The seven branches of the Menorah that stood in the Temple were created from a single piece of gold; symbolizing the belief that ultimately all wisdom comes from He who is the source of all wisdom. The extreme Hellenism decreed by Antiochus was intended to abolish this uniquely Jewish perspective. The defeat of the Greeks is thus the victory of the Menorah, the notion that our wisdom, the Torah, allows us to incorporate other modes of thought, but that they must ultimately be directed toward He who is the source of wisdom. PARSHAT MIKEITZThe Talmud and many other Jewish sources note that the

Menorah and its light symbolize wisdom. The seven branches of the Menorah that stood in the

Temple were created from a single piece of gold; symbolizing the

belief that ultimately all wisdom comes from He who is the source

of all wisdom. The extreme Hellenism decreed by Antiochus

was intended to abolish this uniquely Jewish perspective. The defeat of the Greeks is thus the

victory of the Menorah, the notion that our wisdom, the Torah, allows us to incorporate other modes of
