Peter Freun1rny gran;g;her/ zrs born in 1825 in the village of Goldbach, in Ashafenberg, Bavaria, Germany, about 30 miles from Lake Constance and the Swiss border.

He was educated in the common schools of his country. Until 21 years of age, he farmed with his father and then enlisted in the army of Bavaria for 6 years.

In 1853 he emigrated to America, sailing on the "Ferriere" from Havre, France, docking in New York on June 4. He arrived in Davenport with 25 cents in his pocket. He worked as a farm hand and in 1854 he married Margaret Krause ol Bavaria.

After purchasing 80 acres in Pleasant Valley Township at the southwest corner of Middle Road and Devil' s Glen Road,

then purchased 309 acres on Middle Road. The farm was on the east side of Duck Creek adjacent to where Wachter School was located.

The family of Peter Freund consisted of six boys and two girls. They were George K. Wachter Freund, John Adam, Ignatz, Albert, joseph, Edward, Frances, and Catherine. A nephew, john Baptist Freund, lived across Middle Road. Mrs . Eldon (Jack) Freund and Richard Freund still live on Middle Road on part of the original Peter Freund farm. Eldon's and Richard's father was Edward, youngest son of Peter Freund.

Grandfather Peter Freund died in 1897. Margaret Krause Freund died in 1898.

John Adam Freund was born in 1862 and married Anna Dorothea Rogge who was born in 1868. They had seven children, four boys and three girls. They were Eleanora (Nora), Harry, Peter, Fred, Lorenz, Rose, and Julia (Sister Mary jean).

The john Adam Freund family lived on a 240 acre farm between Devil's Glen Road and the road west of it from which there was an access road to the home and farm buildings. Part of the farm was along Duck Creek and 40 acres were south of Duck Creek on the road giving access to the property.

Before World War I, the Davenport Rille Club rented land south of the farm home on which they built live bunks of varying heights and a cellar from which two large targets could be raised and lowered. The cellar was at the base of a high and sharp embankment near Devil' s Glen Road. During the war the government of the arsenal rented the range and sent 60 soldiers to camp in the field and to practice at the range. Groups were changed every few weeks. Three of the Freund boys, Harry, Peter, and Lorenz were drafted.

In 1920 the farm was divided and rented. Harry had 160 acres and the old buildings. A new house and barn were built for Fred. In 1920, their parents, Eleanora, Peter, Fred, Rose, and Julia moved to 815 (717) West Grant Street in Bettendorf. Eleanora lived there untill955. Harry was married in 1920. Fred, Lorenz, and Rose were married in 1921. Lorenz lived on Uncle Albert's farm on Devil' s G.len Road. Ignatz Freund also lived on Devil's Glen Road. julia (Sister Mary Jean, B.V.M.) entered Mt. Carmel, Dubuque, in 1925.

john Adam Freund died in 1922. Anna Rogge Freund died in 1934. This information is from Sister Mary jean Freund's research. Submitted by Patricia Freund Cepican, niece of Sister Mary Jean
