High Holy Day Learning OpportunitiesSelichot: Preparing for the Days of Awe

Saturday, September 21, 2019

During the High Holy Day season, we reflect on our relationships, choices, beliefs, and practices, considering where to make repairs, adjustments, and atonement. Using the guidance and insight of Rabbi Debra Robbins’ new book Opening Your Heart with Psalm 27: A Spiritual Practice for the Jewish New Year, as well as a profound musical selection, we will join in a journey of learning and reflection.

Meaningful Disagreements ~ Learning In Our Differences Wednesday evenings at 7:00pmOct. 23, Nov. 20, Dec. 4, Jan. 8

Rabbi Sissy Coran

One fact people across political divides today may still agree upon is that civil discourse between the political divides is turning less and less civil. Indeed, the sheer lack of desire to try to understand those with opposing political opinions (or political identities) and disagree constructively over critical questions is posing an existential threat to democracies around the world. In response, Pardes (a non-denominational yeshiva) has created this new initiative: Mahloket Matters: How to Disagree Constructively– The Beit Midrash Way. The roots of the beit midrash (Traditional House of Jewish Learning) culture may be found in the ancient rabbinic legend that tells how Moses received a Torah full of ambiguities that needed to be interpreted in contradictory ways known as the 49 vs 49. This methodology of studying text can be used to increase the desire and ability to understand and engage more constructively with conflicting political opinions today, thereby improving civil discourse.

and the Values They Teach Us.Wednesday evenings 7:00 - 8:30pmFeb. 12 and 26, Mar. 4 and 18

Rabbi Jonathan Hecht, PhDDean, Cincinnati campus, Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion

In Judaism, the stories of the Bible are a source of inspiration, yet many of us know them merely as quaint children’s stories. These stories can hardly inspire us until we know how much depth and meaning each of them possess. In this class, we will explore the stories of the Book of Genesis and plumb their depths together. You will never see these stories the same way again… Guaranteed!

Adult Education SeriesRockdale Book Club

Usually Tuesdays, 7:00pm - 9:00pmOther dates and books to be determined by the group

Facilitated by Rockdale Librarian, Karen Zanger

This growing group of men and women chooses and reads a Jewish fiction or non-fiction book (alternating) about every six weeks. Join us for discussion around the very large and friendly table up in the Rockdale library. This group is for folks who like having a little structure and company around reading interesting Jewish books. It’s also for getting to know other Rockdale book lovers lots better!

The fall kickoff book is Yossi Klein HaLevi’s Letters to My Palestinian Neighbor, the paperback 2nd edition with Palestinian responses. Conversations about this “community read” will happen at Rockdale as well as all around the city leading up to the author’s appearance October 29. Rockdale Book Club will gather to discuss it on date.

We choose our next book at each successive meet-up instead of far in advance, so that we’re free to entertain whims and new books. If enough copies of a book, we choose to read together are not available from libraries, and if covering purchase cost would be difficult for a group member, the purchase can be reimbursed through a generous “In the Beginning” grant from the Women of Rockdale. Contact person for the Book Club is Karen Zanger. Write to her at [email protected] or call her at 513-919-1271.

Global Day of Jewish Learning: Words Matter

Mayerson Jewish Community Center

Sunday, Nov. 17 at 1:00 - 4:30pm

From ancient arguments to modern meanings, from raising our voices to remaining silent, the words have power.

Words can create. Words can harm or heal. Words can explain, or they can obscure. Even our silences speak volumes. Cincinnati’s Global Day of Jewish learning will feature leading thinkers, scholars and rabbis. Together, with input from participants, we will spend the afternoon exploring Jewish wisdom and the way our words influence our thoughts and our world. Global Day of Jewish Learning is a designated day on the calendar where Jewish communities across the globe study a shared theme from a variety of perspectives rooted in Jewish texts.
