Timeline• Born in Leiden on

July 15, 1606• Entered University of

Leiden in 1620 at age 14

• So accomplished by age 22 that he began taking pupils

• Moved to Amsterdam in 1631

• Married in 1634• 4 children between

1635-41, but only 1 survived

• Wife died in 1642• Rembrandt passes

away on October 4, 1669

“The Anatomy Lecture of Dr. Nicholas Tulp”

• Painted in 1632• Oil on Canvas• Used light to draw

attention to the body and faces of the observers

• Painted in 1654• Oil on canvas• The light is

specifically illuminating her body while the rest of the painting remains dark

• Painted in 1636• Depicts the biblical

Samson being stabbed in the eyes

• Light is drawn to only the body of Samson

• Most popular Flemish painter of the 17th century

• Used lots of light and energy to accentuate subjects

• Believed that “fat is beautiful”

1598, by age 21• Arrived in Venice in

1600• Made many vast,

decorated schemes in the 1620’s

• Passed away May 30, 1640

• Painted in 1608• Oil on canvas• Light is used very

minimally, but does help to bring out the face.

• Painted in 1609• Oil on panel• Light is drawing

attention to the body and the faces of the women, while the background remains mostly black

“Hercules Drunk, Being Led Away by a Nymph and a Satyr”

• Painted in 1611• Oil on wood• Light draws attention

mainly to the women, but also to Hercules.
