Rachid Abu-Hassan is an experience designer and buildings engineer, a musician and arts enthusiast, and an adamant long-distance runner.

Rachid has close to 18 years of experience in the design and construction industry. He started his career with Shen Milsom & Wilke in 2000 as an Acoustic Consultant in New York City and within 4 years, he transferred to Dubai to develop and lead the Middle East Office. In Dubai, Rachid expanded his expertise into the fields of Audiovisual, Telecommunications, and Building Security Systems Design. By the end of 2007, Rachid returned to New York City to join Arup’s Acoustics, Audiovisual, and Theatre Consulting practice. Shortly after joining Arup, he joined the New York leadership team and later became an active member of Arup’s Consulting Practice which includes, amongst other design disciplines, lighting design, fire engineering, and sustainability.

In the beginning of 2012, Rachid transferred to Arup’s Amsterdam office where he established the Acoustics, Audiovisual, and Theatre Practice. In addition to the Amsterdam team, Rachid also led the European Practice with staff spread across four offices.

In 2014, Rachid was appointed as Amsterdam’s MEP Practice Leader and later took on the l eadership role of Buildings-Consulting. From 2014 until the end of 2017, Rachid was in charge of the restructuring of the Buildings-Consulting team, a team with more than 80 staff members.

Throughout his career, Rachid has managed to combine his passion for the arts with his engineering background by working on a number of high profile arts and culture projects.

Prior to leaving Arup, Rachid completed the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Centre in Athens, a project he enjoyed working on for close to 7 years alongside a multidisciplinary Arup Team, and Renzo Piano Building Workshop.
