What is the BibleTHIS WHAT IS THE BIBLE?TheBibleisnotreallyonebook,butacollectionofbooksdivinelyinspiredandwrittenbyover fortyauthors.ThesehumanauthorswereguidedbytheHolySpiritonthreedifferentcontinents,inthreedifferent languages. It tookover16centuriestorecordwhatGodwanted to sharewithHis people.However, theentireBibledoeshaveonecentraltheme—thatofGod’s loveforhumanityandHisplanthroughouthistorytoredeemandsaveit.

TheBiblewaswrittentospecificpeople inspecificsettingsaboutspecific situations. WHY IS THE BIBLE SPLIT INTO TWO PARTS?OLD TESTAMENTTheOldTestament(OT)contains39booksthatrecordeventsand“testify”orpointtoJesus’coming. It iscalledtheOldTestamentbecause it involvesaperiodoftimeundertheOldCovenantthatGod had with His people. The old covenant (or agreement) wasbasically“IfyoufollowmycommandsIwillcontinuetoblessyou.”AsacrificewasmadeandbloodwasshedonaregularbasistomakeupforfallingshortofkeepingallofGod’scommandments.

TheOldTestamentbeginswiththeoriginoftheworld,butquicklyfocuses onGod’s dealingswith one particular family (Abraham’s)whobecomesthenationofIsrael.MuchoftheremainderoftheOTisthecontinuingsagaoftheIsraelitescyclingbetweendisobedienceandreturntoGodoverandoveragainandGod’scontinuedpursuitandloveforHischildrenthroughallofit.

The end of the Old Testament contains warnings from God’smessengers (prophets) to the Israelites to stop ignoringGod andreturntoHim.TheyalsoforetellofthecomingMessiah,TheChrist!

NEW TESTAMENTTheNewTestament(NT)isallabouttheNewCovenant-throughJesus’deathandresurrectionhumanity’ssinsareforgivenandweare given a new life. No longer are animal sacrifices necessary.Although the lawof theOld Testament is still beneficial to live ahealthy, full, committed life, the grace offered to us in the NewTestamentgivesustheredemptionthatwecouldneverobtainonourown. Instead,throughChrist,Godhasonceandforall takencareofoursinfulnesssothatwecanbeinperfectrelationshipwithHim.Allweneedtodoisaccepttheinvitation.

TheNew Testament contains 27 books that record the events ofJesus’ life and ministry and how Christianity has spread. It haspracticalwaysforthewholeworldtoexperiencecloserelationshipwithGodandrighteousliving.ItstartswithfourbookscalledtheGospels (Matthew,Mark, Luke and John). The Old Testament existed as a collection of books when Jesus was alive
