ITCO Report 1/17/08 2
Executive Summary A. Activities
1. In Spring 2007 the committee compiled an inventory of electronic technologies used in teaching and learning in every campus building in which these technologies are located. The committee has organized the data gathered to date by building and unit.
2. Building on the inventory of electronic technologies, the committee surveyed all academic and
academic support departments as to how each department obtains support for the technologies used in teaching and learning. The committee has identified a variety of support needs:
a. a shortage of instructional technology support personnel (that is, employees with support
duties stated explicitly in their job descriptions), especially in departments making extensive use of technology in teaching and learning, with Nursing, ILCS, and VCD being examples of this need,
b. a need for mechanisms that make it easier for departments and units to obtain specialized, or customized support,
c. a critical need for the institution to have centralized software purchasing administration, d. a need to develop, publicize and implement a rationale for how decisions are made to
allocate resources for buying, managing and maintaining instructional technologies.
3. An independent inventory of computers available to students, conducted by ITS, shows that more student computers are held in “closed” departmental labs than are available in open labs across campus. This finding underscores the need for department- or unit- based support.
4. The committee drafted a replacement for the Teaching and Learning with Technology brochure
developed in 2004, which attempted to bring together in one place essential information about using instructional technologies for new faculty. The new guide to teaching and learning technologies (TLT) would be a web-based “index” formatted as questions (FAQs) that faculty and staff most frequently ask. The links in the index would take users to the information, which already exists on the IPFW web site. An item such as a flash drive or memo holder with the URL printed on it would be given to potential users to remind them of the URL.
5. The committee also compiled a listing of technology committees and their charges, and is
considering ways to help the campus community utilize these committees to enhance the use of technology in teaching and learning.
B. Recommendations
1. ITCO should continue to adding to the inventory. 2. Best practices for setting up and supporting instructional technology at the departmental, college and
school level should be developed and disseminated. 3. Ways to maximize the use of existing communication assets and channels to better inform faculty,
staff, and students about the wealth of instructional resources available should be actively explored. The compilation of the inventory, the FAQs, and the list of various technology committees are examples of this exploration. The committee will continue to work on this project.
4. The creation and implementation of customized Service Level Agreements between ITS and departments, schools, programs or colleges for technology support should be examined as one way to make it possible for these units to receive customized technology support.
5. The Director of Purchasing should be encouraged to assign software purchasing to one person or unit and set up a system that can track purchasing and maintenance agreements across the institution.
C. Resources needed ITCO requests $3000 to purchase imprinted items (approximately 1000-1200), such as memo holders or post-its to implement the TLT FAQ & reminder proposal.

How to read the Instructional Technologies Inventory
1. Inventory pages are organized first by Building and second, by Department. 2. Where no information is provided, work continues. “None” means that research has been completed
and no information found. 3. The Inventory is organized in the categories listed below, unless noted.

*Notes: In view of the labs seen with mobile computers and projectors in them, there appears to be a need for the specialized labs to have installed teacher workstations with projection.
ET 107 and 131 also have chalkboards in them which create dust which can harm the installed systems.
ET 137 Center for Industrial Innovation and Design. VCD teacher has been asking for funding for his students to be able to use the prototyper.
In ET 143 Teachers use own laptops but need floater because they do not have a network cable and wireless does not work in this room. One teacher brings his own speakers—no way to easily hook up with room speakers. Cart and projector were still in the room the next day, no class going on.
ET 145 has huge old 3 gun projector.
ET 307 A ceiling projector was removed, but a cart and mobile projector were in use.

Two faculty regularly use mobile computers in the rehearsal rooms. Resch says that there is one mobile computer-projector set-up kept in the Music Building.

*Bruce Arnold, Associate Professor, states “The AV kiosks are fully wired and connected to controls in the front of the rooms. There just was never any equipment purchased to go in the kiosks to actually use. As a result, the AV kiosks either sit empty or have been turned into storage cabinets for extraneous material.”
Bruce stated some needs for the 4 Biology lab rooms: document cameras, computer and projector, SMART board. “The 4 labs are used continually, SB303. SB309, SB369, and SB3677. SB303 and 309 are used for mainstream biology courses and SB369 and SB377 are used predominantly for anatomy and physiology courses for nursing students (over 20 sections per week). Doug Ritchhart spends half of his life running computers and projectors in and out of these rooms. If we had permanent equipment available in these 4 rooms it would greatly increase the instructional capability of our facilities. Jeff Nowak regularly uses room SB303 for his education classes and is familiar with the situation. The Biology department also has an additional laboratory room in SB367 which is used for microbiology, but this room is a little unique and it can still be served by portable equipment.” John Fitzgerald reports cart deliveries to the above-mentioned labs in Fall 2007 - SB 303 - 21, SB 309 - 35, SB 369 - 96, SB 377 - 0 For Biology, the labs represent “standard teaching areas”, according to Bruce.

Proposal for a Teaching and Learning Technologies FAQ web site with reminder item
ITCO Report 1/17/08 49
Proposal for a Teaching and Learning Technology Support “TLT FAQ site” with “reminder” item
Audience for the web site (in order of perceived interest and need) • Faculty: full, part-time, new and old • Those who support faculty in their teaching mission (LSPs and secretaries) • Helpdesk (easy and comprehensive reference) • CELT and other resource providers; any entity supporting teaching and learning • Information Desk Web site location and design • CELT is willing to host the site in its drive space. • The design will use the IPFW template which has a left-hand, expandable menu, with two layers of
organization. This should provide enough of a hierarchy for the proposed organization. Reminder item • Faculty and staff will receive a useful item for their offices, imprinted with the URL of the TLT FAQ Organization of Technology for Teaching and Learning at IPFW web site Global comments • Each question will be linked to an existing web resource; no new content need be created • Some links to content will be included in several categories (Example: How do I get a Blackboard Vista
account? Might be listed in two categories, or How do I report my grades. How do I find out which copyright laws apply to the materials that I use in my course?)
• Four main categories o Getting Connected o Teaching o Advising o Student Support
