Logos DescriptionThree logos designed in Adobe Illustrator, advertising a nursery I created and named after a friend (Teresa Lacona).

Program(s)/Tool(s)Adobe Illustrator

ObjectivesTo learn how to use the tools in Adobe Illustrator and become comfortable with vector graphics to design logos.

ProcessAfter doing a couple sketches and mental outlines, I came up with two logos for “TC Lacona Nursery” that involve more color and shapes, and one with less color and more space. The first involves a triadic color scheme, the second a complementary colorscheme and the third a monochromatic color scheme.

Along with the text, I designed an image to be used in all three logos – a simple tree – using the pen tool. I found a tree design I liked online and modeled a design that resembled it. I incorporated it in each design differently. In the second one, I took out the “Y” in “NURSERY” and substituted the tree for it, which I think worked out relatively well. All designs are meant to be simple with the last I made more simplified than the others.

Program(s)/Tool(s)Adobe InDesign, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop

ObjectivesTo learn how to use the tools in Adobe InDesign, coupled with Illustrator and Photoshop, to become familiar with creating and designing brochures.

ProcessAfter creating the logo in Illustrator, I created the color scheme for the brochure in InDesign and added a few watermarked images (using transparency), which are of the tree from the logo. I then began making the text more specific such as the text on the front (the what, where, when, etc).

I then inserted the images I was going to use in the brochure. My source was Morgue-file. I then made a more detailed layout and created the text for it (with the subheadings being “Our History”, “Our Facility”, “Our Employees”, “Our Plants” and “Our Community”). Afterward, I inserted a picture of my friend Teresa into Photoshop and cropped it. I then placed it into the brochure and wrapped some text around it. After fine-tuning the brochure, I printed it and folded it.

FlierDescriptionA black and white flier designed in Adobe InDesign.

Program(s)/Tool(s)Adobe InDesign

ObjectivesTo learn how to use Adobe InDesign to create a flier.

ProcessIn the design process for this flier, I first created a few sketches with pencil and paper. After selecting the one I liked best, I began to use Adobe InDesign to begin the layout for the flier. After inserting my favorite photograph from the choices available, I began making text boxes for the title, subtitles and body text.

After I finished the draft, I realized I needed more contrast, so I made the title and subtitles in the body text white with black background. This instantaneously added more contrast to the flier, making it more interesting to look at. I also alternated fonts (a serif and sans serif) frequently and made every text box align with another text box or the letters in the title (Graduate).

Program(s)/Tool(s)Text Wrangler, Adobe Illustrator

ObjectivesTo learn how to use Text Wrangler to create a web page using HTML and CSS.

ProcessI first created the logo in Adobe Illustrator. Designing the tree was the most tricky part of the logo. I found a similar tree designed on the Internet, placed it into Adobe Illustrator and traced parts of it. I then designed the rest. Afterward, I traced a simple leaf, colored it a different green and made copies of it. I then rotated the leaves to different angles to fit the mold of the tree.

Using Text Wrangler, both HTML and CSS proved a challenge for me. But with class, YouTube tutorials and lab assistant help, I managed to figure out how to make the program work. HTML proved easier; CSS was the most difficult but I managed to learn how to make CSS and HTML link and work as a web page.

The font Khmer MN that was used in the logo in Adobe Illustrator was not available in Text Wrangler, so I had to make an image, place it in CSS and then adjust it’s positioning and size.

I also made the text and headers, as well as the background, mimic the color scheme of the logo.

What is pictured is the final result.

Program(s)/Tool(s)Microsoft Word, Scanner

ObjectivesTo learn how to effectively in Microsoft Word.

ProcessI scanned the image from a floral book I own, the AIFD Guide to Floral Design. I liked the warm, autumn colors in this particular arrangement and decided to do a charitable ad featuring floral arrangements in the Fall (hence why I chose November). I scanned the image in the McKay library on one of the copy scanners, emailed it to myself, and then after readjusting the pixels and size, I uploaded it Word. I chose to place the photo on the right side and then added text boxes. I chose earthy colors to compliment the warm, autumn colors of the floral arrangement (split complimentary – sort of). These colors included shades of brown, green, orange and grey. I then added some more colored text boxes for design only (no text) to help with rhythm, repetition and gestalt. I then added the words in: the event name (Floral Serve), the company name (Richmond Floral), the logo (the Autumn tree), the slogan (Spread Happiness), the “where-when” (date, location) and finally the “what” at the bottom of the poster (the purpose of the ad).

After adding the words, I chose two contrasting fonts and began aligning everything. The date-time box and photo are aligned with the space after the “l” in “floral:, for example. I then readjusted the text boxes to make sure negative space had room to flow and did not become trapped. After finishing, I saved the program. What is pictured is the final result.

Frederic’s Piano TuningDescription

Designed stationery for a piano tuning company.

Course/InstructorJoel JudkinsVisual Media Comm 130, Sec 7

Program(s)/Tool(s)Adobe InDesign, Adobe Illustrator

ObjectivesTo learn how to create stationery in Adobe InDesign and use correct design principles.

ProcessI first thought of a subject I am passionate about which is why I came up with piano. I then decided to make a logo featuring a piano (in Illustrator). I use rectangles and sized them appropriately to create a piano board. I then chose a simple color (a blue) and added the business name (Frederic’s). If you’re a classical music “junkie” like me, you’ll know Frederic Chopin is one of classical’s best pianists!

I then took the image and imported it into InDesign where I developed a business card. I added the text and some music notes (toned down to 10% transparency). I decided to keep the business card clean and simple.

I then created the letterhead by placing the logo on the right and the text in the left. I added a few watermarked notes near the text and created a watermarked imaged of the keyboard from the logo by expanding it and and placing it on the right side of the page.

Program(s)/Tool(s)Adobe Photoshop, camera

ObjectivesTo learn how to create a poster featuring an image in Adobe Photoshop. In my case, I created an advertisement.

ProcessI first took this photo as it is interesting and impressive (which is of the Ruffatti organ in the Barrus Concert Hall). The orange tones of the room inspired me to use a complementary color scheme, so I added tones and shades of blues to the poster. I made the photo (which isn’t of the entire organ) bleed off the page. I added boxes of orange and blue throughout the poster, including a design to the left of boxes that mimics the direction of the largest pipes. I did this in attempt to add some interest, rhythm and pattern to the page. I also used a transparent grey to complement the pipes.

I then wrote the text out and picked fonts that contrast each other (as does the colors). After working with a lot of layers, editing the photo and playing with the colors and sizes of the boxes, I came up with the final result.

Program(s)/Tool(s)Adobe Photoshop, Morgue-file photos

ObjectivesTo learn how to create a montage in Adobe Photoshop.

ProcessFirst, I chose three photos: a donkey photo that follows the rule of thirds. I edited the photo a little, sharpening and contrasting it a little. Then I chose a photo featuring a couple chickens and a photo of a woman showing care for a kitten. I cropped and resized the images onto the donkey photo and then blurred the edges so they weren’t too sharp.

I subsequently chose an inspirational quote and placed it on a background of red-orange (the same color of the chickens). This has made a complemntary color scheme. I then chose the fonts and gave them a shadow for added contrast and visibility.
