VERTICAL COMMUNITY / EVOLO COMPETITION 2010

East Village is the largest District in downtown San Diego, located east of the Gaslamp Quarter and southeast of the Core District and Cortez Hill. This neighborhood was once a blighted warehouse district, now, revitalized by the upbringing of PETCO Park in 2004. Visitors and tourists can now attend the baseball games, enjoy luxury hotels and restaurants, rooftop, bars, cafes, boutique shops, galleries and live music venues all over downtown, San Diego. At this rate of high development and increasing tourism and residency population, it is expected that by 2050, San Diego’s population will top another 1.5 million. In anticipation of San Diego’s density increase and provided capacity, vertical integral communities are one of the most discussed future development proposals in San Diego and all over the world. A vertical community’s foundation is based on a community’s cultural, social, economic and structural needs. It is a responsive, adaptable and integral design strategy for a developing community.

Transformation of skin structure

e skin structure is based on biological tensegrityseeking out its scientic and structural components of adaptation and development. Cellular Tensegritydenes new rules of biological design that govern the skeletal structure of the biological shell / skeleton. By using a similar type of skin design for architecture as cytoskeletal skin of molecular cell structures, can helpin environmental sustainability and providing for communitynecessities.

Year 2050

Biological TensegritiesScience+Structure

People, communities and urban cities are engrossed in variable layers and complexities, while accumulating intensities of development throughout time, when architecture stays static. By using a biologically responsive skin structure, it will be able to house people in 2010, as well as supporting the density population of 2050 by having the ability to grow and accommodate for the needs of the community.e skin’s characteristics are just as our own skin, having some level of elasticity, exibility and adaptivity, but extremely durable, long lasting and changes as we change through time. e skin responds to the current needsof its time in social, cultural and economic changes. It grows as the community grows,it changes as it changes, they are integral.

The social, cultural, and political aspect of architecture has potential to transform the way we perceive the world. The site is dealing with major issues like transportation, homelessness, lack of business opportunity and contextual sustainability. This project is investigating how mixed-use high-rise building can be part of the solution of these issuesfor downtown San Diego.
