DEFINITIONPronominal verbs are verbs that need a reflexive pronoun in addition to a subject pronoun, because the subject(s)

performing the action of the verb are the same as the object(s) being acted upon

French has two types of pronominal verbs:

• reflexive verbs

• reciprocal verbs

French Reflexive Verbs - Verbes à sens réfléchi

The most common pronominal verbs are reflexive verbs which indicate that the subject of the verb isperforming the action upon himself, herself, or itself. Reflexive verbs mainly have to do with parts of body, clothing, personal circumstance, or location.

Here are some common reflexive verbs:  

  se baigner     to bathe, swim se fatiguer     to get tired   se coucher     to go to bed   se lever     to get up

   s’habiller     to get dressed   se maquiller     to put on makeup

   se brosser (les cheveux, les dents)     to brush (one's hair, one's teeth)

se laver (les mains , le visage)     to wash (one's hands, one's face)  

Se promener – To take a walk  ils se promènent. Elle promène le chien.

They’re taking a walk. She's taking the dog for a

walk.

  Se laver – to take a bathIl se lave. Je lave le bébé.

He is taking a bath. I'm giving bath to the baby.

French Reciprocal Verbs - Verbes à sens réciproque

While reflexive verbs tell you that one or more subjects are acting upon themselves, reciprocal verbs indicate that there are two or more subjects acting on one another

Here are the most common French reciprocal verbs:

   s'adorer to adore (one another) se dire     to tell

s'aimer to love se téléphoner to call

se regarder to look at se parler     to talk to (one another)

se détester to hate se connaître to know se disputer to argue se rencontrer to meet

se comprendre to understand
