All Production sites successfully participated in the shipment of good DOMs to the Pole (integration and FAT)

Anticipate total of 280 DOMs shipped by end of Nov, 2004. Current total is 248.

Good team established which lays the groundwork for further DOM production success

1st ProduktionEnd of February:

First 2 kits of electronic boardsarrived at Zeuthen

1.3.2004 :

First DOMproduced at DESY

Page 21: PROJECT : IceCube Digital Optical Module Production at DESY Zeuthen

November 24, 2004 Rolf Nahnhauer 21

6 kits of electronic boards (DOM rev4.2) arrived in Zeuthen beginning of May

Started test production of 6 complete modules immediately

tested technology and production chain trained technicians

All 6 DOM’s produced successfully in foreseen time

After 6 months DOM’s still in very good shape (gel)

Tests limited due to old revision of main boards (software compatibility)

2nd Produktion

Page 22: PROJECT : IceCube Digital Optical Module Production at DESY Zeuthen

November 24, 2004 Rolf Nahnhauer 22

3rd Produktion

Produce and test 60 DOM’s in July-August-September 2004

Needs special preparation : more jigs for gel pouring (+3) got +1 mid of August

60 DOM’s pre-potted 1.9.

DOM-mainboards are expected to arrive only at end of July 10 +15 arrived 23.8. 30.8.

35 DOM’s should go to South Pole (testing finished at 9/20) 25 DOM’s ready for testing at 16.9.

testing finished 5.10.shipping done 27.10.

Plan from March 2004 :

Page 23: PROJECT : IceCube Digital Optical Module Production at DESY Zeuthen

November 24, 2004 Rolf Nahnhauer 23

3rd Produktion

Got 9+7+6 mainboards: 23.10.,30.10.,7.11. all used for completion

of pre- potted modules

Got request to start second DFL test at the 4th of November

Have now still 6 complete DOM’s + 9 pre-potted DOM’s in store

Final 9 mainboards are promised to arrive in the next days

DFL TestingTesting system for 2004 will not be fully automatised

Light source 405 nm available and tested

Light source for lower wavelength under study(nitrogen laser? +splitter? + dyes?)

Ligth distribution system under development (DESY+Mainz)(2 test channels available)

DOM trigger (external trigger signal + optical monitor)planned to be build (DESY+Mainz)

DFL electrical cabling to be doneworked m

uch better than expected in March 2004

DFL Testing

Final Acceptance Test (FAT) :

US system completely copied in Sweden and Germany

Works mainly computer steered

Uses 3 light sources (laser, W-lamp+monochromator, LED)

Light distribution per glass fiber bundle

About 12 hours of data taking per cycle

Full test ~ 14 days, cycles at +20, -45, -20, +20, -45, +20 degrees

1+6 Test-DOM’s : all fine

25 DOM’s from FAT1: 1 reboot failure3 gel failures

21 DOM’s from FAT2: 1 flasher board failure13 gel failures !

Hard- and software design ok

Unsolved : gel problem, similar result in Sweden, different in US

Most probable reason: too early pre-potting before sealing specific for irregular production in 2004

Page 31: PROJECT : IceCube Digital Optical Module Production at DESY Zeuthen

Production 2004

Regular production was impossible due to deliveryproblems of mainboards from the US

Nevertheless 280 DOM’s for the deployment of four strings are produced, successfully tested and shipped

All but one production steps under control

Only unsolved problem: gel behaviour needs further studies

DOM testing went much better than expected

Improvement of testing equipment under study

Production 2005 - 2008

- Start up problems hopefully overcome

- Producers well trained

- Production capacity sufficient

- Logistic proven

- Customs problems “solved”

but depend all the time strongly on delivery of components from outside
