A YEAR WITH MARY on the Church's journey towards Christ

7 June 1987- 15 August 1988

Given Pope John Paul ll's well-known devotion to Mary, the Church has been expecting, right from the beginning of his pontificate, a document from him on the Blessed Virgin. This expectation was fulfilled on 25 March 1987, the feast of the Annunciation, with his announcement of the celebration of a Marian Year (7 June 1987 - 15 August 1988) and the publication of an Encyclical Letter, Redemptoris Mater, on the Blessed Virgin Mary in the life of the pilgrim Church.

This letter follows his major encyclicals on Christ the Redeemer (Redemptor hominis, 1979), the Father of mercies (Dives in misericordia, 1980), and the Holy Spirit (Dominum et vivificantem, 1986 ), which constitute a sort of «Trilogy on the Trinity.» With Redemptoris Mater, the Holy Father's intention is to offer a thorough presentation of Mary of Nazareth who, because of her singular reltionship with the Blessed Trinity in the history of salvation, is honoured by the Church as the chosen daughter of the Father, the Virgin Mother of the Incarnate Word, the temple of the Holy Spirit.

This encyclical is character:ized throughout by deep and sound doctrinal teaching allied to a pastoral awareness of the signs of the times. Great historical and theological sensitivity connects the different parts of the letter and determines the logical progression of the three parts of which it is composed: Mary's journey of faith from the Incarnation through the entire redemptive work of Christ, as a model, guide and source of strength of the Church's journey in the obedience of faith, especially in these years leading up to the second millenium of the birth of Christ.

The principal sources for the Holy Father's document are the Sacred Scriptures and the documents of the Second Vatican Council, especially the constitutions on the Church, Lumen gentium, on Divine Revelation, Dei verbum, and on the Church in the modern world, Gaudiurn et spes. These are corroborated by numerous references to Tradition, both of the Eastern and of the Western Church.

The CONTENTS are on page 3

The structure of Redemptoris Mater is very similar to that of Chapter VIII of Lumen gentium.

The introduction gives the reasons for the encyclical and the Marian Year and provides the doctrinal basis of Mary's role in the divine plan of salvation.

The first part, under the title: Mary in the Mystery of Christ, is an ample theological reflection on three phrases of Scripture:

1) The title Full of grace (Lk 1, 28), with which the angel greeted Mary. This is interpreted and developed in the Pauline context of the prologue to the Letter to the Ephesians: Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places and who chose us in him before the foundation

AN APOLOGY We ask readers of the English edition of

COSMO to excuse the delay with which this June 1987 issue is reaching them; the translator was away from Rome in the summer months ... however, better late than never.

of the world ... , and is refered to Mary's missio-n in the mystery of the Incarnation and Salvation.

2) Elizabeth's phrase eulogizing Mary: Blessed is ,fJe who believed (Lk 1,45). Starting from these words exalting Mary's attitude of faith in God's revela tion, the encyclical mentions various episodes in the New Testament which illustrate her fai th, pointing out that not only did Mary conceive and give birth to the Word of God first by faith and then physically, but also that the whole life of the Mother of Jesus was a <<pilgrimage>> of faith and in faith.

3) The words of the dying Jesus to the beloved disciple: Behold your Mother On 19,27). Reading these again in their biblical context, the Holy Father indicates them not just as a testament to the filial devotion of Christ but also as a <<testament>> of immense ecclesial value.

The second part bears the title: The Mother of God at the centre of the pilgrim Church, and consists of three sections:

1) The Church, the People of God present in all the nations of the earth. This people, still travelling by faith, <<amid the persecutions of the world and the consolations of God>>, has in the Mother of God a model, guide and source of strength for its own long and difficult pilgrimage. The Mother of God has not only preceded the Church in its journey of faith but also sustains and guides it today on its pilgrimage toward the day of the Lord.

2) The Church's journey and the unity of all Christians. This section shows John Paul II's special sensitivity toward Christin unity. After indicating the main points of agreement between all Christians, he goes on to examine some aspects of Marian doctrine that could form the basis of future ecumenical dialogue.

3) The «Magnificat» of the pilgrim Church. This third section is a reflection on the contemporary relevance of the Magnificat. The encyclical shows how the values enshrined in the Magnificat can become specific points of the Church's commitment to the solution of such problems as the cry of the poor, the rights of the oppressed and the search for justice and peace.

The third part of the encyclical bears the name: Maternal mediation, and consists of three sections:

1) The first, Mary, the Handmaid of the Lord, and the second: 2) Mary in the life of the Church and of every Christian, illustrate, in the light of Sacred Scripture and chapter VIII of Lumen gentium, the Church's teaching on the maternal role of Mary both in serving Christ and his. work of Rede mption and in cooperating in and interceding for the Church and every Christian. The Holy Father cites, word for word, the relevant passages of chapter VIII of Lumen gentium, but, unlike the conciliar document, repeatedly refers to this function as the maternal mediation of Mary, always, however,

2 June 1987

speaking of it in terms which echo the Council's teaching.

3) The third section has the title: The meaning of the Marian Year. The Holy Father here makes clear the scope of this celebration. For the entire Church it should be: * a renewed commitment to study the Council's teaching on Mary, so as to obtain an adequate ap-

Servites and the 1954 Marian Year

Leafing through material preserved in the general archives, we found that the Order promoted a number of interesting events for the 1954 Marian Year:

1. The introduction of the practice of the Marian Saturdays: a service and sermon in honour of Our Lady every Saturday.

2. The introduction of Marian Days: the faithful could ask the friars for a Mass and a service in the even mg.

3. A new format for the Addolorata magazine in Italy and a cheaper subscription rate.

4. The opening of a priory in Germany (Gelsenkirchen/Buer), after an interval of more than 150 years.

5. Two daily broadcasts by Servites on Vatican Radio for the month of May.

6. A television broadcast in Chicago by Fr. James M. Keane.

7. The title of basilca was bestowed on the Servite churches of S. Maria dei Servi in Bologna and the Sanctuary of B.V. della Ghiara in Reggio Emilia.

8. The Prior General asked all young Servites to carry out a series of devotions in honour of Our Lady on Saturdays to ask for a real deepening of the life of the spirit and the grace to live our vocation following the example of Bl. Anthony Pucci. A spiritual bouquet of these devotions was later presented to the Holy Father.

9. The Prior General also asked for the growth in Marian devotions to be fostered particularly in the Missions.

10. Efforts were also made to have the Marianum recognized as a Faculty of Theology; this recognition was finally granted in October 1955. The Faculty also took part in the exhibitions of Marian books and Polish Marian books.

The Prior General published a letter to mark the conclusion of the Marian Year in which he stated that some of these initiatives should coninue to be promoted, especially the Marian Saturdays and the formation of a collection of essential books on Our lady in every community of the Order. (V.B.)

preciation of the Blessed Virgin in the salvific mystery of Christ and the Church; ·~ a more correct theological orientation of the cult of and devotion to God's Mother in the life of the Church; * a journey of faith and prayer with separated Christians, especially those of the oriental Chu~ches who have such great devotion to the Theotokos; * a concrete option for the poor and outcast.

The encyclical ends with a meditative commentary, a paraphrase almost, of the Alma Redemptoris Mater.

3 June 1987

This encyclical shows its relevance and significance to the Church of our age particularly in its treatment of such themes as Mary's journey of faith, ecumenical dialogue on Marian theme~, the fulness of grace and generous service of Mary m the history of salvation and the spiritual life of the Church, as well as in its constant pastoral concern for the Church in the years leading up to the second millenium of the birth of Christ.
