• Wilson determined to keep America out of the war in Europe.– “We must be impartial in thought as well as in

action”- President Woodrow Wilson• This was difficult and most Americans ended

up taking a side.– German & Irish Americans for Germany// Central Powers.– Most Americans for Britain// Allied Cause.

• British officials worked hard to gain American support.

• Main method used = Propaganda.

What is it?• A form of communication aimed towards

influencing the attitude of the audience toward some cause or position.

• Propaganda statements may be partly false and partly true.

• Propaganda is usually repeated and dispersed over a wide variety of media in order to create the chosen result in audience attitudes

• Both sides (Central & Allies) used propaganda.• German Propaganda = Anti-Russian– Did not appeal to Americans

• British propaganda = well controlled and skillfully created and delivered.

questions but everyone must write the answers in your notes!

• You will have 3-4 minutes at each image.• At the end of 3-4 minutes your group will

move to the next image numerically.
