THE BUDDHIST MONUMENTS AT SANCHI - A REAPPRAISAL
Dear Sir,
As you know, the Buddhist Monuments at Sanchi- a World Heritage site, situated 46 km. north-
east of Bhopal, the capital of Madhya Pradesh state in India, has been a centre of attraction for the
pilgrims as well as scholars alike since its discovery in 1918 by General Taylor. Searching studies
from various points of view of around fifty monuments existing on the hill of Sanchi have beenconducted till date resulting in publication of vast literature. Archaeological excavations
conducted in and around Sanchi have thrown floodlight on various issues related to yet unsolved
problems of political, cultural, art and architectural, epigraphically as well as many other aspects
of this site antiquated between 3rd Century BCE and 12 Century CE. Recently, on September 12,2012, the Government of Madhya Pradesh announced the University of Buddhist and Indic
Studies, which is being built in collaboration with the Government of Sri Lanka and Bhutan
which will be located at Sanchi in close proximity to the great Stupa. Designed by Sri Lankan
architect S.W.Isurunath Bulankulame, the University will have various facilities, combined with a
green landscape and usage of Natural energy. The foundation stone for the University was laid on
September 17, 2012 by Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa, Bhutan’s Prime Minister Jigmi
Yozyer Thinley and Mahabodhi Society of Sri Lanka President Bangala Upatissa Nayaka Thero.
Considering that tremendous potentialities exist in studies related to the History, Art,
Architecture, Archaeology, Excavations, Conservation and Preservation, Epigraphy, Museums,
Water Management etc. of Sanchi and its neighbourhood we propose to undertake publication of
a book entitled : “ Buddhist Monuments of Sanchi- A Reappraisal” incorporating latest researches
and views on the subjects stated above. This prestigious publication proposed to be undertaken by
a renowned Publishing House of Delhi shall be entirely on Art Paper with colored as well asBlack-and - White illustrations. Since your contributions to Indic Studies are well known, we
invite you to kindly contribute a research paper on any one of the above mentioned aspects of
Sanchi. Kindly send your consent by reply post to any one of the signatories below. We will
expect your consent by 30-1-2013 and your research paper by 31.3.2013 at the latest. The
research paper be neatly typed and hard as well as the soft copies be supplied along with B-W as
well as colored plates and illustrations. On publication, a supply of a complimentary copy of the
published book is hereby assured.
I am sure, with your kind co-operation, the publication shall open up new dimensions of research
pertaining to Buddhist studies in general and Sanchi in particular.
With regards.
Yours sincerely
