After finishing their interviews - usually with about 1,000 people, sometimes more - Pollsters adjust the answers to make sure they reflect Census Bureau data on the population like gender, age, education, and race. For example, if the proportion of women interviewed is smaller than their actual share of the country’s population, their answers are given more “weight” to balance that out. Some pollsters make these adjustments different than others.

Are you aware that Claude Pepper is known all over Washington as a shameless extrovert? Not only that, but this man is reliably reported to practice nepotism with his sister-in-law, he has a brother who is a known homo sapiens, and he has a sister who was once a thespian in wicked New York. Worst of all, it is an established fact that Mr. Pepper, before his marriage, habitually practiced celibacy.

Ooops…

After the 2000 election, when Terry McAuliffe took over as chair of the Democratic Party, he was horrified to discover that the party had no voter files to help contact potential supporters. When he dove into the state party lists, he found there were 27 million wrong addresses and phone numbers. In Florida, the Democratic Party had more than 1.1 million incorrect files. McAuliffe fumed, “Don’t you think we could have found 537 votes if we had corrected that information earlier and contacted 1.1 million more people?”
