What is rabies?Rabies is preventable.

Rabies is an infectious viral disease that affects the nervous system.

The disease is usually transmitted from animals to humans by the saliva of a rabid animal, usually from a bite.

Rabies is not curable once a pet contracts it (once pets shows symptoms, they usually die within 10 days).

REMEMBER, the proper and up-to-date vaccination of your pets is your first line of defense against rabies.

Did you know ?State law requires that all

dogs, cats and ferrets maintain a current rabies vaccination!

If you are exposed...If you have been bitten, scratched or exposed to a strange animal’s saliva, keep these things in mind:

The first symptoms of rabies may be nonspecific flu-like signs (malaise, fever and headaches), which may last for days.

Wash the wound right away with soap and water for at least 10 minutes.

Call your doctor or go to a hospital emergency room, depending on the severity of the wound.

Protect yourself AND your pets!

Avoid contact with any strange or dead animals.

REMEMBER, approved rabies vaccines are available for dogs, cats, ferrets and horses.

Be smart!Rabies protection is smart.

Wild animals that live in our neighborhoods can carry rabies. Pets that spend any time outdoors can come in direct contact with the wild animals.

For more than 30 years, the Lexington-Fayette County Health Department and other community organizations have conducted low-cost rabies clinics for pets of Fayette County residents.
