Mentoring
Questions to Ask A Mentor
• What is one question you wished you asked but never did?
• What is one thing you would have done differently (education, career, etc.)?
• What is one this you still struggle with?
• What factors do you consider most often when planning for the future?
• Why do you do what you do? Why did you select your current career/job?
Do's and Don'ts of Mentoring
• Establish appropriate boundaries and expectations at the beginning of the relationship.
- Mentors are not therapists.
- The relationship also should evolve as you evolve in your education and career.
• Take the initiative to schedule meetings to seek advice.
- Pace your communication attempts. Do not bombard your mentor, give them time to respond.
• Mentors should provide honest feedback without being overly critical, and act as a guide.
• Mentees should be able to express their thoughts and opinions with their mentor.
