Pumpkin Carving 101Never carved a pumpkin before? No worries--We've got you covered!

Here's how to get it done, no wands required.

Transfer your designThis can be done in a variety of ways, but i like to tape my paper pattern to my pumpkin

and then use a thumbtack to poke holes very closely together along the lines of the design. When you remove the paper, you'll have an outline of the pattern dotted onto the

pumpkin.

Carve a LidUse a sharp knife or a pumpkin saw to carve a large circular lid out of the pumpkin.Adding a notch makes it easier to line up later when you go to light your pumpkin.

Scoop out the gutsRemove all of the pulp and seeds from your pumpkin. If you wish, you can save your seeds to roast for a yummy snack! If your pumpkin has thick walls, a metal spoon with a good edge for scraping can help thin them out a little, which will make carving and shaving easier.

Carve Your designUsing a sharp knife or carving tools, Shave down areas marked for shaving and then slice out the areas of your pumpkin that need to be removed. Try to do smaller, more intricate areas first, and avoid putting too much pressure on thin areas of the pumpkin-- they could snap!

Light it up! Time to fire up your pumpkin and admire your work! Candles are the traditional way to light a pumpkin, but you can also try flameless tealights, fairy lights, special LED pumpkin lights that come in all kinds of

fun colors, and even glow sticks!

**If you do use a candle, make sure it has a nice flat surface to stand upright, and keep your pumpkin a safe distance away from your house or any kind of

flammable decorations.**

Roasted Pumpkin SeedsHere's how to turn your leftover pumpkin guts into a yummy holiday snack!

Using a colander, rinse your seeds under warm water and separate them from pumpkin pulp.

Measure your seeds, and for every 1/2 cup of seeds, measure out 1 Tablespoon of salt and 2 cups of water. Bring salt and water to a boil, then add seeds and lower heat to a simmer for 10 minutes. Drain.

Preheat your oven to 400°F. drizzle a baking sheet with olive oil, add the seeds, and toss them until they are evenly and lightly coated in the oil. Bake on the top rack until the seeds begin to brown, checking every 5 minutes. (Times can vary from 5-20 minutes, depending on seed size.) Add seasoning to taste, and enjoy! You could try smoked paprika, cumin, chili powder, garlic, or even skip the salt and try sugar and pumpkin spice, instead!
