Recitation and revision of Surah al Baqarah

Tafseer Ayah 202 Tuesday, February 24 2015 | 1:25 PM (Malay Peninsula Standard Time)

The Quran is an everlasting miracle – the more you fill your heart with the Quran, the more

Allah grants purity of your heart . Subhanallah. And you will get the happiness which you can

only get from Kalamullah – and not from anywhere else . That is why Allah explains the

Miracle of the Quran . Regarding the virtues of the Quran , we refer to an example: about the

doa from the Hadith which has a connection with the Quran – doa Al Hamni (distress) wa Al

Gham.

Invocations in times of worry and grief

120. Allaahumma 'innee 'abduka, ibnu 'abdika, ibnu 'amatika, naasiyatee biyadika, maadhin fiyya hukmuka, 'adlun fiyya qadhaa'uka, 'as'aluka bikulli ismin huwa laka, sammayta bihi nafsaka, 'aw 'anzaltahu fee kitaabika, 'aw 'allamtahu 'ahadan min khalqika, 'awista'tharta bihi fee 'ilmil-ghaybi 'indaka, 'an

taj'alal-Qur'aana rabee'a qalbee, wa noora sadree, wa jalaa'a huznee, wa thahaaba hammee .

O Allah, I am Your slave and the son of Your male slave and the son of your female slave . My forehead is in Your Hand (i.e. you have control over me) . Your Judgment upon me is assured and Your Decree concerning me is just . I ask You by every Name that You have named Yourself with , revealed in Your Book , taught any one of Your creation or kept unto Yourself in the knowledge of the unseen that is with You , to make the Qur'an the spring of my heart, and the light of my chest, the banisher of my sadness and the reliever of my distress.

Reference: Ahmad 1/391, and Al-Albani graded it authentic.

Al Ham is ‘concern’ meaning I have a ‘worry - for the future’ .

Al Gham refers to ‘grieve - about the past’.

We are in the middle between Al Ham wa Al Gham .

In Al Ham wa Al Gham, after we make Tawassul Waseelah ila Allah by His Names &

Attributes , what is the Names in the doa ?

“ Allah humma ij’al Quran al Adziima rabee’a qalbi

Wa Nuura Sadree wa Jalaa-a huznii wa dzaHaaba hammee”

This is a miracle of the Quran – just think “ O Allah make the Quran ( the spring of my

heart) . When we have a a concerned about something in our life, we say this doa & Allah will make the

Quran ( the spring of my heart) because Quran gives us the light. We have grief &

worry because our heart is hardened when it is dry from Kalamullah. Instead of figuring the different

ways to overcome our worry & grief, we must realise that :

actually there is no release from grief & worry unless WE RETURN TO THE QURAN.

So we make the Quran the Spring of our heart,

the ( the Light of our chest ) ,

( the banisher of my sadness)

( the reliever of my sadness )

Rasulullah salallahu alaihi wa salam promised that Allah will replace our grief & worries with

happiness if we say the above doa. We are happy , free from worry & grief, because we are feeding

our heart with the right food.

Ya Rabbi,

This is the miracle of the Quran – you ask Allah to “ make the Qur'an the spring of my heart, and the light of my chest, the banisher of my sadness and the reliever of my distress. “ and Allah will fulfil your doa.

سورة البقرة

ا كذكركم ءاباءڪم أو أشد ذڪر سكڪم فٱذڪروا ٱلل ـ ن فإذا قضيتم منا ءاتنا فى نيا وما له فمن ٱلناس من يقول رب ق ٱلد ـ ۥ فى ٱلخرة من خل

ن ومنهم( ٢٠٠) نا يقول م ءا رب وفى ٱلخرة حسنة

نيا حسنة تنا فى ٱلدار ) ٮ ك ( ٢٠١وقنا عذاب ٱلن ـ ا نصيب لهم أول م كسبوا م سريع وٱلل

( ۞ ٢٠٢) ٱلحساب

Surah Al-Baqarah

So when you have accomplished your Manasik remember Allâh as you remember your

forefathers or with a far more remembrance. But of mankind there are some who say: "Our

Lord! Give us (Your Bounties) in this world!" and for such there will be no portion in the

Hereafter. (200) And of them there are some who say: "Our Lord! Give us in this world that

which is good and in the Hereafter that which is good, and save us from the torment of the

Fire!" (201) For them there will be alloted a share for what they have earned. And Allâh is

Swift at reckoning. (202)

Ayat 200, 201 and 202 shows the people’s condition –

(i) those who want Duniya will doa for Duniya only "Our Lord! Give us (Your Bounties) in this world!" , to which Allah will fulfil.

(ii) And those who want the goodness of Duniya & Akhirah : "Our Lord! Give us in this world that which is good and in the Hereafter that which is good, and save us from the torment of the Fire!" and Allah will Fulfil.

(iii) For them there will be alloted a share for what they have earned. And Allâh is Swift at reckoning.

We refer to Surat ul Noor , Ayat 39.

سورة النور

ى إذا مـ ان ماء حتلهم كسراب بقيعة يحسبه ٱلظ ـ وٱلذين ڪفروا أعم

عنده جاءه ا ووجد ٱلل سريع ۥ ۥ فوفٮه حسابه ۥ لم يجده شيـ وٱلل

(٣٩)ٱلحساب Surah Al-Noor

As for those who disbelieve, their deeds are like a mirage in a desert. The thirsty one

thinks it to be water, until he comes up to it, he finds it to be nothing, but he finds Allâh

with him, Who will pay him his due (Hell). And Allâh is Swift in taking account.[] (39)

Like Ayat 2/202. this Ayat 24/39 also has :

سريع ٱلحساب ۥ (.And Allâh is Swift in taking account ) وٱلل

Allah is quick in Accounting whatever you do in your life. In Surat ul Noor, Allah is swift in taking

account . This Ayat سريع ٱلحساب is mentioned in Surat ul Noor where Allah refers to the وٱلل

deeds of the Kaafirin / disbelievers. They do good deeds but these a’mal / deeds are based on kufr,

not iman. In Surat ul Noor, Noor of Allah is in the heart of the believer like the light ; so a’mal of the

believers are based on faith, like the light. Versus a’mal of the disbelievers whose deeds are not based

on faith.

A’mal based on al ikhlas . Al Ikhlas tareeq un Khalas / Sincerity gives us freedom from slavery ,

freedom from the ‘chain’ which we are putting around ourselves because we are servants of Allah .

This is ikhlas . I need to be the servant of Allah and not servants of money or people.

Their a’mal has no ikhlas because they are kaafirin. This is true for those whose a’mal / deeds is not

based on ikhlas but based on desires, praise, etc. Allah resembles their deeds as a MIRAGE – a virtual

concept. They may be tired from doing these deeds but these deeds are only like a mirage in the

desert at a time when a person is very thirsty . He needs a drink badly from that ‘lake’ but it is only a

mirage – unreal. So he thinks his a’mal ( deeds in this world) will save him, but in the Akhirat, he will

run & run but his a’mal are just a mirage which cannot save him.

Anyone who does any ‘amal with no ikhlas (that is to do any deeds NOT for the sake of Allah only) ,

then they will only be a mirage – of not benefit to him in the Day of Judgment . For ikhlas is tareequn

khalas – ikhlas is a freedom from slavery , freedom from being chained .

So my concern is only with Allah, we are afraid only of Allah , we want to please only Allah – this is al

ikhlas needed for everything in life . Al Ikhlas is a way out of problems. So always remember that if we

have a problem, there is chain. And the only way to be khalaas ie free from the chain, which is Tareeq

ul Ikhlas. Check our sincerity if we have problem at home or at work. Check why we come to class – be

truthful with ourselves .

Al Ikhlas Tareeq Ul Khalaas

Always remind ourselves of our SINCERITY : “ Ya Rabb, I do this for YOUR SAKE & for no other reason“.

When we really do for Allah, nothing can discourage us.

Surah 24/38 :

لهم كسراب بقيعة يحسبه ـ ى إذا وٱلذين ڪفروا أعم مـ ان ماء حتٱلظ

ا جاءه ... ۥ لم يجده شيـ

A’mal salehah ( Good righteous deeds like reading Quran ) will go to our bank account in the

Hereafter. This account will help us in OUR TIMES OF NEED – even in the Duniya . If we go

through anything , the permit from our bank account assures us safety.

But for a person who does not do a deed based on faith and on ikhlas, then all his (insincere)

a’mal will not be of any use for him to help him out of his difficulty. Some scholars said that if

we have a guarantee that Allah Accepts our 2 raka’at prayer, this will be sufficient for us all

through our whole lives.

Even little ikhlas deeds may have great benefits – we do not know the result of our deeds , so

we must struggle with our ikhlas. Allah will never leave us without purification. With ikhlas,

we get so much purification. Allah want us to realise whether we are doing our deeds

sincerely for Allah or not. eg to be a sincere mother or as a wife, we will receive tests from

them ( children & spouse) . Allah wants us to realise that we do deeds for our children or

spouse for Allah’s sake – not for our children’s or spouse’s sake.

Allah wants the Our deeds in whatever we do in this life to be pure & sincere ; so Allah will

Test and put problems in them. This is a Purification & Allah want khaalas . We want sincerity

in our deeds so that they are not a mirage .

Allah want everything to be sincere and especially for Him – this is true especially the

KNOWLEDGE . Even if someone starts going to classes with no ikhlas at the beginning, Allah

will Test them for the purpose of Purification so that they will end up with ikhlas in seeking

this Knowledge which Allah want to preserve. Nobody deserve to be a servant except to

Allah. La ilaha illa Allah.

Al Ikhlas Tareeq ul Khalas – that is why Allah said in Surah An Noor / 39 means

سريع ٱلحساب ۥ فوفٮه حسابه (٣٩)وٱلل( Allah) Who will pay him his due (Hell). And Allâh is Swift in taking account.[] (39)

وفٮه means in full . You will get ( the accounting) for whatever you did.

Ikhlas is hidden – it is in our heart . But do not ever think Allah is unaware of what is in our

heart. Allah Look ONLY at our heart . Alhamdulillah it is only Allah who is Looking at our heart

& not people – otherwise people will not be close to each other . The content of the heart

may scare people away. Out of Allah’s Blessings, He Conceals our sins – Allah make it our qalb

which ONLY Allah can See it. Oone else can see it & no one will judge us.

Only Allah can See our heart , so make our heart ONLY FOR ALLAH

Only this is required of us – to do all only with ikhlas for Allah ONLY . Al Ikhlas Tareeq ul

Khalas . This is end of Ayat 202.

In Ayat 2/203, …

And remember Allâh during the appointed Days.[] But whosoever hastens to leave in two days,

there is no sin on him and whosoever stays on, there is no sin on him, if his aim is to do good

and obey Allâh (fear Him), and know that you will surely be gathered unto Him. (203)

… We go back to the topic of Haj . We had done all the points on Haj and we ended on the

doa which we also say in Haj :

وقنا عذاب ٱلنار وفى ٱلخرة حسنة

نيا حسنة نا ءاتنا فى ٱلد (٢/٢٠١)رب

"Our Lord! Give us in this world that which is good and in the Hereafter that which is good, and

save us from the torment of the Fire!" (2/201)

… From any doa we say this and we say this from Maqam Ibrahim till Hajar Aswad . A very

important doa.

Ayat 203 is regarding when we are ready to go home . From Minna , we went to Arafah , then

to Muzdalifah . Then Tawaf or back to Minna . Then there are the 3 days – Ayyam ul

Tashreeq. We have Yaum ul Naha ( 10) & Yaum ul Eid . And then we have Ayyam ul Tashreeq

( 11-13). Some people will do the Haj quickly & leave but some people stay till the end . Max

is 11, 12 & 13 and they leave after the finish with the Jamarat .

Ayat 203 is regarding going home after we had ended/finished all .

عدودٲت وٱذكروا ٱلل ام م ل فى يومين فل إثم فى أي فمن تعجر فل إثم عليه قى عليه ومن تأخ وٱعلموا أنڪم لمن ٱت قوا ٱلل وٱت

(٢٠٣إليه تحشرون )And remember Allâh during the appointed Days.[] But whosoever hastens to leave in two days,

there is no sin on him and whosoever stays on, there is no sin on him, if his aim is to do good

and obey Allâh (fear Him), and know that you will surely be gathered unto Him. (203)

… After the doa, Allah says :

عدودٲت ام م فى أي وٱذكروا ٱلل

And remember Allâh during the appointed Days.[]

There is so many Ayat telling us to remember Allah . Allah wants us to / ذكروا ٱلل

remember Him because Allah want to Remember us . Allah Prescribe all ibadah for the

purpose of remembering Allah. Any ibadah and the details in each ibadah , are prescribed for

.remembrance Allah because this is the way to survive in this life / ذكروا ٱلل

Ibadah is to remember Allah

Dzikr Allah is the way to survive in life

Hadith of Rasulullah salallahu alaihi wa salam between a person who remembers Allah & one

who does not ( in meaning) :

A person who remembers Allah is the LIVING person – the one who is truly happy, motivated,

with genuine wellbeing. The person who does not remember Allah will be attached to

people, status, wealth and these people will be depressed.

So our concern is primarily Allah : I wake in the morning and I think of Allah . When I sleep at

night, the last thing I think of is Allah . We will be happy this way .

Dzikr of Allah is a Purification of the Heart from all sickness

This is the remembrance of Allah is a general capacity not legislated specifically;

Specific Remembrance of Allah

This is the remembrance of Allah that is specifically legislated with an ibadah eg Haj, Fasting,

Solat

When there is Dzikr Allah , the is SHUKR

We always need check ourselves regarding Dzikr Allah because we can only thank Allah and

have gratitude ONLY with Dzikr Allah . We must remember Allah in ANY situation – and not to

remember people who do things to us – just remember Allah’s Action.

When we see the Light pertaining to Allah’s Action, we will be very happy.

We will be very depressed when we see the light pertaining to people’s action. Dzikr Allah is

jalaa*ul qulub ( purification of the heart) – that is why in Haj , Allah prescribes Dzikr Allah 4

times. Subhanallah.

ر فل إثم عليه قى عليه ومن تأخ وٱعلموا أنڪم لمن ٱت قوا ٱلل وٱت (٢٠٣تحشرون )إليه

And remember Allâh during the appointed Days.[] But whosoever hastens to leave in two days,

there is no sin on him and whosoever stays on, there is no sin on him, if his aim is to do good

and obey Allâh (fear Him), and know that you will surely be gathered unto Him. (203)

عدودٲت ام م during the appointed Days” : The specific days , Ayyam ul“ / فى أي

Tashreeq are DzulHijjah 11, 12 & 13.

There are 2 types of Dzikr Allah :

(i) Absolute Dzikr

This is General Dzikr Allah when you remember Allah ALL the time ie while you are sleeping,

while lying down, while walking – Allah is always in your mind

(ii) Dzikr Allah which is restricted with time

This is Dzikr Allah specific to time. Eg Ayyam ul Tashreeq – Allah Commands us to remember

Allah specifically during this time period. Dzikr Allah mentioned here is where every ibadah

you do will make you be close to Allah .

3 types of Dzikr :

/ qaul - bi al lisan - verbal ,

/ qalb - in the heart

/ jawaarih – limbs

/ Al Dzikr yashmal kul ma yutaqarrabbi ila Allah – ie Al

Dzikr Allah ( remembrance of Allah) is anything that we do to be close to Allah . Anything that

Allah Prescribe us to do & anything we do to draw us close to Allah is Dzikr Allah .

Examples of Dzikr Allah : – all that we do in our heart ,our limbs, and verbally is

remembrance of Allah .

/ As Solat ul mafruudhah wa al nawafil – obligatory &

nawafil prayers ,

Umrah & Haj

Sacrifice,

/ rami al jamraat is done to be close to Allah,

/ At Tawaf - the doa, the actions , etc are all dzikr

/ As Sa’i

/ Al Takbiir

/ Doa

We are looking at the BIGGER PICTURE . All the ibadah COMBINED are ALL Dzikr Allah . So

Allah Said Remember Allah generally all the time & specifically on the 11th, 12th & 13th

عدودٲت وٱذكروا ٱلل ام م (٢٠٣) ... فى أيAnd remember Allâh during the appointed Days ( 11th, 12th & 13th)… (Ayat 2/203)

Hadith Rasulullah salallahu alaihi wa salam (in meaning) : Allah made the Tawaf, Sai, Rami

Jamarat, to establish remembering Allah. ( All these ibadahs are very establish. )

Another Hadith Rasulullah salallahu alaihi wa salam (in meaning) : Ayyam ul Tashreeq

(DzulHijjah 11, 12 & 13) counting. These are days of

eating & drinking – no fast

Dzikr Allah.

That is the eating & drinking are for the body & the Dzikr Allah is for the heart & soul.

Subhanallah. Dzikr Allah is nourishment for the soul which we cannot get from any type of

food. Nabi salallahu alaihi wa salam said not to overload our stomach with too much food

because with full stomach, there will be no place for remembering Allah. We get tired. So we

eat, drink & sleep in moderation; so that everything else will be good .

ل فمن ... ر فل إثم عليه فى يومين تعج قى فل إثم عليه ومن تأخ لمن ٱت وٱعلموا أنڪم إليه تحشرون ) قوا ٱلل (٢٠٣وٱت

… But whosoever hastens to leave in two days, there is no sin on him and whosoever stays on,

there is no sin on him, if his aim is to do good and obey Allâh (fear Him), and know that you

will surely be gathered unto Him. (203)

There are 2 possibilities to end the ibadah in Ayat 2/203 :

A. ل فى يومين But whosoever hastens to leave in two days / فمن تعج

ل ,means ‘to finish in a hurry’ . He does 11th & 12th only. If he wants to go home earlier تعج

he can go home on the 12th . Unfortunately , many people people want to ل ie rush home تعج

on the 12th . Allah says : there is no sin for those who return after the 11th & 12th :

ل فى يومين فل إثم عليه فمن تعجBut whosoever hastens to leave in two days, there is no sin on him

ل .He goes home on the 12th before he complete day 13th – تعج

B. ر whosoever stays on till the end ie Day 13th ومن تأخ

ر means ‘ to remain’. He completes the whole ibadah by doing 11th, 12th & 13th before تأخ

leaving to go home.

Yaum ul Eid : Dzul Hijjah 10 – no one will leave on Eid day

Yaum ul Tashreeq : Dzulhijjah 11, 12, 13 . The complete ending is day

13th.

So if I want to go home earlier, I can go home on the 12th . If I want to go home later, I will

go back on the 13th. There is no sin either way.

ل فمن ... ر فل إثم عليه فى يومين تعج فل إثم عليه ومن تأخ… But whosoever hastens to leave in two days, there is no sin on him and whosoever stays on,

there is no sin on him,…

Then Allah continues the Ayat :

قى لمن ٱت

… if his aim is to do good

This لمن ٱتقى is a condition . لمن ٱتقى refers to whomever having taqwa for good.

Meaning Iw ant to finish earlier and go home - there is no sin to do this. But we must consider

the TAQWA why we want to terminate early – because of desire to just to go home only ? or

because of taqwa to Allah truly. Eg we delay our solat because of desire ? or because we try

our best and this is delayed time is the best time to solat .

We may ر ل delay or / تأخ earlier an ibadah – both are not a sin . But is it because of / تعج

our desire ? We may come to class early or late – either way it is not a sin – but it is because

of taqwa ? or desire ? Some people solat before time or after the time – because they are

lazy (desire). Some do the ibadah quickly just to finish it – a desire. Always check our taqwa.

Allah allows it to be made early or late SO THAT IT IS EASY FOR US - not because of desire.

TAQWA IS A REQUIREMENT FOR THE ر ل delay or / تأخ earlier / تعج

OF THE IBADAH . ر is the best because we complete the ibadah but we must have تأخ

taqwa . ل is OK too as long as there is taqwa تعج

/ QAYYADA

Names of Allah AL MU-AKHKHIR / The Delayer and AL MUQADDIM / The Expediter – Allah

will Bring Forward and Allah Delays something but Allah is Perfect . Humans have the choice

to ر ل delay or / تأخ earlier but we need taqwa. In Surah Baqarah, Allah mentions / تعج

taqwa numerous times.

Taqwa goes in every small detail in our lives. Eg When there SICKNESS IN THE HEART, eg

hasad, ria, jealousy, etc :

“Patching” is needed – When someone has hasad, do ‘patching’ . Meaning DO NOT

not react with action

Then do “Stitches”

And do “good deeds”

And “make doa “ for the person.

So if we have any sins / sicknesses in the heart , have taqwa – ie do not react with our desire.

Allah Knows . Taqwa is a cover . A patch. We do not show. Then we do good deeds Allah

Forgive you. We cover / do not show the sickness in the heart . Taqwa is essential in all

relationship ( DO NOT REACT WITH OUR FAULTS) & in ibadah. The Decree makes us show our

fault . Allah Knows what we are. So have TAQWA >> Patch = do not react with our faults /

desire . >>

Do not look ate people’s Tests – they may react more than another . This is his test . A

nurturing for him . We do not look down at people undergoing. And we do not look up at our

Test . All have Tests – all should deal with our faults and focus on taqwa.

The ‘injuries’ ( meaning our sickness in the heart) should help us ( to know our weakness) –

instead we often follow our desire & react . We should have taqwa – then Patch n do good

deeds . This is LIBAS AT TAQWA . That way our heart is good in front of Allah – our heart will

not have holes , not torn . We cannot remove our sickness of the heart BUT WE DO TAQWA .

This is to put a hijab / a barrier over our sick heart . Just close the ‘ illness’ & turn to Allah : “

Ya Allah, You know I am having this problem. Heal me of this sickness of my heart” . Protect

our secret ( sickness in our heart). This patching will be a beautiful LIBAS and our heart will

look good in front of Allah . The way our LIBAS look in front of people is NOT important –

because some people may like but some may not . Only the LIBAS of our heart in front of

Allah is our concern.

LIBAS AT TAQWA DZALIKA KHAIR – Garment of Taqwa . This is good.

That is why Adam & Hawa were immediately naked when they sinned. Now it is not sin that

make us dress less – but actually the heart can be exposed in front of Allah . All our ibadah

must be because of Allah and NOT because of desire.

Taqwa is :

1. Like a LIBAS/dress – make you beautiful in front of Allah & covers your sins from the

people

2. A provision – needed all through our life to continue our journey to Allah

We cannot survive without Taqwa – because without taqwa, we will always (negatively) react

to our faults. But we will not blame ourselves! Instead we will always blame others !

Surat ul Hujurat 49/13 :

ا وقباٮ ل لتعارفوا كم شعوب ـ ن ذكر وأنثى وجعلن كم م ـ ا خلقن ہا ٱلناس إن أي ـ ي

عليم خبير )١٣( أتقٮكم إن ٱلل إن أڪرمكم عند ٱللO mankind! We have created you from a male and a female, and made you into nations and tribes, that

you may know one another. Verily, the most honourable of you with Allâh is that (believer) who has At-

Taqwa [i.e. he is one of the Muttaqûn (pious - see V.2:2). Verily, Allâh is All-Knowing, All-Aware. (13)

Different peoples can create desires . All of us are created from Adam & Hawa – no one is

better than the other. We are made from different peoples to ل لتعارفوا / learn from

each other.

أتقٮكم The more honorable amongst us are the one whose heart has إن أڪرمكم عند ٱلل

more taqwa .
