formed from volcanic activity, the classic way of forming rock.

• Igneous rock is either:– Intrusive – formed from magma cooled

underground– Extrusive – formed from volcanic activity

• Metamorphic Rock = Hard Rock

Hard Rock = Metamorphic Rock

• Metamorphic rock is like hard rock because it is layered / changed over time through heat and pressure

• Metamorphic rocks are categorized as:– Foliated = banded (e.g. slate)– Nonfoliated = non-banded (e.g. marble)

• Sedimentary Rock = Punk Rock

Punk Rock = Sedimentary Rock• Sedimentary rock is like punk rock because it is

formed by various materials deposited in rock.• Sedimentary rock is classified as:– Clastic – fragments (e.g. sandstone)– Chemical – has precipitates (e.g. limestone)– Bioclastic – contains skeletal fragments (e.g. fossils)
