    GreetingsfromSamban

    It

    is

    hard

    for

    us

    to

    believe

    that the

    first

    quarter

    of 1985 is

    now

    history. These f i

    We

    ill

    have

    to back

    up

    to

    December of last year in

order to bring you up to the present.

    Christmas 1984)was pent

    n

    Samban.

    We

    f inished

    the Primer workshop at Ukarumpa

    and ust

    barely

    had enough

    time

    to getdown

    to

    Madang,buy

    a ew

    groceries,

    and

    make t

    out

    to

    Samban

    on

    he

    24th.

    In

    nticipation

    of

    our return, not

    a

    whole

    ot of Christmas ele

    bration

planning had been done. So we ot

together with some folks and planned

    a

    sports' day,

    plus some extra worship times.

    We had

    opened

    our

    presents

    earlier

    in

    Madang.

    The

    oys

    did

    not

    seem

    to

    mind

    this

    at

    all.

    We ctually spent

    ust

    about twoand

    a

    alf

    weeks before

    we went

    back into

    Madang

    or

    our

    Annual Meeting. If

    i t

    hadn't

    been

    for

    Christmas, we

    would

    have probably just

    stayed

    in

    Madang

    or

    that time, but our

    folks

    out here were r e a l l y wanting

    us

    to

    spend

    Christmas

    ith

    them.

    The

    week ollowing

    th e

    Annual

    Meeting

    we

    tayed

    in Madang

    o

    work

    with

    our

    computer

    specialist to

    get

    some

    stencils cut for

    our

    test primer.

    We got back to

    Samban the

    fir s t of

February. While in Madang had set

    Balu

    and Maso,my anguage

    helpers, o

    the

    task

    of

    Jesse

    and Joshua

    to open their Christmas

    making

    a ough

    draft

    of

    the

    Easter

    story.

    Wfe

    began

    going over

    t h e i r work i n hopes

    of

    preparing a Botin

    translation

    of the Easter

    story. The

    ellows ound t

    really hard, ince

    t

    was heir

    i r s t

    try at n-depth translation. We

spent a lot of time talking about

    some

    concepts that were new to

    them,

    specially

    in

    regard

    to

    expressingthem

    n

    Botin. While this

    was going on, we

    began s i l k

    screening

    th e

    Transition Primer

    test

    booklets. Silk

    screening is the primitive way

    to

    mimeograph without benefit

    of a

    achine. t

    i s

a rather slow process, but very

    e f f e c t i v e .

This was also new to our fellows,

    but

    we

    managed to

    get

    about thirty booklets

    printed

    and stapled together.

    Also

    in

    February,we egan anew

    ethod of

presenting our memory verses ~ via pocket

    charts. These

    charts are

    made to enable

    teachers to display whole sentences

    or

    parts

    depending

    on

    the task at

    hand. I t has

    been

    good

    for

    the

    i l l i t e r a t e folk who

    have

    begun

    getting

    basic concepts of reading

    from

    e f t

    to

    r i g h t , as well as learning a ew sight words.

    Using this method, we have

    seen

    improvement

    n people, lready i t e r a t e in the

    trade language, who beforehand

    had been

    more r

    lessstymied in

    their efforts

    to read the

vernacular. Also, with this method, we

    have

    been

    more or

less assured th at by he

    time

    we

    f i

    nish

a session with a particular verse,

    that

    just

    about

    everybody

    attending

    can

    r e c i t e

    i t .

    March proved to be a

    really

    busy month.

    The

    i

    rst week we onducted our

    test class of

the Transition Primer. We ad elected about

    10 people

    who

    we thought would give

    us

a cross-section of trade language literacy

    s k i l l s .

    We

    went

    hrough

    the

    primer teaching

    Bonita

    in

    one

    f the teaching

    sessions.

    them: e t t e r s

    they already knewfrom

    idgin

    that

were the same in Botin, new

    combinations of

    previously known

    l e t t e r s ,

    and

    new

    l e t t e r s . During this process, th e

    students

    were

    able

    to

    help

    us

    efine the book

    i t s e l f . With

    their new

    nsightsand nowledge

    of Botin,

    they

    were able to help

    us

    ind many

    small

    errors

    that would really make a

    difference in the

    primer.

Also during the irst week fMarch, e ere

    able to go over

    our

    Easter story text

    with the

    big

    men in

    the area.

    We

    earned a

    ot about

    dialect

    differences

    ustin

    our

    immediate

    rea.

We ere really encouraged by their interest.

The econd weekfound usmaking he inal

    correctionson he primer,

    hecking

    t

    over ust

one more ime before going into

    Madang.

    We

    were

    visited

    by

    Martha

    Wade,who had been

    assisting

    the

    Dan Wilcoxes

    the

    previous two

    weeks,and

    would

    be oing

    back o

    Madang

    on

    our

    flight. (Martha

    will be

    PBT's Assistant

Director of Language Affairs as of May,

    which

    means

    she

    w i l l

    be

    overseeing

    a l l

    th e

village language programs in whichPBT s

    involved.) While she

    was here,

    we

    id

    some

    language awareness exercises with our

    language

    helpers and rechecked the

    Christmas

    story which

    Martha

    had assisted

    with

    two

    ears ago hile she

    was

    n Samban.

    The last

week of March was spent in

    Madang etting

    our

    Transition Primer

    ready

    for

    the

    p r i n t e r .

    We

    pent

    a

    o t

    of

    time

    in the

    computer

    room

    correcting entry errors,

running printouts to ch eck formating

    errors,

    and confusing

    our

    computer s p e c i a l i s t , Jan

    Messersmith, with a l l

    the

    changes along

    th e

    way. Even though Jan

    programmed

    th e

computer with a format that we desired on

the printout we t i l l had ospend time cutting

    and

    pasting drawingson r i a l

    pages

    to make

    sure

    they

    would

    i

    t .

    With

    the

    help

    of

    a

    opier,

    reducing

    and

    enlarging pictures

    as

    needed,

    and h e

    ability

of he computer o lay t

    a l l

    out

    and print

    t

    up,we ere able to get

    t camera-

    ready in about

    five working

    days. We ere

    certainly impressed

    by the

    whole

    procedure.

    We are hoping to

    have the

    books out

    in

    th e

    village

    by

the end of April. If possible, we

    hope

    to

    have

a fly-in to celebrate our irst

    book

    for

    the Botin

    people.

    A

    fly-in

    consists

    of

    as many as

    possible of

    our

    fellow

    missionaries

    flying in to

    spend

    the day with

us to celebrate. As roven by he

    was

    As

    f

    now

    we

    are

    entering our a s t

    s t i n t

    in

    the

    along as we

    n t i c i p a t e heading

    back

    o family

    and friends

    Stateside.

    We t i l l

    have

    some

    goals

    that

    we

    ould l i k e to accomplish

    these

    nexttwo months. We ope

    to

    get the

    memory

    verses

    we have

    ranslated,

    plus a l l the songs

    the people

    sing in Botin, nto

    a

    ooklet. Since

    the

    people

    have

    been putting some of the

    verses

    to music,

    t

    will provide them with an

    aid for worship and

    or

    spiritual growth. This

    will be

    an

    in-village project

    in order to

    train

    our

    fellows in

    the

    production of local literacy

    materials.

    During

    his

    time,

    ur aim

    s

    to

    further

    refine

    our language

    s k i l l s ,

    along

    with

    developing

    some

    techniques

    of

    maintaining

    our

    fluency

    level

    during

    furlough. This,plus inishing up

    school programs

    for

    Jesse and Joshua,

    getting

    the

    house et or

    a ear's

    vacancy, nd

    getting everything a l l

    packed

    up,adds up o a

    busy time.

    At

hesame ime,we ill endeavor to spend

    some

    uality

    time with the folk

    here.

    Our olk

    are not very eager

    for us

    to leave, yet they

    recognize

    our desire

    to

    see our

    families

    again.

    We

    re

    praying that

    what

    wehave een able to

    accomplish this

    term

    will aid them in

    their

    s p i r i t u a l growth during th e next

    year, s

    well

    as

    to stimulate

    their interest in vernacular

    literacy.

    Aswe

    ook

    ahead o the coming ear,we

    re

    excited with the prospects of

    seeing

    family,

    friends,and supporters,as ell as

    The
