Project Name: Location: Hale Manini`owali Kailua-Kona, Big Island, Hawaii Flanking a preserved lava flow, Hale Manini`owali was designed to sit comfortably within the landscape and make the most of the ex- pansive views over the raw lava coastline and Pacific Ocean. Located within an exclusive resort community on the Big Island of Hawaii, this residence was commissioned by a retired couple who envisioned living in a charming beach home that embodied the plantation architecture of the early 1900s in Hawaii and the Caribbean. As avid golfers, they desired a home that would comfortably allow them to enjoy Kona’s amazing year-round weather incorporating passive design strategies to minimize the need for mechanical air conditioning. Responding to the lot’s irregularly shaped south boundary, adjacent to the lava buffer, and a six-foot elevation change from the main road, the home was thoughtfully conceived and arranged as a series of detached terraced pavilions: the Main Hale, the Garage Hale, and the Guest Hale. Light and airy, the residence’s major design elements comprise of Classic “Dickey” double-hipped roof lines, large lanais, and expansive openings. The Guest Hale, with two Guest suites, is located at the entry of the property enjoying views of Hualalai Mountain and on clear days, Mauna Kea Mountain. The Garage Hale is located centrally within the property. The Main Hale, which contains the free-flowing main living areas and master bedroom suite, showcases the property’s amazing views of Kua Bay, the Kohala Coast, and Maui’s Haleakala Mountain. This layout allowed for the pavilions to be closed off from one another tailoring to the amount of privacy the residents and guests desire. Carefully detailed, the residence boasts a rich palette of materials: white coral stone from the Philippines, painted wood tongue and groove siding, wide-plank oak wood flooring, Caspian seashell limestone, Turkish travertine, limestone cement plaster, western red ce- dar roof shingles, and carved limestone reliefs sourced from Bali, Indonesia. Our clients’ collection of colorful tropical-themed paintings is showcased against a nearly all-white interior. With Kona’s semi-arid climate, drought tolerant plantings were specifically chosen to soften the architecture and tie the pavilions together. A solar photovoltaic system offsets the demand of fossil fuel energy.
