    Thethi National Park

    1966 2 630 ha.

    8 nature monuments

    Flora; Fagus sylvatica, Abies alba, Acer sp., Vacciunium myrtillus, Juniperus

    sp., Taxus baccata, Sorbus aucuparia,

    Endemic species: Lilium albanicum, Viola dukagjinica, Wlefnia baldaccii.

    Fauna: Capreolus capreolus, Lynx lynx, Rupicapra rupicapra, Ursus arctos.

    Important touristic area for both domestic & foreign tourists.

    Thethi lies in the center of the Albanians Alps, between the block

    Bjeshket te Nmuna on the west, and the block of Jezerca on the east.

    Thethi is a touristic alpinist region and it is the most important one in the

    north of the country.

    The park lies in the valley created by the Theth River. The mountains havevery steep slopes and accidence with around 16-35 however, in some

    parts 45-60 or even 90. The form of the valley resembles that of a deep

    hole surrounded by mountains.

    Valbona Valley National Park

    1996 8 000 ha

    5 nature monuments

    Flora: Picea excelsa, Pinus leucodermis, Fagus sylvatica, Pinus peuce,

    Corullus sp, etc.

    Fauna: Lynx lynx, Ursus arctos, Canis lupus, Felix sylvestris, Lutra lutra,

    Mustela putorius, Sus scrofa, Rupicapra rupicapra, Tetrao urogallus, Aquilachrysaetos, Salmo sp.

    Important attractive area for tourism

    New Information Center

    Stunning nature, clean air, high and characteristic mountain peaks, lakes,

    numerous water resources, forests, mountains, flora and fauna of ValbonaValley National Park provide conditions for true eco-tourism experiences

    It contains all phytoclimatic zones.

    Flora: Fagus silvatica, Pinus leucodermis, Quercus sp. Carpinus orientalis,

    Ostryia carpinifolia, Arbutus sp., etc.

    Fauna: Sus Scrofa, Canis lupus, Meles meles, Martes foina, Felis silvestris,Lepus europeaus, Dendrocopos sp, Turdus merula, Columba palumbus etc.

    The park is highly frequented by day and considered the 'Natural Balcony

    of Tirana'.

    Important area because of water supply for Tirana

    Shebenik-Jabllanica National park

    2008 33 928 ha Old forests of Fagus sylvatica

    Flora: Fagus sylvatica, Acer sp, Quercus sp, Carpinus, Luzula, Rubus,

    Juniperus sp. Etc. Albanian rock rose (endemic species), Albanian pansy

    (subendemic species), Dukagjini pansy (subendemic species) and Rock

    grevillea (subendemic species). Fauna: Ursus arcots, Canis lupus, Vulpes vulpes, Martes foina, Capreolus

    capreolus, Rupicapra rupicapra, Lepus europaeus, Sus scrofa Golden Eagle,

    Western Capercaillie, etc.

    The area is home to at least 14 glacial lakes, the highest of which are

    around 1900 meters. Elevations in the park vary from 300m to over 2200m at the Peak of

    Shebenik Mountain, which, together with Jablanica gave name to the park

    Tomorri Mountain National Park

    1996 4 000 ha, 2012 24 723 ha

    10 Nature monuments

    Flora: Fagus sylvatica, Pinus leucodermis, Acer sp, Fraxinus sp, Juniperus

    sp, Sideritis sp.

    Fauna: Ursus arctos, Canis lupus, Vulpes vulpes, Martes foina, Meles

    meles Sus scrofa, Lepus europaeus, Capreolus capreolus, Rupicapra

    rupicapra, Aquila sp, Columba sp etc.

    Tomorr is of great importance to the local people where a Bektashi

    religious temple can be found, offering many facilities such as skiing.

    The Bektashi religion also calls this area home, and organizes a largereligious festival every August.

    Divjake-Karavasta National Park

    1966 1 250 ha, 2007 22 320 ha

    5 nature monuments

    The Karavasta Lagoon is the largest lagoon in Albania and one of the

    largest in the Mediterranen Sea.

    Lagoons ~ 5 000 ha.

    Flora: Pinus sp, Tamarix sp, Alnus glutinosa, Fraxinus sp, Ulmus sp,

    Querqus robur, orchis sp, origanum vulgare etc.

    Fauna: Anas sp, Vanellus vanellus, Larus sp, Glareola pratincola, Sterna

    albifrons, fishes.

    Pelicanus crispus 5% of the world population

    The lagoons provide living conditions and breeding sites for more than 5%of the worlds population of this bird. The islands in the lagoon are one of

    the most important features of the area for conservation of birds

    Prespa National Park 1999 27 750 ha

    Terrestrial and water habitats

    2 lakes (Prespa e madhe and prespa e vogel)

    56 plants Red book.

    Flora: 1,500 plants. Sideritis syriaca, Salvia officinalis, Ostrya

    carpinifolia, Nymphaea alba, Ulmus campestris, Juniperus exelsa,

    Celtis caucasica, Corylus colurna, Fagus sylvatica, Quercus sp,

    Fraxinus, Caprinus etc.

    Fauna: 186 birds, 8 endemic fishes, Fulica atra, Netta rufina,

    Podiceps sp, Anas sp, Ursus arctos, Sus scrofa, Capreolus, Canis

    lupus, Pelecanus onocrotalus, Dalmatian Pelican ( P. crispus).

    Information center - Biosphere reserve (undergoing)

    KfW is implementing a project (~3.5 Mio) for the sustainable use and

    protection of biodiversity in the Prespa National Park.

    Llogara National Park 1966 1 010 ha

    1 nature monument (Flags pine)

    Flora: Pinus nigra, Querqus sp, Pinus heldreichii, Abies borisii- regis, Ostryacarpinifolia, Acer sp, Ilex aquifolium, Buxus sempervirens, Quercus

    coccifera, Pinus leucodermis etc.

    Fauna: 105 birds; Accipitriformes sp, Canis lupus, Capreolus capreolus, Sus

    scrofa etc.

    Important attractive area

    A paragliding site serving annually as an international competition venue

    is located south of Llogara.

    Karaburun-Sazan National Park (marine)

    2010 12 428 ha

    First marine PA in Albania

    The marine park features ruins of sunken Greek, Roman and World War II

    ships.

    Rich underwater fauna, steep cliffs and giant caves, ancient inscriptions of

    sailors on shore, secluded beaches, and breathtaking views of the coastline.

    Caretta caretta, Monachus monachus etc.

    Sazan Island contains 7 species of amphibians of which 3 are rare species. The

    island contains 15 species of reptiles of which 13 are rare species. Blue-

    throated Keeled Lizard, Balkan Green Lizard, European copper skink, Vipera

    ammodytes.

    Distinctive features of its biodiversity are underwater meadows of Posidonia.

    Many plant and animal underwater organisms, starting with marine algae,

    sponges, mollusks, crustaceans, red coral, reptiles, mammals.

    Bredhi i Hotoves-Dangelli National Park

    1996 1 200 ha, 2008 34 361 ha

    It is considered as the most important Mediterranean vegetation relict of

    the country.

    Flora: Abies borisii-regis, Fagus sylvatica, Acer sp, Quercus ilex, Carpinus,

    Luzula, Rubus, Juniperus sp. Etc. Fauna: Ursus arcots, Canis lupus, Vulpes vulpes, martes foina, Capreolus

    capreolus, Rupicapra rupicapra, Lepus europaeus, Sus scrofa etc.

    Due to beautiful and picturesque nature, healthy climate, pure air and

    closeness of urban areas, this Park gives tourists recuperative and sportive

    values during every season of the year. Different types of tourism offeredhere include eco-tourism, camping, excursions etc.

    Accipiter sp,

    Untouched forest area (beech).

    Butrinti National Park

    1948 - Site of historical importance.

    1992 - UNESCO World Heritage Site

    2000 2 600 ha, 2005 8 591 ha.

    Ramsar site, Flora: Quercus ilex, Quercus robur, Alnus glutinosa, Ulmus sp,

    Quercus macrolepis etc.

    Fauna: Testudo marginata, Lutra lutra, Fishes and birds

    Is the most complete PA in Albania (web, Information center,promotional and publishing materials, etc).

    Institutional Support for Protected Areas in Albania. The project will

    contribute to the enhancement of local socio-economic conditions through thepromotion of alternative sustainable economic activities for local populations

    residing near or within two selected sites: Shebenik-JabllanicNational Park

    and the Protected Water and Terrestrial Landscape of the Buna River and

    surrounding area. IUCN + Italian Cooperation

    Technical Assistance for strengthening the capacity of the Ministry ofEnvironment, Forests and Water Administration in Albania for law drafting and

    enforcement of national environmental legislation. In the frame of this project,

    the management plans for sixPAs will be prepared during next 18 months; Alps

    NP, Bredhi i Hotoves NP, Mali i Tomorrit NP, Martanesh-Bize-Mali me Gropa PL,

    Liqeni i Pogradecit PL, Korab-KoritnikNP. EuropeAid/130987/C/SER/AL

    The implementation of conceptions for the conservation and the sustainable

    use of the biodiversity, including agro-diversity in the Albanian Alps.
