Im quite sure I would have learned to swim a lot sooner if I had lived inFlorida or California or Hawaii, anywhere that actually had long hot summers,

warm water and naked people sporting tan lines. As it turned out, I was born

and raised in western Washington, known widely as the drizzle and slug

capital of the world. Where paleness is pervasive and anyone showing a tan

line is viewed as suspect ~ most likely a fugitive from California.

Oh sure, in all fairness to the much maligned wet side of the Evergreen

State, three or four times every century we actually have a summer that

sizzles, with temperatures so warm, even hot, that local mossbacks begin to

sweat uncontrollably. Remember 09? We frantically searched closets and

drawers for seldom used items like sunglasses, sun hats and sun block, even

shorts and sandals. Then, most of us camped out at air-conditioned malls

until the freaky weather oddity passed.

To be sure, even in our normal summers the feeble sun will beat its way

through the murk for a few days in July and August but any warmth from it

quickly dissipates into the frigid soil, leaving hopeless gardeners predicting

yet another green tomato year. . . .

Yet, in spite of the ckle sunshine, the chilly wind and the ever-present

overcast, most of us who reside here in the crosshairs of the Puget Sound

convergence zone still learn how to swim, albeit grudgingly if one has to take

    swimming lessons outside.

When I was seven I fell out of a rowboat while perch shing with myfather at Cottage Lake. I splashed around frantically until Dad yanked me out

by the collar. Youve got to learn to swim, son. He said. The sooner,

    the better.

    (Continued on page 8.)

LFrom time to time, we run excerpts from Society member Bob

Martins book, The Way I Remember It.Recently, he added a

chapter to his recollections. Below is the rst half, and the full

story is online at edmndhisiclscie.g. Search for Min

    and swim.

    (Continued from page 7.)

    Shortly after

    my dunking, I was

    encouraged by my

    parents, to take

    swimming lessons.

    Forced would be a

    better word since I

    was not too keen

    about the idea.Mom rmly stated,

    There will be no

    more shing until

you learn how to swim young man. And then she sealed the deal, And

    thats nal!

There is no disputing the fact that learning to swim would have been

much easier and far more comfortable in a heated pool but in the 1940s

there were no swimming pools in my hometown and none within easy

driving distance. That left the Sammamish River or Gateway Grove and a

handful of other lakeside resorts not far from town.

Gateway Grove was located on the northwest shore of Lake Sammamish

(todays Idylwood Park). The willow thickets and water lily patches that grew

along the boggy shoreline had been cleared away years before and a fewtruckloads of sand brought in and dumped to create a small but pleasant

swimming beach. Hundreds of kids from my hometown learned to swim

    there. . . . .

Im not sure where they found our swimming instructors. My guess

is that the Parks Department went to the nearest prison and recruited

someone serving a term for sadistic cruelty to minors. Or sometimes they

found a disgruntled teacher who wanted to return the torment that he or

she had endured throughout the school year. Other summers a cruel-hearted

college or high school student with a penchant for bullying young children

could be signed up. There were only two requirements ~ a valid Red Cross

water safety certicate and the ability to yell like an Army drill sergeant.
