The following information applies to both the vehicle's front and rear seat belts.

    - No adjustments may be made to the original component parts of the restraint system (belts, seats and theirmountings). For special applications (e.g. fitting child seats) contact your RENAULT Dealer.

    - Do not use devices which give any slack in the belts (e.g. clothes pegs, clips, etc.): a seat belt which is worn too looselyrisks causing injury in the event of an accident.

    - Never wear the shoulder strap under the arm or behind the back.

    - Never use the same belt for more than one person and never hold a baby or child on your lap with your seat beltaround them.

    - The belt should never be twisted.

    - Seat belts should be replaced after a serious accident. Likewise, replace your seat belts as soon as they show any signsof wear.

    - When refitting the rear seats, take care that the seat belts are correctly positioned so that they can be used correctly.

    - If necessary, readjust the position and tightness of the belt.

    - Make sure that the tongue is inserted into the appropriate buckle.

METHODS OF RESTRAINT IN ADDITION TO THE FRONT SEAT BELTSThese are:- buckle pretensioners,- lap strap pretensioners,- chest force limiters,- driver and passenger front

    airbags.

These systems are designed to actindependently or together when thevehicle is subjected to a frontalimpact.Depending on the force of theimpact the system may activate:- seat belt locking,- the buckle pretensioner (which is

triggered to take up the seat beltplay),

    - the lap belt pretensioner to keepthe occupant in their seat, the lowvolume front airbag and the forcelimiters,

    - the large volume front airbag.

PretensionersThe pretensioners hold the seat beltagainst the body, holding theoccupant more securely against theseat, thus increasing the seat belt'sefficiency. In the event of a severe frontalimpact and if the ignition isswitched on, the system may engagethe following depending on theforce of the impact:- piston 1 which instantly retracts

the seat belt;- piston 2 on the front seats.

    - After an accident, havethe entire restraintsystem checked

    - No operation whatsoever ispermitted on any part of thesystem (pretensioners, airbags, computers, wiring) and thesystem components must not bereused on any other vehicle, evenif identical.

    - To avoid premature triggering ofthe system which may causeinjury, only qualified RENAULTNetwork personnel may work onthe pretensioner and airbagsystem.

    - Testing of the electric triggersystem may only be carried outby a specially trained technicianusing special equipment.

    - When the vehicle is scrapped, contact your RENAULT Dealerfor disposal of the pretensionerand airbag gas generators.

METHODS OF RESTRAINT IN ADDITION TO THE FRONT SEAT BELTS (continued)Force limiterAbove a certain severity of impact, this mechanism is used to limit theforce of the belt against the body sothat it is at an acceptable level.

Driver and passenger airbagsFitted to the driver and passengerside. The presence of this equipment isindicated by the word Airbag onthe steering wheel and thedashboard (airbag zone A) and alabel on the lower part of thewindscreen or on the sun visor. Each airbag system consists of:- an airbag and gas generator fitted

on the steering wheel for thedriver and in the dashboard for thefront passenger,

    - an intelligent computer for bothsystems, which includes animpact sensor and a monitorcontrolling the electrical triggersystem for the gas generator.

    - A single warning light onthe instrument panel.

The airbag system is based onprinciples of pyrotechnics. Thisexplains why, when the airbaginflates, it will generate heat, produce smoke (this does not meanthat a fire is about to start) andmake a noise upon detonation. In asituation where an airbag isrequired, it will inflateimmediately and this may causesome minor, superficial grazing tothe skin or other problems.

METHODS OF RESTRAINT IN ADDITION TO THE FRONT SEAT BELTS (continued)

OperationThis system is only operationalwhen the ignition is switched on.In a severe frontal impact, theairbags inflate rapidly, cushioningthe impact of the driver's head andchest against the steering wheel andthe front passenger's head againstthe dashboard. The airbags thendeflate immediately so that thepassengers are not in any wayhindered from leaving the vehicle.

Special feature of the frontairbagThe front airbag has two inflationvolumes and includes an internalventilation system to prevent burnswhich could be caused by escapinggases:- small volume airbag, this is the

first stage of operation,- large volume airbag, the airbag

seams rip so that a larger volumeof gas is released into the bag (forthe most severe impacts).

Deployment of the airbag ismodified according to the severityof the impact and the position of thedriver's seat on its runners.

    Operating faults

When the ignition is switched on,

warning light 1 lights up on

the instrument panel, then goes outafter a few seconds. If it does not light up when theignition is switched on, or comes onwhen the engine is running, there isa fault in the system.Consult your RENAULT Dealer assoon as possible. Your protectionwill be reduced until this fault isrectified.

METHODS OF RESTRAINT IN ADDITION TO THE FRONT SEAT BELTS (continued)All of the warnings below are given so that the airbag is not obstructed in any way when it is inflated and also to preventthe risk of serious injuries caused by items which may be dislodged when the airbag inflates.

Warnings concerning the drivers airbag- Do not modify the steering wheel or the steering wheel cushion.- Do not cover the steering wheel cushion.

    - Do not attach any objects (badge, logo, clock, telephone holder, etc.) to the steering wheel cushion.- The steering wheel must not be removed (except by qualified personnel from the RENAULT Network).- When driving, do not sit too close to the steering wheel. Sit with your arms slightly bent (see the information on

Adjusting your driving position in Section 1). This will allow sufficient space for the airbag to deploy correctly and befully effective.

Warnings concerning the passenger airbag- Do not attach or glue any objects (badge, clock, telephone holder, etc.) to the dashboard in the proximity of the airbag

housing.- Nothing should be placed between the dashboard and the passenger (pet, umbrella, walking stick, parcels, etc.).- The passenger must not put his or her feet on the dashboard or seat as there is a risk that serious injuries may be

sustained. As a general rule, keep all parts of your body (knees, hands, head, etc.) well away from the dashboard.- The passenger airbags should be reactivated as soon as the child seat is removed, to ensure the protection of the front

passenger in the event of an impact.

A REAR-FACING CHILD/BABY SEAT MUST NOT BE FITTED TO THE FRONT PASSENGER SEAT UNLESS THEADDITIONAL RESTRAINT SYSTEMS, I.E. THE PASSENGER AIRBAG, ARE DEACTIVATED.(Refer to the information on Deactivation of passenger airbags in Section 1).

MEANS OF RESTRAINT IN ADDITION TO THE REAR SEAT BELTSDepending on the vehicle, theseinclude:- seat belt pretensioners integrated

into the inertia reels (for the rearsecond row seats)

    - Force limiter.

These systems are designed to actindependently or together when thevehicle is subjected to a frontalimpact. There are two possibilities, depending on the force of theimpact:- protection is provided by the belt

only,- the pretensioner is triggered to

take up the slack in the seat beltand the airbag inflates to cushionthe impact.

Rear seat belt pretensionersThis system is only operationalwhen the ignition is switched on.If the vehicle is subjected to a severefrontal impact, a device retracts theseat belt, pulling the seat belt tightagainst the body and thusimproving its effectiveness.

    - After an accident, havethe entire restraint systemchecked

    - No operation whatsoever ispermitted on any part of thesystem (pretensioners, airbags, computers, wiring) and thesystem components must not bereused on any other vehicle, evenif identical.

SIDE PROTECTION DEVICESSide airbagsThis airbag is fitted to each of thefront seats and is inflated at thesides of the seats (door side) toprotect the occupants in the event ofa severe side impact.

Curtain airbagsThese are airbags fitted along thesides of the vehicle in the ceilingwhich trigger along the front andrear side windows to protect thepassengers in case of a severe sideimpact.

A marking on the windscreeninforms you of the presence ofadditional means of restraint(airbags, pretensioners, etc.) inthe passenger compartment.

Warnings concerning the side airbag- Fitting seat covers: seats equipped with an airbag require covers

specifically designed for your vehicle. Contact your RENAULTDealer to find out if these covers may be purchased from RENAULT

outlets. The use of any covers other than those designed for your vehicle(and including those designed for another vehicle) may affect the operationof the airbags and reduce your protection.

    - Do not place any accessories, objects or even pets between the seatback, thedoor and the internal fittings. Do not cover the seatback with any itemssuch as clothes or accessories. This may prevent the airbag from operatingcorrectly or cause injury when the airbag is deployed.

    - No work or modification whatsoever may be carried out on the seat orinternal fittings, except by qualified RENAULT Network personnel.

    - These airbags operate through slits in the front seatbacks (door side): neverinsert any objects in these slits.

ADDITIONAL MEANS OF RESTRAINTAll the warnings below are given so that, if the airbag is activated, it is not obstructed in any way and also to prevent therisk of serious injuries caused by items which may be dislodged when the airbag inflates.

The airbag is designed to complement the action of the seat belt. Both the airbags and seat belts are integral partsof the same protection system. It is therefore essential to wear a seat belt at all times. If seat belts are not worn, the occupants are exposed to the risk of serious injury in the event of an accident. It may also increase the risk ofminor superficial injuries occurring when the airbag is deployed, although such minor injuries are always

possible with airbags. If the vehicle should overturn or suffer a rear impact, however severe, the pretensioners and airbags are not alwaystriggered. Shocks to the underbody of the vehicle, from pavements, potholes, stones etc. can all trigger these systems.

    - No work or modification whatsoever may be carried out on any part of the airbag system (airbags, pretensioners, computer, wiring harness, etc.), except by qualified RENAULT Network personnel.

    - To ensure that the system is in good working order and to avoid accidental triggering of the system which may causeinjury, only qualified RENAULT Network personnel may work on the airbag system.

    - As a safety precaution, have the airbag system checked if your vehicle has been involved in an accident, or is stolen orbroken into.

    - When selling or lending the vehicle, inform the user of these points and hand over this handbook with the vehicle.

    - When scrapping your vehicle, contact your RENAULT Dealer for disposal of the gas generator(s).

CHILD SAFETYIn all countries there are regulationsgoverning the use of restraints forchildren and babies. In Europe children under 10 yearsof age(1) must be seated in anapproved safety device which issuitable for the weight and size ofthe child. The driver is responsible forensuring that this equipment isused correctly.Child restraints for which typeapproval was obtained after January1992 offer a level of safety muchgreater than for restraints with typeapproval before that date.It is therefore advisable to select achild restraint that complies withEuropean regulation ECE 44.Restraints that comply with thislegislation must be marked with anorange label bearing the letter Efollowed by a number (whichstands for the country where it istype approved) and the year inwhich the type approval wasgranted.Refer to the Child safety equipmentbooklet available from the RenaultNetwork to choose the seat suited toyour child and recommended foryour vehicle.

Remember that a collision at31 mph (50 km/h) is the same asfalling a distance of 10 metres.Expressed in other terms, transporting a child without arestraint is the equivalent ofallowing him or her to play on afourth-floor balcony withoutrailings.

Under no circumstancesshould babies or childrenbe allowed to travel sittingon the knees of another

passenger in the vehicle. If a frontal impact occurs at 30 mph(50 km/h) a child weighing 30 kgwill be transformed into a missileequivalent to one tonne: you willfind it impossible to hold the child, even if you yourself are wearing abelt. It is particularly dangerous to putthe belt round your child when heor she is sitting on your lap. Neveruse the belt for more than oneperson at the same time.

Some passenger seats are notsuitable for the installation of childseats. To find the authorised seats andtypes of child seats that can beinstalled in each of the authorisedseats, refer to the table in thefollowing pages.

Before installing a child seat in thefront seat (if installation ispermitted)If fitted to the passenger seat, carryout the following adjustments:- move the passenger seat as far

back as possible,- set the seatback to its fully upright

position,- raise the seat squab as far as

possible,- raise the headrest to its highest

setting,- move the seat belt height control

    to the low position.

    (1) You must always comply with thelaws of the country in which you aretravelling. They may be different tothe guidelines in this handbook.

CHILD SAFETY (continued)The right choiceThe safety of your children is alsoyour responsibility. To ensure that your child has themaximum possible protection, werecommend that you use seatsapproved by the RENAULTNetwork. It is preferable to use an ISOFIX seat ifyour vehicle is fitted with an ISOFIXsystem (refer to ISOFIX child seatfitting system in Section 1).Restraint systems for all the categoriesare available. These systems havebeen developed in consultation withthe manufacturers and have beentested in RENAULT vehicles.Contact your RENAULT Dealer andask him to help you install it.

Categories 0 and 0+ (from 0 to13 kg)A child's neck is very susceptible toinjury up to the age of two. It ispreferable to put your child into arear facing enclosing shell seat. Thisposition enhances safety.

Category 1 (from 9 to 18 kg)Between the ages of 2 and 4, achild's pelvis is not fully developed.Restraints using the vehicle'sthree-point belts are not adequateand there is also a risk that the childwill sustain abdominal injuries inthe event of a frontal impact. It istherefore fitting to use an enclosingseat for maintaining the child bymeans of a harness or shockabsorbing pad.To avoid any risk to your safety, we recommend that you use

RENAULT approved accessories because they are suitable for yourvehicle and are the only accessories for which RENAULT willprovide a warranty.

    CHILD SAFETY (continued)

Category 2 (15 to 25 kg) andcategory 3 (22 to 36 kg)For correctly maintaining the pelvisof a child under 10 years, a heightunder 1.36 m and a weight of lessthan 36 kg, preferably use a raisedseat with belt guides that ensurethat the three-point belt goes flatover the child's thighs.

A booster seat with aheight-adjustable seatback and abelt guide are recommended as thiswill allow the belt to be worn asclose to the base of the neck aspossible but not on it.Place the headrest in the topposition to allow you to press theseatback of the child seat firmlyagainst the vehicle seatback.Vehicles with integrated child headrestraint: refer to the informationunder Child head restraints inSection 3.If a booster seat without a seatbackis used, the vehicle's headrest willhave to be adjusted to suit thechild's stature; the upper edge of theheadrest must be at the same heightas the top of the child's head andshould never be lower than in linewith the child's eyes.

    The standard classifies childrestraints in five categories:Category 0 : 0 to 10 kgCategory 0+: 0 to 13 kgCategory 1 : 9 to 18 kgCategory 2 : 15 to 25 kgCategory 3 : 22 to 36 kg
