    Artifact: Individual Child Project

Professional Standard 2 - Human Development and Learning

The competent teacher understands how individuals grow, develop, and learn and provideslearning opportunities that support the intellectual, social, and personal development of all

    students.

2A. understands how students construct knowledge, acquire skills, and develop habits of

    mind.

2B. understands that students' physical, social, emotional, ethical, and cognitive

    development influences learning.

2E. understands how to include student development factors when making instructional

    decisions.

2F. knows the impact of cognitive, emotional, physical, and sensory disabilities on learning

    and communication processes.

2G. analyzes individual and group performance in order to design instruction that meetslearners current needs in the cognitive, social, emotional, ethical, and physical domains at

    the appropriate level of development.

    1. Fully state the standard in bold text. Then write a paragraph explaining your knowledge andunderstanding of the standardput the standard into your own words.

This standard is about how I, as a teacher will seek to understand how each individual student

grows, develops and learns. I will get to know the student including their strengths, weaknesses,

family background, educational background, and learning interest. I will do my best to

understand how the students learn most efficiently, and how they develop new skills. I will take

measures necessary to understand the students physical, social, emotional, ethical, and cognitive

development as it pertains to the ways that they learn in and out of the classroom. I will establish

an understanding of any learning, or behavioral disabilities that they may have, and will

collaborate with the student as well as parents to discover the best ways to accommodate for their

needs in lessons being prepared in class. I will observe and analyze the student as they work

both individually and in groups to discover strengths and weaknesses, and to differentiate

instruction for the student based on those.

    2. Explain how the artifact you chose demonstrates your understanding and application of thestandard.

With this Individual Child Project, I sought out one in my class to study. I knew that the student

had a learning disability with reading and writing and needed specific attention and

accommodations in order to keep up with and level the playing field for him with the rest of the

class. Knowing this, I interviewed the student, observed the student, reviewed his work and test

scores so that I could better understand his strengths and weaknesses. Based on what I knew of

the students interests, background knowledge, strengths, and areas of growth, I developed

specific lesson plans for the students development. Since the student is in 6th

    grade reading at a

    3rd

grade reading level, these interventions will help to develop the students reading

comprehension and writing abilities. This artifact, helped me to learn the importance of meeting

this standard in my classroom so that I can know how to best provide for the varying needs of

my students, and to develop the areas in need of growth.

    3. A If the artifact has been used in your practice, reflect on how your teaching will change inthe future to further meet the standard.

B If the artifact has not been used in your practice, i.e., a class assignment, reflect upon how

your teaching will be impacted by the assignment.

The study actually did take place in my practice. I observed and interviewed the student. I

spoke to the students teachers to view student work, and to discuss test scores. I also talked

with the students special education teacher to learn what goals were in place for the students

growth. Doing this helped me to better understand how important it is to really get to know my

students. I could better meet the standard by finding ways to incorporate the individual growth

lessons into the everyday classroom rather than by taking the student out and working with him

individually. The lessons that I had created, however, were not used in practice. But applying

these lessons, and developing them for the student who needs that extra help will help me, as a

teacher in my future classroom, to do my best to understand all of my students and to provide for

    their individual needs.

    4.

Conclude with a paragraph discussing how you are more prepared to Teach and Learn in aDiverse Society as a result of satisfactorily meeting the standard.

Completing the project and meeting the standard helped in preparing me to teach and learn in a

diverse society because the diversity ranges in more areas than just race, but in ability level and

special needs as well. If I am teaching in a classroom that has a wide range of ability levels and

academic needs, then I will know how to best get to know my students and differentiate my

instruction for the benefit of the students personal learning. I feel more prepared to teach in a

diverse society, because I understand what is expected of me as a teacher as far as seeking to

meet the needs of each specific student. Diversity within a classroom no longer intimidates me

because I feel like I am better prepared to learn how to meet an array of varying student needs.
