HELMET LIFETIME RECOMMENDATIONSA safety helmet’s ‘safe to use’ age is dependent upon on a number ofvariable factors that must be assessed b y the user through a processor careful monitoring and regular inspection prior to use. The dateclock located on the peak of a helmet shell is purely an indication ofwhen the shell was manufactured and does not accurately indicatewhat time period a safety helmet remains safe to use.

The most important and relevant date to record in terms of safety isthe date of first use and this should always be written immediatelyon the label provided in the back of the helmet. Polymers aredurable materials and only really begin to change their mechanicalproperties when they are exposed to sunlight and industrialhazards.

If left unused in conditions totally deficient of light, moisture andextremes of temperature a helmet shell does not have a short shelflife or short sell by date, infact its physical condition will not alter forsome period of time. A safety helmet’s lifetime is reduced by anumber of different factors: • Impacts and abrasions • Temperature extremes • UV light exposure • Molten metal splash • Chemical exposure • Electrical arc flash

EUROPEAN STANDARDS FOR HEADPROTECTIONSafety and protective helmets are designed so that the energy developedduring an impact is absorbed by the partial destruction of the cap and theharness. We draw users attention on the possible dangers when modifyingor doing away with one of the original elements of the helmet other thanthose recommended by the manufacturer.

EN 397 STANDARD: PROTECTIVE HELMETS FOR INDUSTRYThe EN397 standard, which regards the "protective helmets for industry",requires the following markings:

Each helmet must bear a moulded or printed marking featuring thefollowing indications:

• the existing European standard number • the name or the manufacturer identification mark • date of the quarter and the year of manufacture • the helmet type • the size or size range.

Further indications, like instructions or recommendations of adjustment,assembling, use, cleaning, disinfecting, maintenance, revision and storage,are specified in the instructions for use.

EN 812 STANDARD: PROTECTIVE HELMETSFOR INDUSTRYThe EN812 standard, regards the shock-proof caps (anti-scalp) of currentuse, used in the industry, to protect head when it hits hard objects liable tocause tearing up or other superficial injuries to the user or knock him out.They are essentially intended for inside use.

A shock-proof cap is not intended to protect against the effects of fallingobjects and must not under any case replace a protective industrial helmetfor this application according to the EN397 standard.

As a manufacturer, it is almost impossible to predict exactly what effectthese combinations will have on a helmet’s ‘safe to use age’. Users mustregularly inspect and maintain their safety helmet and have anappreciation of their work environment when determining when to replacetheir safety helmet. We recommend a maximum in use lifetime of between2 and 5 years from the date of first use. A safety helmet protects arguablythe most important organ in a human’s body and is relatively inexpensiveto replace, if pre-use inspection gives rise to any doubt discard and replaceimmediately.

N.B. Due to the nature of the high visibility colour pigments used in themanufacturing process, high visibility helmet variants have a shorter life-span than standard colour safety helmets. We recommend these colourhelmets are used for no longer than 12 months from the date of first use.

MAINTENANCEHelmets should be inspected prior to each use for signs of deterioration ordamage, with defective parts replaced immediately. Helmets withdamaged shells, e.g.: with cracks, dents, excessive abrasion or severediscolouration must be discarded. Regular cleaning using warm water andmild detergent is likely to help extend the helmet’s lifetime. A brush canbe used to remove stubborn marks and dirt from the shell. Prior to washing,the harness should be removed from the shell to facilitate cleaning. Theuse of solvents, hot water, or harsh abrasives is not recommended.

Manufacturing Date:

EN397 stipulates display of year and quarterof manufacture. There will be somecrossover for a period of time as to the exactmarkings on helmets as we try tostandardise. Therefore old and newmarkings are explained. The first logostipulates the rolling quarter ofmanufacture, the second the year ofmanufacture and currently the material typealso.

EN50365 - Electrical Insulation:

The twin triangle symbol together with ‘Class O’denotes EN50365 approval. Suitable for use byelectricity workers up to 100Vac/1500Vdc.

VDE Electrical Approval:

(1000Vax/1500Vdc) VDE is the symbol of a wellrecognised and trusted electrical certification bodybased in Germany.

Material type:

The flowing arrows and ‘7’ indicate arecycling capability and category for a groupof polymers. HDPE indicates the material ofthe helmet High Density Polyethylene.

Helmet Model Label:

An additional label is placed in the rear of helmetsto indicate optional approvals that are held underEN397 for a specific helmet model, such as, -30oC,MM - Molten Metal or 440V electrical approval. Dateof issue is marked to enable the user to record andmore accurately assess a helmet’s lifetime.

CE Marking:

Mandatory conformity mark for theEuropean Economic Area (EEA) - 0086 is theunique number of the notified body (BSI)that audits the quality systems.

Gost Approval:

Style 300 conforms to Russian GOST approvals.

USE OF ADHESIVE LABELSAdhesive labels can attack the structure of all plastic materials over time.Where labelling is a genuine necessity, we recommend the use of acrylicor water based adhesives only. No solvent based labels or marker pensshould be applied.

WEARING ORIENTATIONProtector helmets are designed and tested to the requirements of EN397,with clear guidelines that helmets must be worn in the correct orientationwith the peak at the front and the size adjustment mechanism at the rear.A helmet’s heatgear should never be removed to reverse its orientation; ifthis advice is ignored there can be no assurance that the helmet will meetits certified performance. Applications that require a reduced peak can besatisfied by specifying a different helmet with a reduced peak, which is idealfor working in confined spaces or a height where greater vision is required.

ACCESSORIESProtector helmets are designed with a universal 30mm accessory slot toenable the connection of a wide variety of face or hearing protection. TheProtector range includes a comprehensive portfolio of face protection,passive and electronic hearing protection, sweatbands, chinstraps,replacement headgear, hygiene and winter liners. The EN169standard ranges from shade 1.2 being the lightest, to 16 the darkest.Anything from shade 8 or above requires a special welding face shieldwhich we currently do not have in our range.As a rough guide, welding safety glasses can be used during gas / brazewelding but not high intensity arc welding. Anyone attempting to eithergas or arc weld should be properly trained and therefore know whichprotective eyewear or face shield is suitable. If you are in any doubt ask aprofessional or your health and safety supervisor. However, the EN169stand does give some guidance as to which shade could be used for acertain application but should be used only as a guide and treated withdiscretion:

poLycarBonate:The main feature of polycarbonate is its resistance to impact. This lensis by far the most resistant of all. Polycarbonate is 10% thinner thanglass and 15% thinner than plastic. But it is a soft plastic and istherefore easily scratched so an anti-scratch coating is applied asstandard. proGreSSiVe or VarifocaL LenSeS:Varifocal lenses do not have any visible lines so they are moreaesthetically appealing. The power gradually changes from the top tothe bottom of the lens. It is a more functional lens because the personwearing this type of lens has “continuous” vision. It makes it possibleto focus on objects at variable distances whereas a bifocal lens onlyallows clear vision at two given distances.

free forM LenSeS:Available on a wide range of lenses, Digital Free Form technologycombines the highest level of visual performance with outstandingstyle. It results from an improved inner part of the lens with asignificantly larger field of vision. EUROPEAN STANDARDS FORHEARING PROTECTIONIt is a proven fact that noise can have serious repercussions at physiological and psychological levels. In effect, noise constitutes areal pollution for everyone's health.

EN352 STANDARD: HEADFASTENERS AND EAR PLUGSThe EN352 European standard is divided into several parts. Every partof the standard is applicable to specific types of protection :

• EN 352-1, EN352-2 and EN352-3 standards deal with safety requirements and tests, respectively regarding head fasteners,earplugs, and head fasteners fixed on protective industrialhelmets.

• These standards establish requirements in regards to the manufacture, design and performances, test methods and the instructions relating to the marking and information intended for the users.

• These standards stipulate the provision of information relating tohead fasteners acoustic fading characteristics, measured in conformity with EN 24869-1 : 1992 standard, and therefore specifya minimal fading level necessary to establish their conformity withthe present specification.

Only hearing protection products with an appropriate certificationmark can be selected. All the hearing protectors bear the EC marking required by the personal protective equipment directive.

In selecting hearing protection, it is imperative to acknowledge thelaws, regulations, uses and techniques. The preceeding criteriaunderline the general points for consideration when selecting. Forfurther details concerning selection please refer to the Europeanstandard EN458 : 1996 (Title : Auditory protection - Recommendationsfor selection, use and maintenance).

At noise levels above 95dB you will need to get an accurate noise assessment tocorrectly select the product. Green and yellow marked products are notsuitable for use in low frequency noise.

Choosing the correct hearing protection for your needs can be difficult. Youneed to ensure you provide the correct level of protection to ensure thatworkers are not over-protected and that a suitable product is chosen. E.A.R. andPeltor have devised this easy-to-use selection system that aids correct choice.

The system uses a simple, logically coloured classification to make the selectionprocess easy. Firstly find out what your noise level is, then look at the aboveicons and establish which band (RNR) the noise level falls into. Take note of thisicon and choose from the products that have this symbol displayed alongside.

earcups are visibly damaged or compromised. Replace ear cushions if damaged.

Clean Wash earcups and ear cushions regularly with mild soap and water. They may not bedipped into water. Do not treat with any other substances, as the ear cushions maydegrade and compromise use.

Replace As ear cushions and foam inserts can degrade over time, replace these every 6-8months under normal wear, or every 3-4 months with heavy use or inhumid/extreme climates.

substances in the air• Failing to select, use, store and maintain the correct RPE can cause

1. Add ½ teaspoon of test solution (in black labelledbottle) into the test nebuliser (marked in black).

2. Make sure the respirator is fitted correctly. Refer to3M fitting instructions or posters for correctprocedure.

3. Put test hood on person.4. Introduce solution in an ‘initial dose’ and start the

exercises. Add a ‘top-up’ dose after every 30seconds as per below:

5. After the initial dose, ask the person to carry out the7 exercises shown in turn for 1 minute each andindicate immediately if solution is tasted.Remember to add ‘top-up’ dose every 30 seconds.

PASSIVE FALL ARREST SYSTEMSFalls are the single most common cause of deaths in UK & Ireland'sworkplace. During 2004/2005 falls from height accounted for 53 fatalitiesand around 3,800 major injuries such as broken bones and fracturedskulls. It's easy to see why the Health and Safety Executive has madereducing these numbers a priority.

The HSE Work at Height Regulations 2005 provides guidelines as to whatemployers need to do to comply. They have a duty to safeguard theiremployees by undertaking risk assessment to ensure work at height isproperly planned, appropriately supervised and carried out in a safemanner. This includes the provision of appropriate equipment tominimise the distance and the consequences of a fall should one occur.All of the top house builders use Passive Fall Arrest Systems, designed tohelp them comply with the latest HSE regulations.

The Passive Fall Arrest or Landing System comprises a series of robust yetlightweight bags filled with an energy absorbent material. Incircumstances where the risk of a fall cannot be eliminated, these bagsprovide a more yielding surface, hence reducing the possibility of seriousinjuries.

Manufactured using 75% recycled materials, the bags are available invarious sizes, providing a flexible solution whatever the customer's needs.

The bags are quickly and easily installed using a simple clip method,

providing a closely interlocked surface to completely fill the availablespace. They can be installed by on-site labour after minimal training bysite management, requiring no complicated installation equipment andno electrical power.

WHERE TO USE A PASSIVE LANDING SYSTEM ANDCORRECT INSTALLATIONThe Landing System was originally designed to protect carpenters andbricklayers working inside a building construction, where the bags will beenclosed by walls or partitions. The bags can be installed at ground floorlevel as soon as the first lift scaffold is installed, ensuring protectionagainst falls. On first or subsequent floors, protecting workers bricklayingor installing trusses. Outside the house building industry too there issignificant interest in this range of products which have provedadaptable enough to provide protection across a wide range ofapplications where falls from height may occur.

The Landing System is installed by site staff trained and certified by theJBS or their appointed agents. The installation is then checked andapproved by a designated person employed by the main contractor ordeveloper. Each bag must be visually inspected to ensure there is nodamage to the outer casing. The overall appearance of the bag shouldalso be assessed to check that the energy absorbent material has notbeen crushed and any build-up of mortar or mud should be removed.The clips must also be inspected for damage to ensure they are fullyoperational.

Wherever the bags are to be used, the area should be cleared of allrubbish and sharp objects and swept thoroughly to provide a clearsurface. The bags are very strong, but should not be walked upon unlessabsolutely necessary. Continual walking on the bags will eventuallycompress the energy-absorbing fill and reduce effectiveness.
