Film at the OAC....

The OAC Film Series’ first season has concluded with two

successful documentary films. Last October we presented

Race to Nowhere in cooperation with Roger’s Memorial

Hospital. The evocative film focused on the educational

issues facing students and parents in the future. Patron response

was excellent, both to the conversations that ensued and by the panelists

remarks immediately following the viewing.

In support of autism awareness month this April the OAC presents The Red Kite

Project based on the Chicago Children’s Theater Company and their ground-

breaking work in creating inter-active theater for autistic children. It’s exciting to

note that this project will be available in southeast Wisconsin as the renowned

professional theater, First Stage Children’s Theater of Milwaukee, will soon be

offering a similar program in the near future. FSCT is an artistic partner of the

Oconomowoc Arts Center.

2012-13 Season...

Under consideration for next season are several documentary films

including Remembering Frederic: the Life of Chopin, a new documentary created

by former OHS grad and concert pianist Pamela Howland and featuring award-

winning actress Rosemary Harris. In addition, The Bonsai People:The Vision of

Muhammad Yunis, is another documentary based on the work of Nobel Peace

Prize winner, Muhammad Yunis.

Kerry Shaw Brown Director, Producer, WriterAs a former Creative Director with Campbell-Ewald, Kerry Shaw

Brown has a wide-ranging creative background which includes writing, art direction and production design, music production, and, of course, directing. His gift for highly-visual storytelling – which lends itself both to dramatic and comedic spots – is complemented by his eye for lighting, compositing and post effects.

Brown has directed commercials for Chevy Trucks, Taco Bell, Honda, TiVo, Suzuki, Dodge, General Motors, Kawasaki, Mattel, eRealty, and Ford. He won a 2001 Emmy Award for his PSA, “Fetch,” created for the nonprofit organization Adopt-A-Pet. As an agency creative, he has garnered multiple Caddy, Telly, and Mobius awards, was a finalist in the London International Advertising Awards, and been honored at SXSW and the Austin Music Awards. A decade on the agency side schooled Brown in the nuances of brand development and automotive advertising.

All along, his eye was on directing, he says, “because it was the only creative position that would allow me to bring together my artistic skills, my writing, my experience in creative direction, and my love of film.”

Brown’s decision to direct can also be traced to two pivotal experiences: while at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh (an unlikely but popular institution among Hollywoodites), he was one of nine students chosen to attend a month-long seminar on film, which gave him a chance to spend quality time with the likes of Frank Capra, John Badham, Saul Bass, Ray Bradbury, and others. At 14, he was inspired to

resuscitate a friend’s ailing goldfish using a nine volt battery.

Sam, the goldfish, lived another 23 hours before running out of juice, and Brown learned to make critical decisions under pressure. “Ultimately, I would like to be known as a director of beautifully executed visuals and epic stories,” says Brown.

“Every now and then it’s important to complement a crowd-pleasing action film with an intimate portrayal of someone bringing a beloved pet back to life.” Brown recently completed spot projects for Acura, Bright House Networks, Victory Motorcycles, Suzuki, and Polaris. Brown’s recent credits include “The UnDetectables,” a mini-series he developed and directed for the Discovery Channel. He is developing a number of branded content projects with his brother, acclaimed TV and film writer Kristofor Brown, thanks to whom he was the subject of several “Beavis and Butthead” episodes.

David RenchSpecial Ed Teacher, Agassiz Elementary SchoolDavid Rench is a special education teacher who has

been working with special needs students for over fifteen years. He currently teaches children on the autism spectrum at Agassiz Elementary School in Chicago, Illinois, the same school where he taught during the filming of The Red Kite documentary. For the past eleven years at Agassiz, Mr. Rench has been using drama in his classroom to teach his students how to better read the emotions of others and better express their own. He has had the pleasure of working with Jacqui Russell for the past eleven years in the classroom as a teaching artist, as a consulting educator for Camp Red

Kite’s summer camp and as one of the three teachers who have taught other special educators how to bring drama into their classroom during the Polk summer workshop. He is very excited to be a part of this special screening of The Red Kite Project film.

Wendy HalloranDirector of Education, Genesse Lake SchoolWendy Halloran has been serving the educational

needs of the disability community for more than thirty years in a variety of capacities. She has served as a teacher, administrator, educational consultant and now as the Director of Education of Genesee Lake School at O.D.T.C. Ms.

Halloran is licensed as a regular and special education teacher, a principal, a superintendent of schools and a director of special education. Her Master’s Degree was awarded in the area of Early Childhood, Special Education. She has also taught special education courses at the university level.

Prior to assuming the position of Director of Education at Genesee Lake School, Wendy operated her own special education consulting business, The Learning Curve of Wisconsin, Inc. In this capacity she provided specialized services to students, families and school districts. Ms.Halloran’s vast experiences in meeting the special education needs of the disability community make her uniquely qualified to serve as the Director of Education at Genesee Lake School.

Jennifer AdamsHeadmaster of Theatre Academy Special Needs, First Stage Children’s Theatre

Jennifer Adams is the headmaster of Theatre Academy Special Needs programming at First Stage. She holds an MFA in Theatre for Young Audiences from the University of Central Florida and has taught theatre and dance across the southeast and overseas for over 10 years. At First Stage she is also the Academy Director for all K4-4th grade programs.

“First Stage Academy’s mission of teaching life skills through stage skills has changed the lives of children all over southeastern Wisconsin, we hope that this program will broaden our reach to even more young people.”

Terry Kaldhusdal ModeratorTerry Kaldhusdal is well known for his recent documentary film, Consider the

Conversation, which debuted at the OAC in February of 2011. His previous work includes Thinking Like a Historian, for the Wisconsin State Historical

Society, and America’s Kings and Queens, The Gilded Age in Middle America, which will be shown on Milwaukee Public Television in the near future.The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel has written that Kaldhusdal’s work is “clear and concise” and added that he has a “passion for learning and a talent for communicating.” Columnist Laurel Walker has called his work “A-plus” and stated that he has “a knack for documenting history.”

In 1991, Terry joined his wife as a classroom teacher and moved from Southern California to Wisconsin. He currently teaches fourth grade at Magee Elementary School in Genesee Depot. His students have created documentaries that include the history of the Kettle Moraine School District and personal digital stories on everything from responsibility to the three branches of government. In 2009, one of Terry’s students was featured at the AHA Film Festival in Southern Illinois.

Terry has traveled across his state and across the country as a speaker to improve our educational system. He was honored in 2006 with the Kohl Fellowship Award, and in 2007 as the Wisconsin State Teacher of the Year. Terry resides in Oconomowoc, Wisconsin with his wife, Janet, and their three children.
