ROBOTICS EVENTS AT LAKEVIEW

Thanks to cont inued and increased support from Lakeview Schools, the Lakeview Robotics program has expanded into more elementary schools for the 2016 school year! There are now three total elementary level robot ics teams with two at Westlake and one at Riverside elementary schools. We hope to expand in the coming years to every elementary school in Lakeview so every student in every school has the opportunity to be involved in FIRST robot ics! We are proud to have on board John Cosby, Jessica Day, and Shelley Szekely!

Event.

During the off-season your Lakeview FIRST Robotics Competition Team 4327, Q Branch Robotics, was able to participate in many outreach activities as well as work on skills through building a promotional robot. We were proud to help at the World's Longest Breakfast Table in June, the Calhoun County Fair in August, Spooky Science at Kingman Museum in October and of course all of the home Lakeview football games with our T-Shirt cannon robot.

In an effort to practice skills which may be used in the forthcoming STEAMworks challenge, we created a practice robot with a mecanum style drivetrain. This style of chassis was one we had never designed or constructed, but the students walked away from the experience having the knowledge and skills necessary to implement this should the design be chosen in the 2017 season (continued on page 4).

LAUNCHING T SHIRTS FOR MAKE-A-WISH FOUNDATION

The Riverside Robotics club constructed a funct ioning robot ic model of

a bee hive with a bee moving from hive to flower and back. Above is a

video of the team turning on their machine for the first t ime. The team

constructed a program using an Apple iPad with software provided by

FIRST. This is the first year for Riverside Robotics and they have

worked from inspirat ion from the challenge to fully funct ioning model!

The skills and inspirat ion inst illed into the students at this level will

carry with them as they progress through the various levels of robot ics

offered in Lakeview Schools!

What a great start to our season! The Lakeview School District embraced our proposal to expand to the entire district and now we have three elementary teams with the potential for one more and one middle school team with the potential for three more!  Our program is now reaching more students than ever before and I could not be more proud.

We have over thirty excited and dedicated students preparing for the STEAMworks FIRST Robotics Competition 2017 season (see clip on next page). They are eager to get ready with the skills and knowledge to tackle whatever challenge FIRST will throw our way.  We are preparing with technical knowledge, engineering practices and practical applications to be referenced come January.

As the coach of the program, I am very proud of what we have done and excited for what the FRC season will bring. We will be hosting the FTC State Championship for the third year in a row and will return to host and compete at our Lakeview FRC District Event.  I am certain we will build upon our 2016 successes for an incredibly 2017 season!

FIRST STEAMworksThe teaser for the 2017 FRC competition was released in September. Our students are very excited for the predicted steam punk theme and are gearing up to see what the game entails on January 7, 2017.

There are lots of ideas floating around the FIRST community about what the game will entail. Watch the preview and see what you think!

FRC Team 4327 participates in Manufacturing Day in the Forst Custer Industrial Park at Rosler Metal Finishing. Students were given an in depth tour of the manufacturing processes in preparing metal products.

Riverside Robotics Club continues to work their way through the Creature Craze Challenge as part of their Robotics club objectives. The purpose of the Creature Craze Challenge is to learn about animals that live in the same habitat. Last month, students learned about honey bees that live on a farm. This month, members learned about another farm creature, the horse. ?The club chose the Belgian horse because it lives in a farm habitat with a bee. For their challenge they have to design a farm habitat with a horse and their bee hive they created in the beginning,? explained Jessica Day, Riverside Robotics Club advisor. Thank you to Terry Day of Day's Pulling Horses for bringing the horses to Riverside Elementary and for talking to students about their habitat.

Additionally, we created a hugging feature on top of the mecanum chassis covered by a large teddy bear using a pneumatic system.  Pneumatics are an extremely useful application in FIRST robotics, but the team has not opted to use them in the past few challenges.  This was a great refresher for the coach and a new experience for the students.

Lakeviw's middle school team 7792 works on programing and CAD skills along side community mentors.

Each year our team seeks community volunteers for the events we are hosting. This year we are hosting events at Lakeview High School on December 17th, 2016 and March 2-4th.

The December event is the State Championship for the First Tech Challenge (FTC) middle school competition. Last year our own Nindroids Team 7792 competed in this event along with other top teams from around the state.

The March event is a Michigan District First Robotics Competition (FRC) and will feature high school teams from around the state. Volunteers for this event can sign up for a single day.

We are in in need of judges and other roles for both competitions. If you or someone you know is interested please create a free account and sign up HERE.

Lakeview host s t he Michigan St at e FTC Cham pionship

Decem ber 19t hLakeview has been selected to host the state championship FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) for the third year in a row. This event draws in about 1,500 participants each year and serves as a fund-raising event for our district teams.

The event is free and open to the public. Community members are welcome to come and see what amazing middle school students are producing. Both the main gym and the axillary gyms are open to the public. The game animation challenge is provided here.
