Do you see a man wise in his own eyes? There is more hope for a fool than for him. The sluggard is wiser in his own eyes than seven men who answer discreetly. (NIV) 3. Proverbs 28:26, He who trusts in himself is a fool, but he who walks in wisdom is kept safe. (NIV)

4. Jeremiah 9:23-24, This is what the LORD says:"Let not the wise man boast of his wisdom or the strong man boast of his strength or the rich man boast of his riches, but let him who boasts boast about this: that he understands and knows me, that I am the LORD, who exercises kindness, justice and righteousness on earth, for in these I delight," declares the LORD. (NIV)

5. Romans 12:16, Be of the same mind one toward another. Mind not high things, but condescend to men of low estate. Be not wise in your own conceits. (KJV)

1. Grapes were a prime crop of Israel in both Old and New Testament times.

C. Obeying God is conducive to material success.

1. Deuteronomy 28:1-8, If you fully obey the LORD your God and carefully follow all his commands I give you today, the LORD your God will set you high above all the nations on earth. All these blessings will come upon you and accompany you if you obey the LORD your God: You will be blessed in the city and blessed in the country. The fruit of your womb will be blessed, and the crops of your land and the young of your livestock—the calves of your herds and the lambs of your flocks. Your basket and your kneading trough will be blessed. You will be blessed when you come in and blessed when you go out. The LORD will grant that the enemies who rise up against you will be defeated before you. They will come at you from one direction but flee from you in seven. I will prevent pests from devouring your crops, and the vines in your fields will not cast their fruit," says the LORD Almighty. "Then all the nations will call you blessed, for yours will be a delightful land," says the LORD Almighty. (NIV)

Submit to God

Proverbs 3:11-12, My son, do not despise the LORD's discipline and do not resent his rebuke, because the LORD disciplines those he loves, as a father the son he delights in. (NIV) Proverbs 3:11, My son, do not despise the LORD's discipline and do not resent his rebuke, (NIV) I. We are to welcome the LORD’s discipline, chastening, instruction, correction, rebuke.

A. These corrective devises are designed to keep us in the paths of righteousness and, as such, are not to be despised resented, rejected nor spurned. B. “Chastening (musar) and correction (tokhachah) … are virtually synonymous pointing to correction by reproof and, when necessary, by punishment,” Smith stated.

www.biblestudyworkshop.org 19

1. Smith further wrote that God should not be forgotten either in times of prosperity nor in times of adversity. 2. We are not to be angry with God when he corrects us because his discipline is designed for our good, our righteous improvement.

Proverbs 3:12, because the LORD disciplines those he loves, as a father the son he delights in. (NIV) I. The LORD disciplines those he loves, …

A. Smith wrote, “Misfortune tends either to draw people closer to the Lord, or to make them resolute in evil. The teacher is urging the former reaction.”

1. Deuteronomy 8:5, Know then in your heart that as a man disciplines his son, so the LORD your God disciplines you. (NIV)

2. Hebrews 12:5-11, And ye have forgotten the exhortation which speaketh unto you as unto children, My son, despise not thou the chastening of the Lord, nor faint when thou art rebuked of him: For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth. If ye endure chastening, God dealeth with you as with sons; for what son is he whom the father chasteneth not? But if ye be without chastisement, whereof all are partakers, then are ye bastards, and not sons. Furthermore we have had fathers of our flesh which corrected us, and we gave them reverence: shall we not much rather be in subjection unto the Father of spirits, and live? For they verily for a few days chastened us after their own pleasure; but he for our profit, that we might be partakers of his holiness. Now no chastening for the

present seemeth to be joyous, but grievous: nevertheless afterward it yieldeth the peaceable fruit of righteousness unto them which are exercised thereby. (KJV)

II. just as a father disciplines a beloved son.

A. The realization of the fact that we are disciplined because we are beloved children of God helps us bear the chastening and profit it.

Blessings of Acquiring Wisdom

Proverbs 3:13-18, Blessed is the man who finds wisdom, the man who gains understanding, for she is more profitable than silver and yields better returns than gold. She is more precious than rubies; nothing you desire can com-pare with her. Long life is in her right hand; in her left hand are riches and honor. Her ways are pleasant ways, and all her paths are peace. She is a tree of life to those who embrace her; those who lay hold of her will be blessed. (NIV) Note: “The teacher continues to enumerate the advantages of acquiring wisdom.” (Smith) Proverbs 3:13, Blessed is the man who finds wisdom, the man who gains understanding (NIV) I. Blessed (happy) is the person who finds, gains, gets wisdom and understanding, both of which are derived from God.

A. Proverbs 2:4, and if you look for it as for silver and search for it as for hidden treasure, (NIV) B. Spiritual joy and tranquility come to those who have acquired wisdom and understanding.

C. Finding wisdom, referenced to in the feminine gender, is like finding a devoted spouse. (Bland)

1. Proverbs 18:22, He who finds a wife finds what is good and receives favor from the LORD. (NIV) 2. Proverbs 31:10, A wife of noble character who can find? She is worth far more than rubies. (NIV)

A. Kidner via Coffman wrote, “Wisdom will make you richer than money ever will.”

Proverbs 3:15, She is more precious than rubies; nothing you desire can com-pare with her (NIV) I. Wisdom, understanding is more precious than rubies (pearls).

A. Wisdom, understanding is of incomparable value and more to be desired than any other thing. B. Rubies, pearls may well represent precious stones in general, but these cannot purchase wisdom and understanding.

1. Job 28:12-28, "But where can wisdom be found? Where does understanding dwell? Man does not comprehend its worth; it cannot be found in the land of the living. The deep says, 'It is not in me'; the sea says, 'It is not with me.' It cannot be bought with the finest gold, nor can its price be weighed in silver. It cannot be bought

with the gold of Ophir, with precious onyx or sapphires. Neither gold nor crystal can compare with it, nor can it be had for jewels of gold. Coral and jasper are not worthy of mention; the price of wisdom is beyond rubies. The topaz of Cush cannot compare with it; it cannot be bought with pure gold. "Where then does wisdom come from? Where does understanding dwell? It is hidden from the eyes of every living thing, concealed even from the birds of the air. Destruction and Death say, 'Only a rumor of it has reached our ears.' God understands the way to it and he alone knows where it dwells, for he views the ends of the earth and sees everything under the heavens. When he established the force of the wind and measured out the waters, when he made a decree for the rain and a path for the thunderstorm, then he looked at wisdom and appraised it; he confirmed it and tested it. And he said to man, 'The fear of the Lord—that is wisdom, and to shun evil is understanding.' " (NIV)

Proverbs 3:16, Long life is in her right hand; in her left hand are riches and honor. (NIV) I. Wisdom is the way to:

A. long life,

1. “A wicked man shortens his days by excesses; a righteous man prolongs his by temperance, “Clarke wrote”.

Fifth Discourse

Wisdom and Creation

Proverbs 3:19-26, By wisdom the LORD laid the earth's foundations, by understanding he set the heavens in place; by his knowledge the deeps were divided, and the clouds let drop the dew. My son, preserve sound judgment and discernment, do not let them out of your sight; they will be life for you, an ornament to grace your neck. Then you will go on your way in safety, and your foot will not stumble; when you lie down, you will not be afraid; when you lie down, your sleep will be sweet. Have no fear of sudden disaster or of the ruin that overtakes the wicked, for the LORD will be your confidence and will keep your foot from being snared. (NIV) Note: “Reference to the tree of life (v. 18) may have triggered the following discussion of wisdom as the power by which God created the world and by which he governs it,” Smith wrote.

The Power of God

Discourse Six

The Duties of Wisdom

Proverbs 3:27-35, Do not withhold good from those who deserve it, when it is in your power to act. Do not say to your neighbor, "Come back later; I'll give it tomorrow"—when you now have it with you. Do not plot harm against your neighbor, who lives trustfully near you. Do not accuse a man for no reason— when he has done you no harm. Do not envy a violent man or choose any of his ways, for the LORD detests a perverse man but takes the upright into his confidence. The LORD's curse is on the house of the wicked, but he blesses the home of the righteous. He mocks proud mockers but gives grace to the humble. The wise inherit honor, but fools he holds up to shame. (NIV)

Exhortation Regarding Benevolence

Proverbs 3:27-30, Do not withhold good from those who deserve it, when it is in your power to act. Do not say to your neighbor, "Come back later; I'll give it tomorrow"—when you now have it with you. Do not plot harm against your neighbor, who lives trustfully near you. Do not accuse a man for no reason— when he has done you no harm. (NIV) Note: Smith well wrote, “Wisdom must be translated into action and lifestyle.” Proverbs 3:27, Do not withhold good from those who deserve it, when it is in your power to act. (NIV)

I. Do not withhold good from those who are entitled to it, who deserve it, when it is within your power to act.

A. Galatians 6:10, As we have therefore opportunity, let us do good unto all men, especially unto them who are of the household of faith. (KJV) B. We own nothing, but are simply stewards of that with which we have been entrusted. (See Smith) C. James 2:13, For he shall have judgment without mercy, that hath shewed no mercy; and mercy rejoiceth against judgment. (KJV) D. Luke 16:19-31, There was a certain rich man, which was clothed in purple and fine linen, and fared sumptuously every day: And there was a certain beggar named Lazarus, which was laid at his gate, full of sores, And desiring to be fed with the crumbs which fell from the rich man's table: moreover the dogs came and licked his sores. And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham's bosom: the rich man also died, and was buried; And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom. And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame. But Abraham said, Son, remember that thou in thy lifetime receivedst thy good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things: but now he is comforted, and thou art tormented. And beside all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed: so that they which would pass from hence to you cannot; neither can they pass to us, that would come from thence. Then he said, I pray thee therefore, father, that thou wouldest send him to my father's house: For I have five brethren; that he may testify unto them, lest they also come

into this place of torment. Abraham saith unto him, They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them. And he said, Nay, father Abraham: but if one went unto them from the dead, they will repent. And he said unto him, If they hear not Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded, though one rose from the dead. (KJV) E. “those who are entitled to it” certainly include employees who have earned their wages and all to whom we are honestly indebted.

Proverbs 3:28, Do not say to your neighbor, "Come back later; I'll give it tomorrow"—when you now have it with you. (NIV) I. Do not postpone helping your neighbor when you have the ability and means to help him now.

A. Bland defines neighbor in this context as “one who resides in one’s sphere of influence.” B. Do right to all we know, with whom we come in contact.

Proverbs 3:29, Do not plot harm against your neighbor, who lives trustfully near you. (NIV) I. Do not devise evil, plot harm against your neighbor who trusts you.

A. This is treachery! B. Remember “Jezebel’s conspiracy against Naboth,” bland re-minds us.

1. 1 Kings 21:1-26, Some time later there was an incident involving a vineyard belonging to Naboth the Jezreelite. The vineyard was in Jezreel, close to the palace of Ahab king of Samaria. Ahab said to Naboth, "Let me have

your vineyard to use for a vegetable garden, since it is close to my palace. In exchange I will give you a better vineyard or, if you prefer, I will pay you whatever it is worth." But Naboth replied, "The LORD forbid that I should give you the inheritance of my fathers." So Ahab went home, sullen and angry because Naboth the Jezreelite had said, "I will not give you the inheritance of my fathers." He lay on his bed sulking and refused to eat. His wife Jezebel came in and asked him, "Why are you so sullen? Why won't you eat?" He answered her, "Because I said to Naboth the Jezreelite, 'Sell me your vineyard; or if you prefer, I will give you another vineyard in its place.' But he said, 'I will not give you my vineyard.' " Jezebel his wife said, "Is this how you act as king over Israel? Get up and eat! Cheer up. I'll get you the vineyard of Naboth the Jezreelite." So she wrote letters in Ahab's name, placed his seal on them, and sent them to the elders and nobles who lived in Naboth's city with him. In those letters she wrote: "Proclaim a day of fasting and seat Naboth in a prominent place among the people. But seat two scoundrels opposite him and have them testify that he has cursed both God and the king. Then take him out and stone him to death." So the elders and nobles who lived in Naboth's city did as Jezebel directed in the letters she had written to them. They proclaimed a fast and seated Naboth in a prominent place among the people. Then two scoundrels came and sat opposite him and brought charges against Naboth before the people, saying, "Naboth has cursed both God and the king." So they took him outside the city and stoned him to death. Then they sent word to Jezebel: "Naboth has been stoned and is dead." As soon as Jezebel heard that Naboth had been stoned to death, she said to Ahab, "Get up and take possession of the vineyard of Naboth the Jezreelite that he refused to sell you. He is no longer alive, but dead."

When Ahab heard that Naboth was dead, he got up and went down to take possession of Naboth's vineyard. Then the word of the LORD came to Elijah the Tishbite: "Go down to meet Ahab king of Israel, who rules in Samaria. He is now in Naboth's vineyard, where he has gone to take possession of it. Say to him, 'This is what the LORD says: Have you not murdered a man and seized his property?' Then say to him, 'This is what the LORD says: In the place where dogs licked up Naboth's blood, dogs will lick up your blood—yes, yours!' " Ahab said to Elijah, "So you have found me, my enemy!" "I have found you," he answered, "because you have sold yourself to do evil in the eyes of the LORD. 'I am going to bring disaster on you. I will consume your descendants and cut off from Ahab every last male in Israel—slave or free. I will make your house like that of Jeroboam son of Nebat and that of Baasha son of Ahijah, because you have provoked me to anger and have caused Israel to sin.' "And also concerning Jezebel the LORD says: 'Dogs will devour Jezebel by the wall of Jezreel.' "Dogs will eat those belonging to Ahab who die in the city, and the birds of the air will feed on those who die in the country." (There was never a man like Ahab, who sold himself to do evil in the eyes of the LORD, urged on by Jezebel his wife. He behaved in the vilest manner by going after idols, like the Amorites the LORD drove out before Israel.) (NIV)

Proverbs 3:30, Do not accuse a man for no reason— when he has done you no harm. (NIV) I. Do not ? with, accuse a person who has done you no harm.

A. Don’t be contentious, pick a quarrel when there is not real cause for it.

1. Nebuchadnezzar, Haman and Herod are examples of pride that brought God’s vengeance upon its possessors.

a. Daniel 4:28-33, All this happened to King Nebuchadnezzar. Twelve months later, as the king was walking on the roof of the royal palace of Babylon, he said, "Is not this the great Babylon I have built as the royal residence, by my mighty power and for the glory of my majesty?" The words were still on his lips when a voice came from heaven, "This is what is decreed for you, King Nebuchadnezzar: Your royal authority has been taken from you. You will be driven away from people and will live with the wild animals; you will eat grass like cattle. Seven times will pass by for you until you acknowledge that the Most High is sovereign over the kingdoms of men and gives them to anyone he wishes." Immediately what had been said about Nebuchadnezzar was fulfilled. He was driven away from people and ate grass like cattle. His body was drenched with the dew of heaven until his hair grew like the feathers of an eagle and his nails like the claws of a bird. (NIV) b. Esther 7:1-10, So the king and Haman went to dine with Queen Esther, and as they were drinking wine on that second day, the king again asked, "Queen Esther, what is your petition? It will be given you. What is your request? Even up to half the kingdom, it will be granted." Then Queen Esther answered, "If I have found favor with you, O king, and if it pleases your majesty, grant me my life—this is my petition. And spare my people—this is my request. For I and my people have been sold for

destruction and slaughter and annihilation. If we had merely been sold as male and female slaves, I would have kept quiet, because no such distress would justify disturbing the king." King Xerxes asked Queen Esther, "Who is he? Where is the man who has dared to do such a thing?" Esther said, "The adversary and enemy is this vile Haman." Then Haman was terrified before the king and queen. The king got up in a rage, left his wine and went out into the palace garden. But Haman, realizing that the king had already decided his fate, stayed behind to beg Queen Esther for his life. Just as the king returned from the palace garden to the banquet hall, Haman was falling on the couch where Esther was reclining. The king exclaimed, "Will he even molest the queen while she is with me in the house?" As soon as the word left the king's mouth, they covered Haman's face. Then Harbona, one of the eunuchs attending the king, said, "A gallows seventy-five feet high stands by Haman's house. He had it made for Mordecai, who spoke up to help the king." The king said, "Hang him on it!" So they hanged Haman on the gallows he had prepared for Mordecai. Then the king's fury subsided. (NIV)

c. Acts 12:19-23, And when Herod had sought for him, and found him not, he examined the keepers, and commanded that they should be put to death. And he went down from Judaea to Caesarea, and there abode. And Herod was highly displeased with them of Tyre and Sidon: but they came with one accord to him, and, having made Blastus the king's chamberlain their friend, desired peace; because their country was nourished by the king's country. sat upon his throne, and made an oration unto them. And the people gave a shout, saying, It is the voice of a god, and not of a man. And immediately the angel of the Lord smote him, because he gave not God the glory: and he was eaten of worms, and gave up the ghost. (KJV)
