I-RATIONALE

In our effort to know more about this group of insect we tried to look for information concerning Plecoptera of the Philippines. Apparently this is one of the poorest known insect group in the Philippine archipelago. Dr. Ignaz Sivec one of the leading experts of Plecoptera in the Oriental region informed us that Plecoptera in the Philippines is least known and willing to help us identify these useful insects. With roughly 25 species so far known from the archipelago none came near to our study site. Hence, we proposed to conduct an extensive survey of Plecoptera in Compstela Valley Province to provide the first serious effort in documenting this insect group in the Philippines.

This project is the first extensive survey of Plecoptera fauna in Compostela Valley

Province, Mindanao. We aimed that results of this study will be used by the policy makers as foundation for monitoring fluvial systems in Compostela Valley considering currently strong mining activities occurring mostly in the remaining important fluvial systems in the province hence a constant monitoring should be done. This survey of Plecoptera in Compostela Valley would hopefully provide a boost for monitoring analysis and future conservation efforts. As a result of our study, we produce some instructional materials to be used by the miners, students, local villagers, and other stakeholders towards preservation and protection of delicate Plecopteran species and entire of Compostela Valley Province. Believing that education is most effective in small group discussion, we conducted some small group discussion among students and peers about Plecoptera education and brainstorm some ideas on how to preserve the important fluvial systems in Compostela Valley. We also started to launch small forum on the preservation and protection of Cabalinan Creek which is one of the remaining haven of Plecopteran species in Nabunturan.

II- INTRODUCTION The Philippines (Fig. 1) is one of the 17 Mega-biodiversity countries in the world with over 52,000 described species of plants and animals. Although we are second from the smallest megadiversity country after Ecuador, Philippines ranks number one in terms of species density and endemism with more than 50% of species found nowhere else on earth. As some scientists say Philippines is “GALAPAGOS TIMES 10” as they continue to discover unique species every time they explore our mountains, seas and other fluvial systems. However, our country is also one of the ‘biodiversity hotspot’ where extinction of species particularly the endemics showed at an alarming rate. According to a report from the Foundation of Philippine Environment that Philippine forests alone have been shrinking at an average rate of 2% per annum or a deforestation rate of 550,000 hectares a year or 63 hectares per hour) – one of the highest in the world. The three most common cause of this are logging, conversion of the forest into agricultural purposes (i.e. Banana plantation, sugarcane plantation, pineapple plantation, etc.) and mining.

Compostela Valley Province (Fig. 2) (formerly part of Davao del Norte until it was made

independent in 1998) is the third newest province in the Philippines behind Dinagat Islands and

Zamboanga Sibugay. Composed of 11 municipalities with a total land area of 4,479.77 km2, its capital is Nabunturan a first class municipality. The province borders Davao del Norte to the west, Agusan del Sur to the north, and Davao Oriental to the east, and to the southwest lies the Davao Gulf.

With mean annual maximum temperature of 33oC, the climate pattern in the province follows no distinct dry or wet season but pronounced maximum rainfall is usually observed during the months of November to January. It is divided into two congressional districts: First district is composed of the municipalities of Monkayo, Montevista, Compostela, New Bataan, and Laak while Nabunturan, Mawab, Mabini, Pantukan, Maragusan, and Maco composed the second district.

A recent study conducted by Jumawan et al. (2012) that biodiversity in Compostela Valley particularly in the protected areas are beginning to diminished due to mixture of socio- political activities like mining, rampant timber harvesting, conversion of the protected areas into agricultural purposes, forest clearing (logging), and increasing solid waste pollution. Although most of the areas in the province are heavily logged and mined for mineral ores still there are areas with pristine watershed and fragments of secondary forest still trying to survive. Another unique feature of the province is its diverse fluvial systems in each municipality with some areas hold both cold and hot springs. Surprisingly, new fauna species are still discovered in the province (Villanueva, et al, 2013) particularly in the areas not yet reached by mining or logging activities. Plecoptera (Greek "pleco" meaning folded and "ptera" meaning wing) commonly known as ‘stoneflies’ are soft-bodied insects that can grow up to 50 millimeters long with wingspan that can reach approximately 100 millimeters. Adult stoneflies are always found near freshwater (preferably pristine

water) as they have aquatic larvae and as adults they are not powerful fliers. They therefore have poor dispersal capabilities and are rarely move far from

the place where they were born. Because of this habit, they are very prone to extinction. Furthermore these species are very sensitive to water pollution, require clean, well-oxygenated water to survive hence they are excellent indicators of water quality. With fear that these species would be gone to extinction in the province a provincial-wide survey of Plecoptera fauna is conducted. The current project is funded by the Rufford Small Grant Foundation (RSGF) a UK based charity with small

counterpart from the project leader. This paper reported the results of the extensive survey of Plecoptera and the small conservation efforts of the biodiversity team for the biodiversity of Compostela Valley Province.

III – OBJECTIVES

1. Document Plecoptera fauna within the province of Compostela Valley 2. Trace remaining potential potable water resource around the province for monitoring and

conservation 3. Train students and other stakeholders (Education) towards protection and conservation of

biodiversity in Compostela Valley 4. Produce instructional materials for the preservation and inclusion of Plecoptera fauna and

other insect groups in school curricula 5. Produce scientific paper as reference for policy makers in making more comprehensive

management plan for the fluvial systems in Compostela Valley 6. Establish partnership with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR),

Nabunturan Balik-Kinaiyahan Foundation, and other stakeholders for the creation of “Save Cabalinan Movement”

7. Replicate the “Save Cabalinan Movement” to other municipalities around Compostela Valley

IV-METHODOLOGY

Materials and equipments The following materials were purchased: Stereomicroscope with built-in camera, Nikon DSLR

camera, generator set, electrical wires, 2 12 meters white cloth, Global Positioning System (GPS) Garmin, specimen drier, hand nets, dredge nets, and vials. Chemicals include pure acetone and 90% ethanol.

Study area, preservation, and identification This project was conducted in Compostela Valley Province Philippines. Opportunistic

sampling using hand netting and standard light trapping method was conducted in the following

municipalities: Montevista (07° 47’ 539” N; 125° 54’ 183”E), Monkayo (07° 56’ 605” N; 125° 58’

881”E), New Bataan, Compostela (07° 41’ 021” N; 126° 08’ 890”E), and Laak (07° 50’ 824” N; 125° 53’

158”E), Maragusan (07° 20’ 064” N; 126° 11’ 092”E), Mabini (No GPS data), and Nabunturan (07° 36’

880” N; 125° 57’ 329”E) (Figures 3-61) between the months of March and September 2013. The municipalities of Pantukan, Maco, and Mawab were not visited by the team due to security reasons. All specimens were preserved using 90% ETOH and shipped to Dr. Ignac Sivec in the Slovenian Museum of Natural History, Slovenia for identification.

Out of 162 individuals collected, the fluvial systems of the Municipality of Laak particularly in Barangay San Antonio (Fig.31-45) hold a total of 106 individuals which revealed the highest number of Plecopteran species. Cabalinan in Nabunturan (Fig.3-10) with a total of 18 individuals ranks second followed by Mayaon in Montevista (Fig. 19-22) with 15 individuals, Awao in Monkayo (Fig. 50-53) with 14 individuals, Mabini (Fig. 23-30) and Maragusan (Fig. 54-61) both with 3 individuals, and no material collected in Cagan, New Bataan (Fig. 11-18).

VI- DISCUSSION

The first batch of materials were coming from the municipalities of Nabunturan, Montevista, and Mabini. The second batch of materials with a total of 109 individuals were sampled from the municipalities of Maragusan, Compostela (Fig. 43-49), Monkayo, and Laak (Fig. 31-42) and would hopefully increase the species diversity of the preliminary data. Although the team was not able to collect Plecopteran material from Cagan, New Bataan but still we suspect that the area still holds interesting species of Plecoptera materials. Other than the bad weather conditions in the field, the short trapping periods per sampling site would account to less diversity of species collected. Furthermore we observed that less plecopteran species are present in cold- high altitude areas particularly above 1000 masl like in Cagan. During a private email, Dr. Ignaz Sivec mentioned that ”Plecoptera fauna generally in tropics like Philippines is very large diversity of species and extremely low abundance”. In which case, Plecopteran studies in the Philippines needs longer trapping periods to different microhabitats to increase the chance of species diversity.

The presence of Plecopteran species to almost all municipalities is a good sign of the purity

of fuvial systems in the province. Most of the fluvial systems visited by the team are the current source of potable water of local villagers, water source for rice paddies, and other agricultural purposes. However, the alarming situation on these sites as observed by the team is that it is slowly degraded and polluted due to mixture of soci-economic activities like logging, and mining.

The present challenges for the preservation and conservation of biodiversity of Compostela

Valley particularly the fluvial systems visited by the expedition team are logging, conversion of the forested areas that support the fluvial systems into agricultural purposes, and mining. These three socio-economic activities seems unstoppable but we believed that education, strengthening and creation of policy or local ordinance and their proper implementation for the protection of these very important biodiversity areas in Compostela Valley could still make a difference. We urged both government office particularly the Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office and non-government Balik Kinaiyahan Foundation Incorporated to work hand-in-hand for the protected and preservation of the remaining fluvial systems in the province. Out of this initiative, the Save Cabalinan Movement was born and we plan to replicate this program to our fluvial systems visited by the team.

VII- SMALL STEPS TOWARDS CONSERVATION OF OUR BIODIVERSITY

• Educating the field guides and local villagers. We believed that the first person who listens and understand what we are doing are the field guides and the local villagers. They are not mostly educated. They are mostly indigenous people we tap during our field works who are more than willing enough to help (although they are paid) us in collecting Plecopteran materials. Aside from they provide security for the team, they also provide indigenous knowledge which we think are very useful in designing future conservation efforts. Example of these (indigenous knowledge) are their ethnic stories behind certain waterfalls or mountain range and how these nature's gift connects with their own cultural heritage. Most of them understand that what we are doing would help them understand more of the species of flora and fauna within their localilty particularly the younger generations. Hopefully we could design a conservation measures that would blend both indigenous and scientific knowledge for better protection and conservation of our biodiversity.

• Small group discussions with our students. Using our designed brochure entitled 'Help

Conserve Biodiversity of Compostela Valey – Plecoptera Fauna' (Fig. 62-63), a small group discussion was conducted by the research team and some volunteers to the college students of Assumption College of Nabunturan, particularly the biology major students. We plan to replicate this activity to other public and private schools in the province particularly the sampling sites (other municipalities) of the project. This is one of our target activities for the second round of the project 'Education for Conservation of Biodiversity of Compostela Valley' (if given another opportunity by the RSGF) aside from conducting more field works especially to other areas not reached by teh expedition team.

• Forum for the conservation and protection of Cabalinan Creek and the creation of the Save

Cabalinan Movement program. This activity was held on September 18, 2013 at the Audi-Visual Room of the Assumption College of Nabunturan (Fig. 71-73). This is the first forum with its objective is to conserve, protect, and rehabilitate Cabalinan Creek one of the sampling sites which is the current haven of Pericnemic melansoni a new damselfly discovered by the author and several Plecopteran (Phanoperla and Neoperla) species. This fluvial system is the source of potable water for the local villagers which is now threatened with mining and conversion of the forest areas in the vicinity of the creek into agricultural purposes. Using P. melansoni as banner specimen, collective ideas came out for the protection and preservation of Cabalinan Creek. Among of the main activities to be conducted in the area is the immediate tree-planting

activity with endemic hardwoods near the vicinity of the creek, putting-up of billboards one at the main entrance of the creek and near the Cabalinan Falls, and designing of watershed approarch for conservation, protection, and rehabilitation of the creek. The long-range plan of the team with the stakeholders attending fora is the creation of Cabalinan Creek into an eco- tourism park in Nabunturan. The attendees of the forum is in Appendix A.

• Faunistic paper of Plecoptera in Compostela Valley. Currently the team leader is drafting the

faunistic paper of Plecoptera fauna in Compostela Valley to be considered for publication (preferably in an ISI). This soon to be published paper will be used by policy makers as a reference material for the development of management plan of the fluvial systems particularly in Compostela Valley. This will also be used by the academe in advancing Plecoptera research in the Philippines and the world.

VIII- FUTURE PLANS

The project team have come-up with two options of future projects/activities out of the round. First is the Mindanao wide survey of Plecoptera where the sampling will be conducted at the main protected areas (i.e. Mt. Apo national park, Mt. Kitanglad national park, Mt. Lumot, etc.) will be explored for Plecopteran species. The target of this project is to further increase the current list of Plecoptera species in the Philippines. Included also in this future project is the expedition of areas in Compostela Valley Province not reached by the survey team. Second is the Education for Conservation Program in Compostela Valley. Highlight of this program is the mass production of instructional materials or creation of handbook of insects for example in Compostela Valley which can be used in educating the people of Compostela Valley particularly the indigenous communities, academe, and even policy makers.
