Special topic: Ramadan Ramadan this year is going to fall during the summer months which means we will have 17-18 hours of fasting; this lack of water coupled with the summer heat can take its toll on the skin. Our skin needs to stay hydrated and moisturised in order to stay plump, healthy and balanced. Water plays an important part in the up keep of the skins health mechanisms. Water helps detoxify the skin, helping it to clear congestion, regenerate cells, and hydrate the skin giving the skin a youthful appearance. It also helps keep the skin feeling smooth. Have a look at the two diagrams; you will be able to see the difference between the two skin types. As you can see in the diagram of the dry skin, the surface layers of the skin become thin, dull and cracked, dry skin also accentuates wrinkles and fine lines in the skin. As we won’t be able to drink water during the day time we should do our best to drink enough water during the night, It is recommended that we drink 6-8 glasses (1.5-2.0litres) a day. This may sound like a lot of water however when broken down into many smaller half size glasses we can easily achieve this, try taking a bottle of water to bed with you! Externally we can keep our skin hydrated by using hydrating facial mists, or floral waters, these are typically made with water and sometimes have other moisturising ingredients added to further benefit the skin. Using these types of products help keep you feeling refreshed and cool in the summer heat!
