“In every generation one is obligated to see oneself as one who personally went out from Egypt.”

This quote, taken from the Passover Haggadah, tells us the essence of the Jewish intergenerational experience: that

we are to connect with the moments of religious and national significance in Jewish history. In particular, on Passover we connect to the oppression of the Jewish people, and we rekindle the dreams of redemption.

Tragically, there are times when connecting to historical suffering do not require flights of imagination. Rather, we witness hatred and suffering within our own community. I was reminded of this idea as I recently visited the Jewish community of Paris on a solidarity mission following the brutal terror attack on a Friday afternoon at the Hyper Cacher supermarket in the Porte de Vincennes neighborhood of Paris.

Remarkably, in the darkness of this moment, I experienced a great deal of light. I was blessed to connect with many in the Jewish community – to reach out to them in their moments of mourning and to have them share so much with me. I was blessed to connect with some incredibly inspiring French leaders, both religious and lay; I was blessed to reconnect with former members of our Shaar community who now live in Paris; I met some truly extraordinary people.

In the darkness, they extended a hand of hospitality and warmth to me. They reflected one of the great teachings on the plague of darkness that the Almighty cast on Egypt. The verse says, “They saw not one another, neither rose any from his place for three days.” (Exodus 10:23) According to Rabbi Yitzchak Meir Alter (1799-1866, known as the first Gerrer

Rebbe), the description of this plague offers us insight into the darkness. He wrote that the verse presents a cause-and-effect: because they did not see each other, they were unable to rise from their place. The same applies to all of humanity, he taught. If we can’t find a way to see each other, then we’ll never succeed in rising from our places and achieving our lofty goals.

The response to times of darkness, then, must be to reach out to each other. To see and hear one another. We welcome strangers, reach out to the downtrodden, and reconnect with each other – this is where we find the strength to weather the moments of darkness.

Perhaps this idea explains the ha lachma anya declaration that we make at the beginning of the Seder. As we re-experience the suffering of Egypt, we reach out to those unfortunate who might be in need of a meal or of our company. The Jewish response to suffering is to open our doors and embrace those in need – this is how we find the light to lead us out of difficult situations.

Finally, after four years of work, I am pleased to publish the Canadian Haggadah Canadienne. This unique Haggadah, which I edited together with my dear friend Richard Marceau, aims to reflect the essence of the Canadian Jewish experience. It contains commentary of rabbis from across the denominational spectrum and from across Canada; it contains text in both English and French; it contains photographs, texts, and artwork that tell the story of the Canadian Jewish community. I hope you will join me as we launch this exciting new offering.

Abby, Aviya, Ayelet, Annael, and Allegra join me in wishing you a chag kasher v’samei'ach.

As I write this message, it is cold and snowing, but we know that Purim, Passover and Spring are just around the corner. The upcoming holidays are times to celebrate our Jewish survival and offer us hope for a better future. As your President, I am committed to preserving

our Shaar traditions by building on the great work of our past leadership and working to ensure a vibrant future. To that end, I would like to briefly discuss four areas which I have identified as priorities for the next few years: Membership; i3 @ the Shaar; Financial Resource Development (FRD) and building infrastructure repairs.

Membership renewal is critical to our future. A review of our demographics show that 56% of our members are over 65 years of age and 43% are over 70 years of age. It is imperative that we bring in new members - and younger ones in particular. This can be challenging because, even though our Montreal Jewish Community is considered large, our numbers are diminishing. Moreover, many young Jewish people are hesitant to commit to being a member of a synagogue, or any other organization for that matter.

However, we believe that our focus on membership renewal and the efforts of our i3 @ the Shaar Committee will yield results (i3 stands for imagination, innovation and implementation). The committee’s mandate is to expand our

outreach efforts and member involvement opportunities and improve our events and programs. Our goal is to meet and exceed the expectations of members and potential members. The committee is currently interviewing for a critical new hire, Member Engagement and Program Manager, to create, implement and oversee these initiatives.

Financial Resource Development (FRD) is a recently established committee, chaired by Past President Michael Cape. The goal of this committee is to raise $8.5 million. Our aging building is in need of urgent repairs and upgrades, which we estimate will cost $4.5 million. In addition, we hope (subject to availability of funds) to renovate and expand the use of our small Chapel and Cote-Saint-Antoine Lobby, which we estimate will cost $3 million. Our third area of need is to enhance our Jewish life and learning programs. We estimate this will cost $1 million over 5 years. I will keep you posted on all the progress in each of these areas in my future bulletin messages.

Much like the rejuvenation our ancestors experienced many years ago during Purim and Passover, we believe that the efforts of our Officers and Board of Trustees and our dedicated committees will help us further rejuvenate our membership and maintain the vibrancy of our synagogue.

I hope to see many of you at the Shaar as we celebrate together. Susan and I wish you a happy and healthy holiday season.

S Maharat Rachel kohl Finegold, Director of Education and Spiritual Enrichment

As a child, one of my favourite days at summer camp was Topsy-Turvy Day. On that day, we were encouraged to wear our clothes backwards, inside out or mismatched, and to show our silly side. Even the camp meals became topsy-turvy, as breakfast foods were served at

dinner, and our tables in the dining hall were mixed around.

Purim is the day that Jews turn our world topsy-turvy. We let our silliness hang out. But it is more than simply a day of fun. There is spiritual potential in departing from one’s usual routine. It allows us to see ourselves in a new light, even to turn ourselves “inside out” and express parts of us that are usually hidden. The act of wearing a costume does just this. A costume not only changes our outer appearance, but also might express a concealed interest or humourous characteristic that lies dormant inside of us the rest of the year. For example, many adults express their inner child in dressing up on Purim. My daughters revel in the chance to display their inner princesses on that day. However, I’m not sure what all this implies about my wearing a Madonna costume last year...

The custom to drink until tipsy on Purim may also be understood in this light. The Talmud observes: “When wine goes in, secrets come out.” This refers to the fact that when drunk, a person tends to reveal more than usual about himself. While one certainly should not get uncontrollably drunk on Purim, we might get tipsy enough that we feel more comfortable sharing thoughts and feelings that usually stay bottled up inside.

Our Sages teach in Pirkei Avot, “Do not look at the vessel, but rather at what is inside it.” This is a reminder not to make assumptions about someone based on their external appearance, but to get to know what is inside, much like the popular adage not to judge a book by its cover. Purim is the time to express what is inside of us, and to see ourselves and others for who we truly are. This does not necessarily need to be silly, although it can be. Purim can remind us that, once in a while, going a little topsy-turvy might be just what we need.

Purim samei’ach!

“You stand this day, all of you, before the Lord your God…” (Devarim 29:9). A covenantal moment is much too important to be trusted only into the hands of just the leaders and officials. Everyone, even strangers, must be there

to witness and affirm it. The wording suggests an on-going or present tense event. The Torah is not referring to an event that happened once, but rather to an ongoing or recurring event. Timelessness is also alluded to when reciting the Torah blessings – “that has given us (natan) the Torah…” and “that gives (notain) the Torah.”

Judaism is not like any other religion or culture. We don’t just commemorate past events. We celebrate Pesach to remember what happened when we left Egypt. Remembering how we became free is just part of the festival. Judaism suggests to us that the timeline, the calendar, is circular. What does this mean? Every year at different times of the year, we go through the same things. So look at the calendar differently now, with all the months in a circle. Every year we experience the special energies that are associated with that month or time of year. Tisha b’Av is a time when judgment is very severe; it is no wonder that both the first and second temples were destroyed on that day and later on, the beginning of World War II took place on that day and brought about unspeakable destruction to world Jewry.

According to Rabbi Chaviv Danesh, we learn that every month and time of year has a special energy to it. It is for this reason that we are given mitzvot that are time-related: for example, fasting, eating matzah, taking the lulav and etrog.

The mitzvot help us to go with the energy of that month. There are times to be cautious – the three weeks from the 17th of Tammuz to the 9th of Av; there are times to be happy – Purim and the month of Adar; and times to reflect and do teshuva – in the month of Elul.

So, when we celebrate a holiday, we are not just commemorating a past event, we are reliving it and going through its special energy once again. What is the special energy of the month of Nisan and the holiday of Pesach? In the tractate of Rosh Hashanah we read: “In Nisan our forefathers were redeemed from Egypt and in Nisan we will be redeemed.” The special energy of the month of Nisan is being redeemed and coming together as a nation. In our times, this would translate into coming out of exile. So we see that the festival of Pesach is not just a commemoration of what happened over three thousand years ago, rather it is as relevant today as it has ever been; just like all our other holidays that we celebrate.

Pesach takes place on the night of the fifteenth of Nisan. According to Kabbalah, God represents the sun which gives off endless light. We represent the moon which only reflects the light of the sun. On the fifteenth, the moon is full and thus reflects more of the sun’s light than ever. So when we say the blessing of the moon, we say that “let the day come when the moon is as big as the sun” meaning when we will be able to use all that God gives us for the right reason and then reflect it back to the world.

Dear Friends,

I invite you to participate in one of our tradition’s wonderful opportunities to help others.

A number of times on the Jewish calendar, our tradition calls upon us to offer support and help to those in financial need. I am reminded time and time again of this need, as individuals and organizations approach our synagogue for support. The complex life stories, the unfortunate turns in mazal, and the need for legitimate Jewish chesed are parts of the everyday experiences of many in our community.

In this vein, please consider donating to the Congregation Shaar Hashomayim Passover Fund.

With your participation, we are able to help many in our own community experience Passover in a way that provides the warmth, the spirit, and the fulfillment that every Jew deserves, regardless of their financial standing.

Best wishes for a chag kasher v’samei'ach.

Sincerely,Rabbi Adam Scheier

Getting involved in Sisterhood can enhance one's personal and religious growth. Sisterhood provides women of the congregation with a strong sense of Jewish community and with a precious network of friends.

Our Sisterhood is blessed with an incredibly diverse cross section of women: teachers and social workers; artists and accountants; lawyers and health care professionals; mothers and grandmothers; sisters and daughters; all committed in one way or another to the ideals of Tikun Olam.

As president of Sisterhood, my goal is to continue to reach out to our members, to lean in, to listen, to find out what our women need to make their Jewish connections stronger and more spiritually fulfilling. The Shaar is our community.

Mark your calendars! Sisterhood Closing Luncheon on June 17 will feature a special guest comedienne.

REMEMbERIng

The late Neri Bloomfield will be remembered for her Zionism, which – together with her love for her family and community – motivated her leadership on local, national and international levels. Neri was a generous philanthropist and a trailblazer in being the first woman to occupy many of her leadership positions. Neri served on the Shaar Board of Trustees and the Honorary Advisory Council, and Neri and the Bloomfield family were instrumental in jumpstarting innovative programs at Shaar Hashomayim geared towards youth. Neri’s legacy of devotion to our congregation is carried on by her children, Harry and Evelyn, and their families.
