ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

We wish to express our sincere gratitude to our social psychology lecturer, Mr. Shankar for

giving us this assignment that provide us an opportunity to learn more about social

psychology. First and foremost, his valuable guidance and advice throughout this assignment

inspired us greatly to work in this assignment. Moreover, this project would not be successful

without the support of Taylor’s University. They provide us with a comfortable and

convenience place for us to film our project, for instance an air-conditioned classroom, tables

and chairs which we really need in our video shooting. We would like to take this opportunity

to acknowledge the corporation of members in our group during video shooting. Once again,

we thank to all those who encouraged and helped us in preparing this project.

INTRODUCTION

In a group of 5, we are required to come up with a video clip within 3 to 5 minutes long by

incorporating the concepts we learned. The video clip will be presenting to the class.

Objectives of this assignment is to allow students to recognize and identify the connections

among concepts and perspectives within psychology and with other disciplines.

Moreover, students will learn how to implement all these concepts into their daily basis. By

doing this, students would have a better understanding of the concepts and theories hence

enhance our knowledge of psychology. This would aid everyone in life to achieve their goals

especially in the aspect of communication with others, also to have a better analysing skill.

METHOD

Apparatus/Materials

Camera:

A Canon Camera was used to film our scenes for our video clip.

Smartphone:

Not just a camera was used, some scenes and sound are recorded using our smartphone as

well.

Laptops:

Editing and Process video by using our laptops, also act as a prop in our video clip.

Procedures

1. Five Concepts

- Meetings were conducted to decide the concepts to use for our conceptual

video. After all the discussions we decided to use Social Learning

Perspective, False Consensus Effect, Self-Serving Bias, Upward

Counterfactuals and Persuasion.

2. Producing Storyline

- After we’ve chosen the concepts for our video, we had discussions and

brainstorming process to plan the plot, people and venue for our video

shooting.

3. Video Shooting

- Video has taken place in Syopz Mall Coffee Bean, E8 X-Space, E3.06, E3.12.

Summary of Video Clip

Scene 1

Venue - E3.12

Gabriel was revising two of his friends, Ivan and Allester before their classes start.

Ivan and Allester were both getting bored and wanted to leave, Gabriel joined them as

well. Eventually they left classroom together.

Scene 2

Venue - X-Space

They all got home late. Gabriel supposed that Ivan and Allester did not not study for

examination so he gave up studying. In fact, both of them studied before that.

Scene 3

Venue - E3.06

The day when they got back their result, Gabriel failed the subject. As he went home,

his mother scolded him. He then started to blame on his lecturer whom did not teach

him well.

Scene 4

Venue - E3.06

His mother urged Gabriel to score well like his elder sister did. His mother grounded

him. He started regretting for his laziness and said “if only I stayed home, I might

study and get a better result”.

Scene 5

Venue - X-Space, E3.06

His sister came up to persuade him to study well for his future. He changed his

DISCUSSION

1. Social Learning Perspective

Social Learning explains how people learn new behaviours, values, and attitudes by

observing others. It requires attention to the person observed, remembering the

observed behaviour, the ability to replicate the behaviour, and a motivation to act the

same way. This concept is demonstrated in our video when Gabriel was doing his

revision together with two of his friends before their classes start. Ivan and Allester

find it boring to do revision, they wanted to chill out at Coffee Bean and skip the

following classes. Gabriel saw their behaviors then he stopped revising, he packed his

stuffs and left the classroom with them. Social Learning is shown when he stops his

revision and follows his friends to Coffee Bean.

2. False Consensus Effect

Assuming that the vast majority of other people also feel the same way as you do.

When people have the tendency to overestimate the degree to which other people

agree with our beliefs, values, attitudes, and behaviours. Therefore creating a false

consensus, which will influence our decisions and behaviours. It was shown when

they got back home late. Gabriel supposed that Ivan and Allester did not study at all

as he knew they were spending the whole afternoon having fun with each other thus

assuming both of them did not study at all. The consensus influenced his decision

from studying. In fact, Allester and Ivan did study earlier before that.

3. The Self-Serving Bias

It refers to our tendency to take personal credit for success while blaming outside

sources for our failures. As an example, a person gets an A for his test and attribute it

to his own cleverness. In conversely, when he gets a C for the test he blames lecturers

for not teaching him well. It is clearly explained in our video when lecturer was

distributing their papers back to them, Gabriel got F which indicates he failed the

subject. As soon as he got home, his mother lectured him for the outcome. However,

he put the blame on his lecturer and claimed that they did not teach him well. Self-

serving bias is shown in external attribution when he blamed his lecturer instead of his

own laziness.

4. Upward Counterfactuals Thinking

A concept that involves the human tendency to create possible alternatives to life

events that have already occurred “It could have been worst" and "I could have done it

better." These are the types of Counterfactuals Thinking, it refers to Downward

Counterfactuals and the latter, Upward Counterfactuals. Upward counterfactuals

Page 8: Psychology Video Presentation Report

might not, at least initially, improve mood, but they do uncover insights or knowledge

that can be used to enhance performance in the future. It refers to an event that had

happened, an individual regret for not doing better or wishing he/she had done it

differently. A clear example is shown in the video when Gabriel’s mother urged him

to score well like his elder sister did. His mother grounded him. He then started

regretting for being lazy, telling himself that if only he stayed home and studied, he

could have done better.

5. Persuasion

The act of causing people to do or believe something, influencing people to change

their decisions, beliefs, attitudes, intentions, motivations, or behaviours. As

demonstrated in our video is when his sister came up to persuade Gabriel to study

well for his future. He then changed his attitude towards his studies. Months later, he

got a better result as compared to his previous examination.

CONCLUSION

All in all, we are now able to recognize and identify the connections among concepts and

perspectives within psychology and with other disciplines through this assignment. Through

this video, we learned and manage to relate the components in social psychology to our daily

basis. After analysing, reflection and evaluation, from concepts we developed ideas to

implement to the video clip. Moreover, we have learned how to film a video in different

perspectives. Although acting was not our strong point, at least we have tried our best to

perform well in the video. In a nutshell, this is a very good and unique experience for us to

learn more regarding social psychology. Not only in understanding more concepts, we had

fun during video shooting as well.
