Following a surgical internship at Wake Forest, Doctor Walker moved to the University of Florida where he completed another year of general surgery and subsequently his urology residency. From 1968 to 1970 he served as a Commander in the U.S. Navy and had a teaching appoint- ment at the University of Tennessee. Doctor Walker then returned to the University of Florida and was appointed assistant professor of urology. He was one of the first urol- ogists to subspecialize in pediatric urology, and in 1973 studied in London with D. Innes Williams, founder of pedi- atric urology, following which he devoted his practice to children. Dixon spent his entire academic career at the Uni- versity of Florida, with an appointment as professor of urol- ogy for 25 years. He was also chief of urology from 1998 to 2001. Doctor Walker has been an incredible scholar, having published 121 original manuscripts and 33 book chapters. His primary intellectual interests have included vesi- coureteral reflux and renal functional abnormalities result- ing from urinary tract disorders, but he has written on all of the major topics affecting pediatric urology. He has been a visiting professor at all of the leading children’s hospitals in the United States and established an accredited pediatric urology fellowship. Doctor Walker also has served as president of the Florida Urological Society and was a gover- nor in the American College of Surgeons for 4 years. Perhaps his most important leadership role in pediatric urology was his appointment as editor of the Pediatric Urology Section of The Journal of Urology® in 1992. Before his appointment, pediatric urology articles were grouped near the back of the clinical section, just in front of the case reports. Through the efforts of many in our specialty, pediatric urology was al- lowed to have its own section in The Journal of Urology®, and Dixon was named its first editor. He appointed associate editors and the editorial board with representatives from each AUA section. In recognition of his many contributions, the AUA gave him a Distinguished Service Award in 1999 and the Gold Cane Award in 2003. He is most deserving of the Pediatric Urology Medal. Doctor Walker is now retired from the University of Flor- ida/Shands Hospital but his dedication to pediatric urology continues to be honored. He is a true scholar and diligent worker who is universally respected. Pediatric Urology Medal 0022-5347/06/1764-1700/0 Vol. 176, 1700, October 2006 THE JOURNAL OF UROLOGY ® Printed in U.S.A.
