Asyouinvestigatevariousreplicationsolutions,younoticethatwitheachapproachtoreplication,synchronousorasynchronous,severalkeyareasmustbeunderstood.EMCtypicallyreferstotheseasthepainpointsofremotereplication.Theyare: Theimpactonresponsetimeofyourproductionapplication.Forexample,witharemotesynchronoussolution,
yourapplicationmustwaitfortheacknowledgementfromtheremotesystembeforeproceedingwiththenextdependentwrite.Youalsohavespeedoflightissues,whichimpactthemaximumdistanceyourlocationscanbefromeachother.

EMCRecoverPointisanenterprisescalesolutiondesignedtoprotectapplicationdataonheterogeneousSANattachedserversandstoragearrays.RecoverPoint providesmanyfeaturesthatmakeitauniqueandtestedsolutionforbackupandrecovery.RecoverPointallowsfortheaccessofapointintimeimage,eitherlocallyoratanothersite,whilestillperformingreplication.Theabilitytoaccessdatafromacopyallowsfortestingwithoutsacrificingprotection.Thisfeaturealsoisintegratedwithvariousapplications,suchasExchange,SQL,andVMware.Thisallowsforapplicationdrivenpointintimecopies.RecoverPointalsocanbeusedwithVMAXsSRDFfeaturetocreateadditionalprotection.Pointintimecopiescanbecreatedforeachwrite,ortheusercanchoosetheamountofdatalagthatcanbetoleratedforan application.Thisoptionisconfigurableforeachgroupofvolumes,andcanbeeditedatanytime.

Therightremotereplicationsolutioncanlimityourexposuretoplannedandunplanneddowntime,enablingnonstopoperation.Perhapsyoualsoneedtoprovideyourorganizationwithefficientdatareplicationtomeetcorporateorgovernmentalstandards,whilestillmeetingyourtotalcostofownershiprequirements.Inaddition,youneedaflexiblesolutionthatchangesasyourneedschange.Nomatterwhatyourchallengeis,thereisoneunderlyingtheme:dataprotectionandfasterbusinessrestartintheeventofadisasterorunplannedoutagearecriticalacrosstheorganization.Usingreplicationsoftwaretomaintainacompletecopyofthedatainaremotelocationallowsforbusinesscontinuityandincreasedfunctionality.Whendisasterrecoveryisrequired,remotereplicationsoftwareandremoteclustersensurethatallyourmissioncriticalinformationhasbeencaptured.Usingreplicasratherthantapemeansyoucanbeupandrunninginhoursasopposedtodays.Inaddition,thesecondclustercanbeusedforapplicationtestingandremotebackups.Replicationenablesnonstopoperationwithfullaccesstotheproductiondataandthereplicas.

RecoverPointprovidesmanyfeaturesandbenefitsthatbuild onpreviousRecoverPointversions.The multiplesitesfeatureallowsyoutokeepuptofourindividuallyjournaled copiesofyourproductiondata,enablinggreaterdataprotection, increasedaccesstodifferentpointintime(PIT)copies,andawiderrangeofDR,testing,andbackuptopologies.AndwithsynchronousreplicationoverIP,oneoftheseremotecopiescanbeasynchronouscopywithouttheneedforremotefibreconnectivity.Theintroduction ofvRPAs relievestheneedforphysicalRPAs.TheintroductionofUnisphereforRecoverPointallowsforconsistentmanagementinterfacesandmethodologiesacrossEMCtechnologies.TheRecoverPointRESTAPIinterfaceenablescustomscriptingandapplicationsviastandardRESTfulprotocols.ImprovedintegrationwithVMwareSiteRecoveryManager(SRM)allowsfortestingandfailovertoanypointintimecopy.IntegrationofRecoverPointlocalreplicationandSRDFallowsforlocaljournalcopiesinconjunctionwithremoteSRDFcopies.Thisenablesaccesstolocalanypointintimecopies,whilestillmaintainingSRDFfunctionality.CompleteFIPS1402complianceensuresthattheRecoverPointenvironmentissecure.Otherperformanceandscalabilityenhancements,suchas400MB/sreplicationforasynchronousdistributedconsistencygroups,enableevenmoreefficiencywiththesamephysicalconfiguration.

RecoverPointgivesyouachoiceofthephysicallocationofthecopiesoftheproductiondata. Localcopiesforoperationalrecoveryorremotefordisasterrecovery.WithRecoverPoint4.0andabove,recoverablecopiescanexistinmultiplephysicallocationssimultaneously.RecoverPointisintegratedwithallofEMCsblockstorage,including VMAX(10K/20K/40K),VPLEX,VNXseriesandtheVblock 300/700.WhenusingtheVPLEXwritesplitter,whichcomesinstalledintheVPLEXGeosynchrony code,RecoverPointsupportsnonEMCstorage.

TheRecoverPointAppliance(RPA) isthedataprotectioncontrollerforRecoverPoint.RPAnodesutilizeprivateLANandsharedRPAvolumesforcommunicationsusingstandardTCPprotocol.NoFC/IPconvertersareneededtoreplicateacrosstheWAN.ThesetofRPAsateachclusterconstitutesanRPAcluster,whereeachclustercanincludebetweenoneandeightRPAs,assetduringRecoverPointsysteminstallation.Theclustersizemustbethesameatallclustersinaninstallation.Innormaloperation,allRPAsinaclusterareactiveallofthetime.Consequently,ifoneoftheRPAsinaclustergoesdown,theRecoverPointsystemsupportsimmediateswitchoverofthefunctionsofthatboxtoanotherRPAinthecluster.Generation5RPAsperformhardwarestatusnotifications.IfaharddriveorpowersupplyontheRecoverPointappliancefails,ahardwareeventnotificationwillberaisedinthesystemlogs.Ifconfigured,theeventwillalsocreateacallhomeevent,sendingasystemrequesttoEMCCustomerService.
