Meeting Minutes (Subject to correction and approval at the next Salina Region board meeting)

The Sept. 29 meeting of the Salina Region SCCA was called to order by RE Monte Rans at 2:30 p.m. at the Rib Crib Restaurant. Attending were Theresa and Mark Walton, Tim and Crisanne Thompson, Michael Mace, Rocky Entriken, Abner Perney, Dennis and Nancy Smith and Bill and Connie Preheim. Dennis moved the minutes from the last meeting be approved. Bill seconded. Passed. Theresa presented the treasurer's report. She asked for a receipt from the application to the Kansas Secretary of State for the club's certificate of good standing. A refund of $20.00 is due to an FSAE member who didn't run at last event. She also needs the address of the treasurer changed from Ken Kennedy's, which only requires a phone call to the bank. She will ask Ken if he might do that. Motion to approve the treasurer's report, with the questions resolved, by Rocky, seconded by Michael. Passed. Old Business: The Richards award to outstanding members was discussed. Dennis asked for the proposed qualifications be emailed to the board for discussion at the next meeting. Abner will be gone for the next autocross, Dennis will bring his pickup to transfer the trailer. New Business: Monte reminded board members to be thinking of nominees for the board for the coming year. Michael may not be autocrossing next season so we need to be considering applicants for RE and Assistant RE. Completing Weekend Memberships online at the events was discussed and a Wi-Fi hot spot would be needed to do so. Check-ins could also be done that way but more research needs to be done. Walk-ins present a problem doing it that way. Dennis brought up the cone carts that we are using now and what could be done to make them more user-friendly or going to heavier duty ones altogether which would be around $70.00 each. There was discussion but no decision made until more review could be completed. Dennis also brought finding a way to hold the carts in place inside the trailer so they didn't tip over during transport. He also suggested saving an amount from each event’s income be set aside to purchase a new trailer. The club's CD's were brought up. Theresa will check on the possibility of a second CD since one was cashed in to help the city pay for improvements to ECRA. The remainder was put in the club's treasury at the time. A participant in the last event had suggested a way to give second drivers more time to get ready to run. After discussion, it was concluded that the way we handle it now could be adapted to give them more time without changing the format. A discussion of annual techs being listed in MotorsportsReg with the region identification regions in and near Kansas would have online access to the information. Theresa suggested for next season the regions get together in some manner to coordinate event dates to try to avoid conflicts. Michael brought up that two people who drove in this event did not work. We need to check off the workers as they report and remind all that it is a volunteer organization and everyone needs to do their part. Rocky brought up the idea of year-end PAX awards being expanded from only one to the top seven to ten. Something to consider for next season. He also said his Endurokhana at the last event would be different from the Wichita event’s format, but one he has done in years past. Dennis moved the meeting be adjourned, Nancy seconded. Passed. Submitted, Connie Preheim, Secretary

Octoberfast!... … October 20 … is our annual Member Appreciation Event, using a course drawn in 1990, Salina Region’s first year, by Dave and Jo Richards. Dave drew a map, not precisely to scale, and that map has been used ever since to put down the course. This means the course seems familiar to returning drivers, and yes it’s fast, but it’s never quite the same way twice. It’s always a popular event. The Member Appreciation part is that all Salina Region members get a FREE ENTRY. Yes, all. Whether Region-of-Record, Associate, Family, First Gear, whatever. Even if you pay your dues standing at the trailer that morning while signing in.

Endurokhana… … November 3 … is a unique event like none you’ve ever done before. Think the 24 Hours of Le Mans condensed down to 3 minutes. That’s how long the run is, but the course is very short, about 20 seconds. The idea is to get in as many laps as you can before the 3 minutes is up. The course design will be simple and flowing, not too tight. The idea is to focus on the drive, not on wrestling with the car. Pylons are still 2 sec, and an off-course is 10 sec. Yes, keep going because there’s really no such thing as a DNF unless you just stop before the checkered flag flies. We’ll have a special timesheet so you can have your lap times. Only two runs, but it’s still 6-plus minutes of seat time. You may feel your handling change under you as your tires hook up or you find a rhythm you didn’t have on the early laps. Open to all. Use up what’s left of this year’s tires!

. .r e Challenge 19.2 Monte Rans resurrected the course he intended to use for the Divisional last June, which became impossible because he city had piled storm-damage tree limbs on the edge of our site, for our round of the annual R.E. Challenge. It was a combination of fast and technical, switching from one mode to the other and back. A quick time meant you couldn’t just bomb through, but neither could you tiptoe. Know when to go, know when to slow. Eighteen Wichita Region members came to contest the challenge. While several are also Salina Region members, the determination is Region of Record so those individuals scored for the “invaders.” A tactic that emerged was several drivers, from both regions, running in the STO classes and thus bumping the Challenge points total available – the more drivers in the class, the more points scored by the winner (and everyone else). One result was some delightfully close competition, not just for the win but through the standings – exactly the type of outcome a showdown like this is hoped to produce. The closest contest of the day actually scored for neither side since KSU FSAE teammates drivers Colton Maxwell and Devin Wright are not current members. They took Maxwell’s basically E Street Miata to D Prepared because a misguided tree limb several months ago broke out the windshield. The two danced around each other until 5th runs when both posted their best time, Maxwell just 0.121 quicker. Next-closest was also a 2-car class, also decided on 5th runs. It was the first time this year Theresa Walton has bested Sharon Brillhart in an ESL contest. Walton was just 0.217 quicker. Her 58.944 also won the Fast Lady award. STO8 was a five-car class. Guy Roberts had a pair of 59s on the board while Dennis Smith was stuck in the 60s, but on his final run Dennis uncorked a 58.8 time to win by 0.281. FTD, Top PAX and Loudest Car all went to Adam Blunck, who finished with just an 0.482 sec edge to win STO6 over Timothy Thompson. Blunck’s Impreza toured the course in just 54.091 sec. Only five cars ran in the 54s. Kyle Martinez was second-quick, wrestling his dad’s big Mecham Trans-Am through the course in 54.3 to win CP. Ryan Plourde won STS in a Miata at 54.5, only 0.004 quicker than Thompson, and Tyler Naden’s STO4 Miata finished at 54.9. Plourde also eked out a narrow STS class win over Jacob Lynn by 0.528 sec. Largest class, once again, was ES with six drivers (and that was even after one no-show and the two who went to DP). The winner was Mason Smith by just over one sec on newcomer Adam Walters, who signed in as a member of Western Michigan Region but recently moved to Wichita.

Salina reclaims the R.E. Challenge Solo Cup!

After two rounds of the 2019 R.E. Challenge, the Cup comes back to Salina. The record now stands at 3-3 for the friendly inter-regional competition. Coincidentally, each team scored 360 points in the second round under the system devised by Wichita member Eric Brown, but Salina did it with just 16 drivers scoring points to 18 from Wichita. The tactic of multiple entries in the STO classes worked for Wichita, who ran five drivers in STO6 and scored

150 points. But Salina countered in STO8, which also had 5 entries, taking a 100-50 edge. E Street also scored big for Salina, going 130-30 for the northern team. Wichita swept STS for 60 points, and CP for another 30. Three other classes had two entries, one from each team, BS, ESL and HS, and Salina won all three, 20-10. The Yoder round saw 24 classes contested, Wichita won 17, Salina 7, with 2 to non-members. ECRA had 17 classes, and it was Salina winning 12, Wichita 4, non-members 1.

Back to Indy in 2021 The annual SCCA National Championship Runoffs® will return to the road course at Indianapolis Motor Speedway in 2021, for the 58th running of the unique championship motorsport event. Dates are Sept. 25-Oct. 3. It will be the second time in Runoffs history that the event has been staged at IMS. The first visit occurred in 2017 and was a massive success for both IMS and SCCA. “Back in 2017, we felt pretty sure the Runoffs at Indianapolis Motor Speedway would be a hit with SCCA road racing competitors, but that event exceeded even our wildest dreams,” said Mike Cobb, SCCA President/CEO. “It was the largest event in Runoffs history, with 969 entries, and produced both great racing and great memories.”

Many SCCA racers have gone on to compete at the Indy 500, with Mark Donohue and Bobby Rahal the only drivers to earn both a Runoffs title and an Indy 500 win during their careers. “For many of us involved in motorsports today, Indianapolis Motor Speedway and the Indy 500 were the spark that ignited our dreams and passion at a young age,” said SCCA Vice President/COO Eric Prill, who won his F Production race at Indy in 2017. “Just the opportunity to drive a race car around this hallowed facility in the tire tracks of our heroes is something that many of us spent our lives dreaming about. And to be able to do it at an iconic and unique event like the Runoffs – where a year’s, or in some cases a lifetime’s, effort culminates with the checkered flag while crossing the Yard of Bricks – is a magical combination.” This year the Runoffs are at VIRginia International Raceway Oct. 8-13, to be followed next year with a return to Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wisc., where it ran for five years, 2009 to 2013.

SCCA Membership notes: In order to be eligible for all the programs of SCCA you need to be a National member, which includes a “local” region of your choice. This becomes your Region of Record. Normally your RoR is the area in which you live, but it doesn’t have to be. We have members who live in other Regions’ territories, and some of those regions have members who live in our territory. You may also join as many other regions as you like, paying their local dues for the purpose of winning local championship points and participating in their programs. These are “Associate” or “Dual Region” memberships. Salina Region’s Associate Members are fully-vested members eligible for all our championships, voting rights, region offices and other member benefits. Associate membership only means region-of-record is elsewhere. You must be a member to enter SCCA events. There are several different types of membership available, including Regular, Family, First Gear (under 25) and Military, plus short-term Weekend Memberships (we charge $10, the minimum amount). More information is available at www.salinascca.org, www.scca.com, or call Salina Region membership chair Rocky Entriken at 785-827-5143 or e-mail [email protected].

Associate memberships • • • • Associate Memberships in Salina Region expire concurrent with National and Region-of-Record memberships. All Associate memberships paid direct to Salina Region are notified to SCCA Membership and expire on their National expiration date. Associate members are fully-vested members of Salina Region, although their Region-of-Record is elsewhere. • To become an Associate Member of Salina Region, contact SCCA Membership (call 1-800-770-2055) and ask to be included as a member in Salina Region, as well as any other additional regions you may desire. The Region’s local dues will be paid at that time and added to your renewal fees. • If you choose to pay dues direct to Salina Region (for example, at an event), we will notify SCCA and your Salina Region membership will become part of your National membership renewal. • Dues are $15.00 both for single memberships and for family memberships (which includes spouse). If you are a First Gear member with Region of Record in another region, Associate Member dues to Salina Region are $10. • Mailed subscriptions to The Write Line are available for non-SCCA members at $15.00 per calendar year. Or, subscribers may choose to receive issues as a PDF document by e-mail blast, just let us know.

If you received the e-mail version but would prefer to receive The Write Line by mail, just send a message to the editor ([email protected], or 2731 Scott, Salina Ks. 67401) and we’ll keep you on the snail-mail list.
