ACKNOWLEDGEMENT:An independent project is a contradiction in terms. Every project involves contribution of many people. This project also bears the imprints of many people and it is a pleasure for me to acknowledge and thank all of them.I am deeply indebted to Mr. Sanjeev Balan who acted as a mentor and guide, providing knowledge and giving me their valuable time out of their busy schedule, at every step throughout the research. It is only because of him this project came into being. I also thank the TAFE and integrated institute of learning management for providing an opportunity of doing this project under his leadership.I also take the opportunity to express my sincere gratitude to each and every person, whodirectly or indirectly helped me throughout the project and without anyone of them the research, would not have been possible. The immense learning from this project would be indelible forever.
The objective of this project is to find out the method of STATISTICAL QUALITY CONTROL to measure the quality of the product used by the company.
INTRODUCTION OF STATISTICAL QUALITY CONTROLStatistica1 quality control (SQC) is the term used to describe the set of statistical tools used by quality professionals. Statistical quality control can be divided into three broad categories: 1. Descriptive statistics are used to describe quality characteristics and relationships.Included are statistics such as the mean, standard deviation, the range, and a measure of the distribution of data. 2. Statistical process control (SPC) involves inspecting a random sample of the output from a process and deciding whether the process is producing products with characteristics that fall within a predetermined range. SPC answers the question of whether the process is functioning properly or not. 3. Acceptance sampling is the process of randomly inspecting a sample of goods and deciding whether to accept the entire lot based on the results. Acceptance sampling determines whether a batch of goods should be accepted or rejected. The tools in each of these categories provide different types of information for use in analyzing quality. total quality management (TQM) addresses organizational quality from managerial and philosophical viewpoints. TQM focuses on customer-driven quality standards, managerial leadership, continuous improvement, quality built into product and process design, quality identified problems at the source, and quality made everyones responsibility. However, talking about solving quality problems is not enough. We need specific tools that can help us make the right quality decisions. These tools come from the area of statistics and are used to help identify quality problems in the production process as well as in the product itself.
ABOUT THE COMPANY
The early years at TAFE The Amalgamations Group entered the tractor business in 1960. Simpson & Company was already making Perkins Diesel Engines and our founder Chairman, Mr. Anantharamakrishnan's own great interest in agriculture and the Green Revolution in the making, made the group grab the opportunity to make tractors when it presented itself. Standard Motor Products of India Limited had been assembling Massey ferguson tractors in India for Massey Ferguson India, which was the Bangalore based company handling the entire MF business in India. Massey Ferguson was looking for a company that would, in a phased manner, manufacture its tractors in India and successful negotiations with the Amalgamations Group lead to the group taking over the Bangalore operations and moving it to Madras. The new company was called Tractors and Farm Equipment Limited. On December 15th 1960 our founder Chairman, announced at a press conference at Chennai, his plans to manufacture tractors and implements at Simpson's Industrial Estate in collaboration with Massey Ferguson of Toronto. At that time, the estimated demand for tractors in India was 12000 tractors a year and TAFE was allocated a capacity of 7000 tractors a year. Initially 50 % of the tractor was built with indigenous content but within two years this rose to 85 %. From these early beginnings, we are proud to have risen to a turnover of US $1 Billion and a sale of 100000 tractors last year apart from the distinction of being India's largest exporter of tractors in the last financial year.
