Doordarshan has a three-tier program service: 1. National2. Regional3. Local.

Regional Language Satellite Channel (11) : DD North-East, DD Bengali, DD Gujarati, DD Kannada, DD Kashir, Dd Malayalam, Dd Sahyadri, DD Oriya, DD Punjabi, DD Podhigai, and DD Saptagiri.

Regional State Network (11) : Bihar, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Uttrakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Rajasthan, Mizoram and Tripura.

Programming

Program sourcing:

Programs for different channels of Doordarshan are sourced from:In-house production : Programs produced by Doordarshan professionals utilizing Doordarshan infrastructure, including coverage of events 'live' by Doordarshan.

Commissioned programs : Programs produced by persons of proven merit with funds provided by Doordarshan.

Sponsored programs : Privately produced programs telecast by Doordarshan on payment of a fee in exchange for Free Commercial Time.

Royalty programs : Programs acquired by Doordarshan from outside producers on payment of royalty for single or multiple telecasts.

Acquired Programs : Programs/events acquired from foreign companies on payment of rights fee.

Educational/Development programs : Educational and Development programs produced by different agencies of the Government.

Self Financed Commissioning : The initial production cost of these programs is met by the private producer. Doordarshan reimburses the production cost to the producer after commencement of telecast. The program is marketed by Doordarshan. The scheme also has provisions for payment of bonus on approved production cost on attainment of high TRPs, and for reduction of production cost in case of poor performance of program.

Regional Language Satellite Service

The eleven regional Language Satellite Services are:

→ DD-Malayalam→ DD-Saptagiri (Telugu)→ DD-Bengali→ DD-Chandana (Kannada)→ DD-Oriya → DD-Sahyadri (Marathi)→ DD-Gujarati → DD-Kashir (Kashmiri)→ DD-Punjabi → DD-North-East→ DD-Podhigai (Tamil)

The Regional Language Satellite Services and Regional State Networks broadcast a wide spectrum of programs covering developmental news, serials, documentaries, news and current affairs programs to communicate with the and film programs as other major genres are also telecast.

Regional State Network: The Regional State networks cater to the people living in Hindi Belt comprising U.P., Bihar, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, M.P. Rajasthan, Haryana and H.P. The programmes of this service are produced and broadcast from the capital Kendras of the respective states between 3.00 and 8.00 pm and are relayed by all the ground transmitters of the state.

Regional LeadersDoordarshan televises programs in Hindi and associate Official languages

It launched a number of Regional Language Satellite Channels (DD - 4 to DD - 11 and DD - 13) and telecast programs in Assamese, Bengali, Gujarati, Malayalam, Marathi, Kannada, Telugu, Kashmiri, Oriya and Tamil.

Private Regional Channels

► Private regional channels have followed the path of the Big brother (i.e. Doordarshan). They are neither completely entertainment channel nor exclusively news channel. They are following the middle path and claiming themselves an infotainment channels

► The private channels televise through the state dominant languages

► Rising advertising revenues and increasing numbers of viewers have provided the impetus for many big players to enter into the business

►ETV, Sun TV, Asia net have a strong grip over the regional market.

►Zee television has three regional channels; Zee Marathi, Zee Punjabi and Zee Bangla

►ETV Network is a part of the well-established Ramoji Group, has created 12 dedicated infotainment regional channels. ETV network is the source of rich entertainment of eight different languages. Those are: Telugu, Bangla, Marathi, Kannada, Oriya, Gujarati, Urdu; and Hindi to viewers in Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Bihar and Madhya Pradesh

►Now national news channels cannot confine its boundary to national level. They cannot ignore the regional news because of the stiff competition form the regional cannels

►Regional news channels are entering into the competition with a strong will power and also with an aim to portrait regional issues in national and international level

►In this competitive market, channels are targeting specific viewers

►With increased consumer preference for news programmers, television news channels have grown faster than other niche channels
