Lori’s Hot Tips for Summer 2014We invite all families to participate in our exciting array of summer enrichment classes and camps. This year, our financial assistance process is now easier than ever. Your family may qualify to receive up to $150 per student to register for summer camps. See details in the box at the bottom of the page. World languages? Oui! Si! Meet Kay ZuccaroKay Zuccaro has been our Aquatics Supervisor for 16 years, with experience in aquatics over 25 years in Edina. She graduated from the College of St. Benedict with a degree in early childhood education, and loves kids. Kay is a Red Cross Certified water safety instructor, lifeguard instructor, and teaches water exercise classes. Her mission is to help children and adults feel comfortable in water, build self-esteem and educate on the importance of water safety. For fun, Kay likes to swim, ski, travel and cook.

Level 2: Fundamental Aquatic Skills Children will practice basic water safety, underwater swimming and swimming while using a combined stroke on front and back. Prerequisites: Passed level 1 or can float independently on their front and back, and swim on their front and back using arm and leg actions.

Level 3: Stroke Development Basic water skills, diving, front and back crawl will be emphasized with guided practice. Prerequisites: Passed level 2 or can jump into deep water and can swim on both front and back at least 20 yards.













Level 3B: Stroke Development Level 3 is one of the most difficult levels to pass, so we have added another class for those students who have been in Level 3 more for than 2 sessions. We will focus on endurance and refinement of strokes. Prerequisites: Must have taken level 3 for 2 or more sessions, must be totally comfortable in deep water, able to dive, able to do front and back crawl.




Level 4: Stroke Improvement Children will develop confidence and endurance through practice of front crawl, back crawl and elementary backstroke. Breaststroke and sidestroke will also be introduced and practiced. Emphasis is also placed on basic water safety. Prerequisites: Passed level 3 or can dive, swim front and back crawl 25 yards.

Aquatics

Level 5: Stroke Refinement Students will gain endurance by swimming for increased distances, coordinate and refine sidestroke, butterfly and breaststroke and build on water safety skills. Prerequisites: passed level 4 or can swim front crawl, back crawl, and elementary backstroke, the start of breaststroke, sidestroke and butterfly.





Level 6: Swimming & Skill Proficiency Refines the strokes so students swim them with ease, efficiency, power and smoothness over greater distances. Focus is on personal water safety, lifeguard readiness, diving and fitness swimming. Prerequisites: passed level 5 or can swim front crawl, back crawl, elementary backstroke, sidestroke, and butterfly.

Guardstart Ages 11-14 Designed to prepare students for the American Red Cross Lifeguarding course. Participants will improve stroke mechanics, endurance, and rescue techniques. Students will also develop skills in responsibility, communication, and decision making. Prerequisites: passed Level 4 Red Cross swimming level, ability to swim 25 yards continuously with rotary breathing and ability to tread water for one minute.



Lifeguard Training Ages 15+ Learn to prevent and respond to aquatic emergencies. Skills emphasized include victim recognition, surveillance, equipment based rescues, rescue skills, first aid and CPR. Successful students will receive an American Red Cross Lifeguard Training Certificate and a CPR For the Professional Rescuer Certificate. Prerequisites: students must be 15 years old on or before the last day of class, swim 100 yards front crawl, 100 yards breaststroke, submerge 7 feet and retrieve a 10 pound brick and swim 20 yards to the shallow end and get out of the pool. Access to a computer with internet is required for homework. Attendance is mandatory.

Water Sports Sampler Splash into the world of water with our Red Cross Water Safety Instructors. This organized “fun swim” will include time to explore competitive swimming, synchronized swimming, diving, water aerobics, lap swimming, water volleyball, fins, swim games, and free play. Prerequisite: must be a Level 3 swimmer who is comfortable in deep water.

Introduction to Competitive Swimming Learn the basic skills of competitive swimming. You’ll focus on the four competitive stokes: butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke, and freestyle. You’ll also work on endurance, kicking, and stroke-specific drills. At the end of the session, you will have the opportunity to be evaluated and be placed on the Edina Swim Club. Prerequisites: must be at least 8 years old, and able to swim 25 yards of freestyle, backstroke, and breaststroke.



Discover Scuba Ages 11+ Have you ever wondered what it’s like to breathe underwater? Experience the fun and ease of moving underwater while wearing scuba gear in the pool. You learn the basics of scuba diving while under the direct supervision of PADI Professional Instructor Mark Dugger of Midwest School of Diving. Prerequisites: must be 11 years old and be very comfortable in deep water.

Summer Orchestra Lessons: Beginning 5th Grade This class is open to all beginning string players going into fifth grade this fall. Taste of Spanish: Conversation & Vocabulary Practice Ages 6-11 “Taste of Spanish” is great summer practice for kids who took any of our levels classes this year because we will be exploring all new vocabulary in an immersion-style setting. Will DeBerg Summer Basketball Camp Grades 4-9 Five weeks of summer basketball camp for boys!! This is a great chance to work on your game. Connell Basketball Camp: Summer Workout For Boys Tom Connell, former Edina High School head basketball coach, along with current and former EHS varsity players has designed this experience to improve players’ skills, attitude and outlook on the game of basketball. Strength and FitnessSummer Strength TrainingSummer Strength Training is a program developed to help improve student/athlete fitness levels and athletic potential by providing structured and supervised total body strength work-outs in a group setting. Students are required to attend the first 2 sessions for an orientation that will include assistance in building a training program, how to keep accurate training records and how to use reps with proper form on the equipment. After that, students will be expected to train independently but adult trainers are always available for questions and adjustments.

In order to achieve optimal effects, students should commit to training at least twice per week with a partner whenever possible. Make ups are available with approval from a trainer. Otherwise, all students must attend the session they are registered in. Please note, this program is not intended to be one-on-one personal training. If you are interested in a more personalized program please contact Reed Boltmann for a referral.

Secret Agent Grades 2-6 Can you outwit the Mad Science Spy? James Bond’s gadgets weren’t all science fiction. Discover the science behind some real spy technology as you listen to distant voices and sounds. Learn about different secret codes, their use in clandestine communications and a little of the history behind them. Experiment passing your messages using a spy technique called a “dead drop.” Build an alarm system, a secret safe and attempt to defeat several security systems. Mad Science instructors transform laboratory science into fun, interactive learning experiences.

Cheerleading Ages 5-9 Skyhawks Cheerleading teaches the essential skills to lead crowds and support the home team. There is no stunting in this entry level program—just a big focus on fun while each cheerleader learns proper hand and body movements, cheers and jumping techniques. Sail Calhoun: Optimist Ages 7-11 Beginning Optimist is for the new or less experienced sailor, ages 7-10. Students can repeat the course, since we will attempt to group sailors by skill level and advance them accordingly. Intermediate Optimist is designed for students who have taken Beginning Optimist at least once and demonstrated a good comfort level on the water. Students are placed one per boat. Under close instructor-student contact, sailors learn to become independent skippers by handling the sail and steering the boat at the same time. The 8 ft. Optimist dinghy is the ideal learn to sail boat as well as one that provides a challenge at the racing level. It is a very stable boat and is easy to handle on the water. If you wish, you can register your child for both morning and afternoon classes. We will avoid repetition of curriculum where possible and we will provide supervision for full-day students during the lunch hour. We maintain a student to staff ratio of 6 to 1. Sail Calhoun: 420 Ages 11-16 The Club 420 sailboat is a 14 foot sporty boat. The beginning level is intended for the new sailors who will learn how to rig the boat, land at a dock or buoy and sail in varying conditions. Treasure Hunt Art Camp Ages 3-6 Ahoy mateys! Pirate Adventure Camp is back by popular demand. This summer, set sail for a new adventure as we journey to Pirate Island. Our mateys will go on a treasure hunt, make a huge alligator, create our own patch and hat, sculpt a doubloon necklace and more. 3D Puzzle Fun Grades K-5 Using hands-on puzzle activities, you will learn how many of our everyday items are designed by architects and designers. Observational Drawing Grades 2-6 Drawing from observation consists of seeing an object from different perspectives. In this class, we will draw items of the artist’s choice (some brought by students) with charcoal, ink and pencil sketch, while learning shadow, cross hatch and reflective light. Artists will also learn art vocabulary and art structures. Young artists will sketch a drawing of their favorite animal from a picture (possibly their pet). SNAG Golf Ages 5-10 This Sports Unlimited golf program was created to meet the growing needs of the new generation of young golfers. Sports Unlimited uses SNAG (Starting New At Golf) equipment, which includes golf clubs with oversized plastic heads and tennis-size Velcro golf balls to help kids develop the skills of hitting the ball. Basic Drawing Grades K-5 Why is it that your friend is “artistic” and you are not? It may be because your friend is using a different part of the brain than you are. Your friend can “see” things differently than you can because they are looking at the world in terms of shapes, lines, colors, and the relationships between them. With this week-long camp, you will learn to see and interpret things using an observational technique that allows you to translate the three-dimensional world around you into a two-dimensional drawing, just like a visual artist. Adding concrete experiments with wind, water and solar panels produces a high-powered and high-energy course. Sr. Robotics Engineer Grades 4-7 Explore the mechanical and electrical engineering that makes robots possible. In this class, students will build an OWI robotic arm edge to take home, build circuits, experiment with gears and explore sensors that robots use to see and hear to guide their actions. Students will learn the fundamentals of programming robots with Mad Science’s Sandwich programming. LEGO Mindstorms® RCX Robots are available for both building and programming.

Outdoor Survival Camp: Three Rivers Park District Hyland Park Reserve Grades 4-9 Do you have what it takes? Scale a vertical wall, canoe the waters of Hyland Lake, learn shelter building techniques, use GPS technology to find your way through our Hyland Park Reserve, study fishing essentials, and be trained in other survival skills. This camp is designed to teach outdoor skills, survival basics, and safety in wilderness situations. Sumo-Battlebots Tournament Grades 3-8 Battle in our new sumo ring! Sumo Battle-Bots are a modern twist on the ancient Japanese sport of Sumo Wrestling. Using the NXT Intelligent brick from LEGO, servo motors, advanced ultrasonic, touch and light sensors, and specialize LEGO technic engineering components, students will build sumo-bots that will compete against one another. Woodworking ‘14: All New Projects Grades 3-7 Make a bat house (bats are an ecologically friendly way to control the mosquito population), a puppet theater, a squirrel lounger and book holder. Make, paint and take home 4 different projects while learning the rudiments of craftsmanship, including: measuring, safely cutting and crosscutting, drilling, clamping, hammering and more. Earthquake & Structural Civil Engineering Grades 4-8 Explore the principles of structural engineering in this fun and exciting seismic class. Use an electronic earthquake simulator (shake table) to investigate and learn about the effects of earthquakes on steel and concrete buildings. Student will design and build towers and structures from Knexs, LEGOs and Wood, and see the amazing effects of vibrations and movement have on their structures, and then test their structures to destruction. Look What’s Growing This Summer!Edina Community Education KIDS Club, WISE Guys and SURGE participants are rolling up their sleeves, getting dirty (on purpose) and earning their green thumbs this summer by helping to care for the schoolyard gardens located throughout the district. School gardens provide a vital place for hands-on learning experiences and allow students to see science come alive right before their eyes. In addition, many of our school gardens produce fruits and vegatables that keep our students nourished and eating healthy.

Do you have a green thumb? You don’t have to be in KIDS Club, WISE Guys or SURGE to participate. Gardening is a great activity for all ages. Contact the Edina Volunteer Program at [email protected] or call (952) 848-4926 to learn how you can get involved. Families are also welcome.

Secret Agent Grades 2-6 Can you outwit the Mad Science Spy? James Bond’s gadgets weren’t all science fiction. Discover the science behind some real spy technology as you listen to distant voices and sounds. Learn about different secret codes, their use in clandestine communications and a little of the history behind them. Experiment passing your messages using a spy technique called a “dead drop”. Build an alarm system, a secret safe and attempt to defeat several security systems.

Advanced Robotics: Arduino Engineering Grades 4-8 For students who want to move past LEGO robotics, Robotics with Arduino is the camp for the serious roboticist. The Arduino is a programmable electronic prototyping platform that can be programmed from your computer. This class will introduce students to the Arduino Microcontroller – a powerful platform for developing hardware that interfaces with the physical world. SNAG GOLF Ages 5-10 SNAG (Starting New At Golf) golf program was created to meet the growing needs of the new generation of young golfers. The equipment includes golf clubs with oversized plastic heads and (tennis size) Velcro golf balls to help kids develop the skills of hitting the ball and learn the fundamentals of grip, stance, swing, ball contact, putting, chipping and driving. The possibilities are endless: Ironman, Thor, Hulk, Batman, Superman, Spiderman, Wonder Woman, etc. Action figures, LEGOs, props, and backdrops will be available for filming in class. Handle all of the technical details including using a digital movie camera, filming scenes, stop-motion animation and adding finishing special effects and transitions to the movie. In this exciting, hands-on learning class, our instructors will take your student through the entire digital film making steps from start to finish using Frames Software. Please bring a snack daily. Mini Horse Camp Ages 5-10 Have you ever seen a half pint mini horse? They are the size of a large dog but everything else about them is just like a regular horse. Come and learn about horse safety, anatomy, behavior, training, leading the horses through obstacles, jumping them, grooming, and everything related to horses! This is an amazing, hands-on experience for kids. Alison Polster is the owner and program manager of Half Pint Horse Foundation which is a non-profit promoting mental and physical healing, therapy and education through interaction with miniature horses. Camp will be held at Hyland Park Reserve, Recreation Area in Bloomington. No transportation provided.

Archery Camp: Three Rivers Park District Carver Park Grades 4-9 This camp is designed for both beginning and intermediate archers. Participants will use our compound bows and practice from ground level and elevated platforms, then put their new skills to the test on a walk-through course. Campers will also learn how to throw spears and study other ancient hunting skills. Program time is about 4 hours per day and the rest of the time is free play, enjoying park facilities and lunch. Campers are bused to Carver Park Reserve Archery Range in Victoria. Bus leaves promptly at 9:00 am and returns by 3:30. Meet outside door 3 at the Edina Community Center no later than 8:55 am! We leave each day from the Edina Community Center and travel to fun destinations like area bike trails and the Lakes while practicing bike safety. Classroom InstructionClassroom training is 30 hours and is followed by 6 hours of ‘Behind the Wheel’ training, offered at all times of the day.

Morning classroom sessions in July are taught by Barry Becklin, South View Middle School teacher. Lessons are taught in order, Monday–Friday for two weeks and make-ups are subject to instructor approval. Make-ups for this choice must be scheduled during July morning sessions only. Parent meetings are scheduled at 11:00 am the first Tuesday of each session.

Morning classroom session in June and all afternoon and evening sessions are taught by Safeway Driving School instructors. Each lesson is independent and can be taken in any order. If a lesson is missed, a student can make it up in one of six afternoon and evening sessions this summer. Morning make-ups are not available with this choice. See lesson schedule below. Behind-the-Wheel TrainingLessons consist of six hours of one-on-one private instruction with a responsible, professional driving instructor. Lessons are two-hour sessions and include pick-up and drop-off from home, work or school. Training is done on actual city streets and highways. • If You have to Change or Cancel a camp. Cancellations or changes are accepted up to five business days prior to class start. Less than five business days, you will be assessed a $10 fee and any course supply fees and then issued a credit slip for the balance. Cancellations/changes made by phone or email over the weekend or holidays are received by our office on the next business day and will not be eligible for refunds or credit on classes starting on the day the message was received.

• Children with Special Needs. Call 952.848.3952 if your child needs assistance in attending a class. Scheduling paraprofessionals during the summer is different than during the school year and while we will do our best to honor your request, we cannot guarantee assistance. Giving us a 2 week notice will help ensure that we have plenty of time to make sure your child will be supported during his/her class.
