PharmacoEconomics & Outcomes News 391 - 30 Nov 2002 Heart failure investigation appears to be appropriate, but improved organisation of care is required to address inconsistencies between physicians’ knowledge and the delivery of treatment, says a multinational team of investigators. They undertook a survey in 15 countries during the period September 1999–May 2000 to assess primary-care physicians’ knowledge of heart failure management and the implementation of such knowledge. The majority of physicians were aware of the clinical benefits of ACE inhibitors and β-blockers in patients with heart failure. However, ACE inhibitors were prescribed to 60% of patients, and β-blockers to only 34% of patients; only one-fifth of all patients were prescribed combination ACE inhibitor/β-blocker therapy.
