sculpture, hanging sculpture, paintings, soft sculpture, and puppets. Some projects will be seasonal like our head of Frankenstein sculpture and our crow, corn, and Japanese lantern mobile. Other projects will focus on myths and fantasy like our Cy-clops. Sign up with a friend and double your fun! Mirage’s former art teacher, Mrs. Stevens-Moore, will teach these hands-on sessions. All supplies and materials are included in the class fee. For boys and girls grades K - 2. (5 weeks).

We’ll continue our quest to work with unique materials and learn new techniques. We’ll do several watercolor and salt paintings, create a mixed media triptych of fantasy figures, explore tactile textures with a plaster relief sculpture, and examine the work of artist Yayoi Kusama to create a vibrant and fanciful painting. We’ll use grout, glass, tiles, and found objects in a mosaic and focus on pirates and ocean life as one of our themes. So many projects - so little time!! Mirage’s former art teacher, Mrs. Stevens-Moore, will be the instructor for the sessions. All supplies and materials are included in the class fee. For boys and girls grades 3 - 6. (5 weeks).

Movies By Kids STOP MOTION MADNESS

Movies By Kids LEGO ANIMATION w/ iPOD TOUCH

Movies By Kids CLAY ANIMATION w/ iPOD TOUCH

Do you have an idea for a Movie? Then join Movies By Kids In this “Hollywood” style studio class where students create, storyboard, and animate their own cut-out cartoons using the art of stop-motion-animation. In addition, they will learn story structure, camera angles, and other creative filmmaking techniques. Students will operate digital video equipment, supply voices for their characters, and by the end of class, they will have created their own animated short film. All movies will be professionally edited and available to view and download at www.moviesbykids.com. Grades 2 - 7. (8 weeks).

Movies By Kids is going to take children’s fascination with LEGOS to the next level by creating original LEGO-themed animated short films. The ideas will be theirs, the sets will be constructed from scratch based on the movie theme, and the children will operate the camera equipment to bring their LEGO movies to the big screen. This class is the ultimate chance to not just play with LEGOs, but make them come to life using the art of stop-motion animation! Grades 2 - 7. (8 weeks).

Students will storyboard their idea, then design, create, and animate their own clay character. The process starts with building an armature or “skeleton” for the character. Then all layers of clay are applied until the character is ready for the camera. After the filming is complete, students will become the voices for their characters and supply the voice-over to complete their short films. Grades 2 - 7. (8 weeks).

My Child + One - A scholarship program –

My Child + One is an opportunity for families to make a difference not only in their child’s life, but in another child’s. The scholarship will benefit children that without your financial assistance would otherwise not be able to participate in after-school enrichment classes such as chess, science, dance, and others offered through Com-munity Education. Research and Practice in Community Schools Report cites that Community Education students show significant and widely evident gains in academic achievement and in essential areas of nonacademic development. The program is simple – please note on the registration form (reverse side) in the designated area the dollar amount in which you choose to donate. Include your do-nation along with your enrichment class registration form and payment. Your dona-tion will be added to a general scholarship fund to be used to defer the cost of a pro-gram for a child in need. Scholarships will be awarded through recommendations by principals based on stu-dents’ needs at each of the Deer Valley USD campuses.
