A review of a few common sense guidelines.

(1) Rooks belong on open files. Activate your Rooks, even at the cost of a tempo.

(2) Rooks also belong behind a passed pawn. As the pawn moves forward, both the pawn and Rook increase their power.

(3) Use the Rook to keep the enemy king on as few files or ranks as possible. The fewer the files, the fewer the moves.

(4) If you have two Rooks, try to have them support one another - each one would have a greater power than being isolated. Both Rooks should be able to “see “ each other - that is, being on the same rank, file. Two Rooks connected this way are slightly stronger than a single Queen.

(5) Any material advantage has the possibility of translating into a win. Don’t sacrifice in the ending unless it is the only way to win or draw (if you are losing). Several examples are given in this book.

(6) Activate your King! The Rooks have less power than Queens.

(7) Kings belong in front or on the side of the pawns to provide coverage for promotion.

(8) If you must seek a haven for your King, keep him king protected by your pawns.

(9) Push your most advanced pawns first.

Corollary: Attack the furthest enemy pawns first. They are the greatest threat to your King!
