Connecting fiddlers - young and young at heart

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

We had a big month in June with two new

shows. On June 4th we were at Arlington playing

for the Fishing Derby. Bill Meyers helped Bobby

Stevens run the show and it went very well. Read

about it in both Umatilla and Morrow County news.

They had a great BBQ and treated us very well.

Our next show was our new show, June

11th at the Hurricane Creek Grange in Joseph with

Sandi and Larry Richerson. This is a very pretty

setting with the pines around the grange. The usual

Joseph car show and quilt show were going on and

had lots of people in town. Larry and Sandi did a

great job with their first show. We ended up having

standing room only. Randy Garnett cooked the meal

and brought it out to the grange for Pat Samples and

Sandy Mallery to serve. Thanks to all the ladies

who helped. Read more in the Wallowa County

news from the Richersons.

The morning of June 18th Vickie Hagey and a

lot of good entertainers played at the Elgin Fire

Department's annual breakfast for 3 hours. Read the

Union County news for details.

I was in Union at a longtime friend’s funeral.

This fine lady was 93 years old and helped to raise

me and many other kids in my neighborhood. I will

miss her.

By 3:30 p.m. we were at our 2nd new show in

the Eagles Lodge in Walla Walla, Washington.

Mike and Pat Lydon of Touchet, Washington,

helped get the show there. It was our first show ever

out of the state of Oregon. Joan Gray, our Rosin

Dust editor, pinch hit for Bill Meyers who was on a

wagon train. Joan did a great job. Read about it in

the Rosin Dust. The Vickroy’s were there and one

of our little ones we helped raise to a great fiddler.

That would be their daughter, Kristy. Tom and

Kristy played while Carolyn waved her flags. Very

nicely done.

A good friend of ours and member of

BMOTFA, Bob Asper, from Dunwoody, GA went

to Walla Walla with us. He played guitar and

harmonica. He also played with the Blue

Mountaineers on Tuesday, June 21st at our three

locations.

I again want to thank all those who helped

with the PA system at each show. It is very much

appreciated. As I get older I find I don't have the

strength that a young buck does any more. I thank

Homemade Jam (Sandi & Larry Richerson,

Lorraine & Mike Ragsdale), for all their help that

they give when they attend the shows.

Don't forget: Emigrant Springs is not far

away. We have not heard

from many who plan to

come. Please call us 541-

562-5055 ASAP. We

need you to call for

several reasons. I need to

know if you will be taking

a parking spot for RV,

tent, etc. If you want to eat

at the potlucks both

Saturday noon and Sunday breakfast, we need to

plan for that. It would be good if I knew which

shows you will be at: Thursday, Friday, Saturday.

Here it is almost July and it’s time to let you

know how the Sumpter show went. We had 19 guys

and girls playing music and hardly any people came

to enjoy the music. The whole flea market consisted

of a younger crowd and they were not interested in

old time music. The pot luck dinner did not turn out

as good as I had hoped. I think we should not have a

pot luck dinner anymore. We could just jam on

Friday afternoon starting Labor Day week end. I

want to thank Doreen

Bingham and Barbara

West for their help in

taking tickets for the show.

I don't know what I would

have done without the

help....thank you....I missed

Denny Langford as the MC

as I had to do it and as most

of you know I have a problem choosing my words

without a little swear word or two. Here is the list of

people who came out of their way to help put on a

great show. I also want to thank Les Haynes for

bringing his keyboard and Ron Phillips for the dog

house bass.....

These people played: Ruel Teague, Les and Evelene

Haynes, Larry Cannon, Vince and Dorene

Bingham, Mark Ludwick, Peg Price (she was just

passing through), Bill West, Jody Domschot, Alyn

Domschot, Carl Stinnett, Julia Milleson, Joe

McCutcheon, Joan Gray, Ron Phillips, Alvin Shaw,

Earl Adams, Bill Henke, Tom Vickroy, he always

plays at the end of the show, but this time he played

4th, he got home so early that his wife did not think

that he was at the show..

Greetings from Grant County

It’s been another busy month. Our Fox Church

Jam was a great success with more than 15

different musicians and about 30 folks listening.

Thank you everyone who came. All of it was great;

the music, the food and all the great people. You all

are who made it turn out so GREAT, thanks

everyone. Let’s do it again next year, maybe on a

cooler day. A special thanks to everyone who

traveled so far to help with the show. The church is

in the process of being painted already. It sure is

going to look nice.

We had a great time at the Oregon's High

Desert Fiddlers Jubilee in Burns, there sure is a lot

of talent running around

our State.

Our local jams are

always fun with a good

attendance of listeners

and players. If you are in

our area on Thursday or

Sunday we would love to

have you stop in. The

jams happen on Thursday

at the Valley View Assisted Living Center from

5:30 to 7:30pm in the evening and Sunday at the

Out Post Restaurant from 2:00 to 5:00pm, or

whenever, come and bring your instrument and join

in the fun.

MORROW COUNTY

Tis that time again!

It doesn’t seem like there is much going on,

but it is easy to stay busy.

We took in the Arlington

Fishing Derby and had a

good time. We played a

couple of hours, they fed us

and Judy and I celebrated

our 55th anniversary there.

It’s been a long ride.

Page 3: Rosin Dust - Oregon Old Time Fiddlers Association · PDF fileRosin Dust July 2016 Blue Mountain Old-Time Fiddlers Association ... Skovlin, John Raines, Rebecca Lenahan, Angie Nash,

I spent a couple of days on doctor’s

appointments, and then last week I helped the

neighbors move cows into the forest service

allotments. I guess I helped. I moved pick-ups and

trailers for them. Seems like that is about all I got

done these days. They also brought me some cows

to keep me company. These heifers are kind of like

grandkids. You keep them till you are tired of

them, and then send them home.

Yesterday, we made our trip to the orchards

and bought some cherries. At our time we would

have picked them. No way, too much work! We

spent today and will spend part of tomorrow

canning them. Tis getting to be work! Nothing

new, so will say enough.

Play another tune

UMATILLA COUNTY

The June 2016 Show at Arlington fishing

Derby started at 11:30 and finished at 1:30 PM.

Bobby Stevens opened the

event with the Star

Spangled Banner and

followed with his tune.

The came Mark Ludwick,

Emily Krager, Bill West,

Sonny Morris, Julia

Milleson, Joe

McCutcheon, Denny

Langford, Bill Meyer and

the people playing back up were Jackie Tollman

and Frank Moore. We would like to thank the city

of Arlington for feeding us and being a great host.

I was unable to take in the Walla Walla Show

due to another commitment, like a wagon train trip

in the Blue Mountains of Eastern Oregon. There

was only one team of mules that ran off and rolled a

wagon over. We were very lucky only one person

received a concussion.

Thank you, Joan, for filling in for me at

Walla Walla.

The people who played at that show were:

Homemade Jam (Sandi & Larry Richerson,

Lorraine & Mike Ragsdale), Joan Gray, Mark

Ludwick, Jos Shay, Joe McCutcheon, Sonny

Morris, Jody Domschot, Alyn Domschot, Charlie

Raeder, Denny Langford, Bob Asper, Tom Vickroy,

Kristy Vickroy, Vic Fusselman, and Mike Gale.

Back-up players were Fred Edigar and Nadeen

Morris. Joan Gray played the Star Spangled Banner

to open the show and Mark Ludwick closed with a

hymn.

UNION COUNTY

Hi everyone,

Ok first I'm starting out with the May 21, 2016

show at the La Grande Senior Center. I know, I

know, I messed up and forgot to get it in last month

so now you have to read a longer report from Union

County. Not like we have much else to do, right?

La Grande Senior Center Show went off

without a hitch. They had a great dinner going on

with spaghetti plus the works. We had a great turn

out.

The show started at 6:00pm by our most

awesome President, Denny Langford. He then

proceeded to name TJ and Tiffany as Deputies. TJ

gets a great hand for helping Denny, giving out all

the things he collects in

between shows. Where

does it all come from?

Guess we need to ask

Denny. We had 32

players so the rule of

thumb is only two

songs. We opened with

the Star Spangled

Banner sung by Melody Huitt, accompanied by Joe

McCutcheon. The following were 🎻 Vickie Hagey,

Les and Evelene Haynes, Anna Cavinato, Ruth

Hodge, Paula Davenport, Joan Gray, Brea Rudd,

Mark Ludwick, Diana Davrainville, Jack Fox,

Dallas Olmstead Miller, Margo Mack, Vic

Fusselman, Larry Cannon, Denny Langford, Ron

Phillips, Tom Vickroy, Carl Stinnett, Melody Huitt,

Julia Milleson, Joe McCutcheon, Terry and Lee

Stoltz, Bethel Croghan, Margie and Dave Vaughn,

Tammy Croghan, Veronica Manis, Jody and Alyn

Domschot. The closing hymn was presented by

Mark Ludwick. We had a great turn out and I feel

everyone had a great time. The show ended at

9:40pm.

On June18, 2016, we headed to the Elgin

Firemen's Breakfast. I really believe they could

have picked a sunnier day. Things turned out well

and they had a record feed. As players, things got

off to a slow start. Vickie just was not with it. Too

many miles on the road and not enough sleep. Any

who, we had about 12 players show up to cast a

little back ground noise for the breakfast. Those

who played were, Melody Huitt, Sherry Cadwell,

Bob Wiles, Sandy and Larry Richerson, Lorrain and

Mike Ragsdale, Vickie Hagey, Jody and Alyn

Domschot, Joan Gray, Mark Ludwick. Backup

there was Jan Post and Frank Moore. Thanks to all

who showed and were persistent to play.

See ya at the camp out
